Fleck Reportedly Shut Out at Oregon-Willie Taggart to Get Job?

I think no one should be overlooking the Bosie HC when talking about who will be the Ducks new HC.

Makes sense. I was stunned when I saw he was the favorite to wind up at Oregon. They seem to be aiming higher than that these days.

Think PJ to Cinci would be a score for a Midwest guy and his family

Also, Taggart is being pushed to Oregon by Tony Dungy and Harbaugh. Didn't