Finding ways to win despite shortcomings=COACHING

Going to be tough sledding on the road in the B1G and against SHU, but it takes this type of style to stay in games against more talented teams. Very excited for the fact that we've had a couple of stretches in games where we look very good and have avoided that deep valley of bad basketball for an extended period of time in any game.

Even though Miami is extremely athletic up-front and blocked a lot of shots, it didn't take away from the effort of the team. Fordham will be another test and we tweaked the starting lineup to give Sanders and Johnson a chance to start both halves....that likely made the difference in the game vs some of the slower starts earlier in the season.

Would like to see some sort of pressure or press with a lineup of Johnson, Sanders, and Williams.

Free throw shooting was atrocious.

Best passing game by far. Hardly any turnovers although the one inbound turnover underneath their basket was worst of the year. Should never happen

Thought Doorson was a nice little spark. Williams off the bench has been a godsend.

Great coaching with use of time outs to stop runs.

Thought FDU was pretty good and better than record. Lotta line drive threes.

Nice win which we lose last three years. Excellent coaching.

I think your next to last sentence is the key. How many of these WTF losses have we had over the last 20 years?

Doorson with good minutes.

Sanders played well and under control. Carino reported that he was hospitalized last night with strep. Nice to see him tough it out.

We never panic when things don't go our way (ie way too many missed free throws), and find way our way back. Love love love our staff.

Agreed. And, for about 5 minutes in the second half, RU played its best defense of the year. They need to keep getting better and they will compete with the bottom 1/2 of the Big10.

I believe FDU was the quickest team we have faced. they were VERY quick and they could SCORE!
Yet we found a way to win. Thats what good teams,,,coached by a good COACH does !

We have seen flashes of a full court press and this team is GOOD at it!!! (Hartford for instance)But it take serious conditioning. The announcers of tonights game said our guys are wearing sensors to monitor how close to red lining they are..they also wear them in practice. So the coach knows how hard he can push them. When we are in top condition...full court pressing is something coach P will do....he just doesnt want to burn out our players.(full court press needs a healthy Sanders and he had the flu tonight)

I see progress.
-DOORSON>>>50 lbs lighter/now has some major moves and scored some impressive points,,,but more importantly he played GOOD D!!!!
-Sa is working on his 3's(he hit 2 tonight).
-Thiam had 2 sweet 3's tonight!
-Corey drove the basket more...what moves !!! drew a lot of fouls
-Williams had 2 sweet 3's on his way to 15pts and seemed more active on D
-Omoruyi had one of the nicest cleanup dunks so far this year!
-Freeman had 13 REBs,
-Gettys had some SWEET assists!!!!and some even sweeter passes!
EVERYONE is CONTRIBUTING!....

And though FDU was QUICK! Our guys kept their feet in front of them and I saw some GOOD "D" !!!
we shot 51%
we had only 8 turnovers
we had 43 REBs

we are headed in the right direction....

We didn't lose to FDU last year, so I would cut it with the, "This is a game we would have lost last year."

Be happy with how we are shaping up right now. Let's move on to Fordham.

Last year FDU shot 15% from 3 and 35% from FT. They had a bad shooting night.

It's up to you to choose what lens to view this game and this team with.

Lens A...coming off a epicly bad year hoping for respectibility
Lens B...a team that you hope wins 1/3 or more B1G THIS year and better next year.

Through Lens B there is a lot to worry about. A game like this questions the thought process that we can be competitive in most games. This was FDU, a bad basketball team.

1. our interior defense was attrocious
2. our starting 2 guard was 0-5 from the line. if we are going to win B1G games I'd think they will be tight. Can Johnson, our best defender, be trusted down the stretch with the lead going to the line
3. Our best player sits the last 5 minutes because of defense. Maybe the fact he was sick was more of the issue
4. Freeman's inability to finish inside is a concern.
5. If we don't shoot 5-7 from 3 in 2nd half the game most likely is a nail biter

Lens A
1. Likes the W
2. Likes the fact that the 2 freshman have such high BB IQs
3. Likes that we were 5-7 from 3 in 2nd half
4. Likes the assist to TO ratio

To the WTF loss crowd...1/2 of or OOC schedule is against teams ranked considerably lower than most of those WTFer teams. Our OOC schedule has been against the cupcakes of the cupcakes.

Nigel definitely had a bad game on the foul line which is concerning but the Stony Brook game he iced the game going 6 of 6 from the line in the last few minutes. I think he will usually do much better than how he shot free throws tonight. As a team we must shoot about 70% in all of our games. I am just glad we are 10-1 as many fans predicted we would only win 6 or 7 games in the OOC. I predicted 10-3 but of course was hoping for even better. Some posters said those of us predicting 10 or more wins were looking through scarlet glasses. I hope we can get a W on Sunday. We just need to continue with one at a time as our theme.

Freeman sitting with 3 personals so early could have been problematic as our ability to go 10 deep has been a big advantage against most of the teams we've played including FDU tonight. It's absolutely critical in conference games. We will have to improve our FT shooting in conference games to have a chance. Sub 50% again tonight.

You have no clue if you think that was a bad FDU team. Their guy Anderson is as good a player and shooter as we will play this year. Ohio State could not handle him nor could we . They are well coached. They run good sets. Unfortunately they have no depth and no bench and not enough height or length. But their starting 5 competes and plays hard. I will listen to Coach Pikiell and the other people that picked the team to win their conference. Plus I will trust my eyes. That was not a bad team.

I had my Scarlet colored glasses on when I predicted we would be 11 - 2 or better entering conference play. Still wearing and things still look good.

Let's give Laurent some credit here. Although he didn't contribute offensively, last night he was working hard on defense.

FDU plays in an awful conference. They aren't big. They aren't deep. Their defense was bad.

280 kenpom last year. 288 this year.

What does that have to do with their starting 5? Their 3 guards? Their 3 shooters including the
kid Potts ,who they just got back tonight? Or the offensive sets they ran or the well coached team they are? Their defense was not terrible, as they got a number of blocks early, and Corey made some incredible acrobatic shots that were well defended. Please go watch the tape of the game again.
.

Love the win.

But it was FDU. FDU.

Yes, it was FDU... and we won by 13 despite shooting 14-29 from the line. If we shot the 71% from the line that we had been shooting going into last night's game, we'd have won by 19 - which is what we should do against a team like FDU.

So, bad shooting night from the line, our starting PG battling strep, and we come out with a 13 point win? I'll take it. Team battled, and keeping composure in hard fought games with tough fouls is good experience for later.

This game is more than offense. When they played man defense we got any shot we wanted.

Not sure why they played so many possessions man to man

And FDU's 2nd best player had missed most of the season due to injury, only back the last 3 games (including RU) - and really has only played 2 full games this year, including against RU. Earl Potts was voted the most improved player in the NEC last seaosn, was the most valuable player in the NEC tourney last year, and averaged 14.7 ppg and 6 rpg last year.

Miami was the quickest team RU has faced to date - and by far. FDU is a better team than their record shows - and will be better in conference (their 2nd best player, Potts, has missed most of the season due to injury, only back the last 2-3 games, including against RU). But let us not exaggerate to make a point.

Miami will be the quickest and most athletic team that RU faces all season. Pikiell is like a surgeon. He dissects the weaknesses of the opponent and then figures out how to use our strengths and execute these strengths within a gameplan. We do not have complete players (and that is not a knock on our players). He figures out how to maximize the strengths of each of our players and fit that within a well-thought out gameplan.

There was one set that speaks volumes about this staff. After several passes the ball wound up with Gettys in the post. He had two excellent options for passes and shots and chose the higher percentage play resulting in an uncontested lay-up for Johnson. This is one small example of why this team and these coaches have been a pleasure to root for this year.

I liked seeing coach Knight jump off the bench and scream at Freeman to get back when he paused and posed after a dunk. The entire staff is in the game 100% of the time, coaching up the players.

Over analyzing robs you of happiness. I know what you are saying, and I am sometimes the same way. I am trying to change, as heck, what can I change about how the team plays?I am off the court, just an observer.

Like other folks mentioned, this was not a bad,bad team. See their schedule.

Also, lens A points to a good future. Turnovers are game losers. Lens b is not a consistent showing of the kids that are on the floor for the most part.

Choppin , since our last discussion, Ru has hit 6 threes in back to back games, (6-18 and ( 6-16) . If they can keep it up in conference games we have a chance .
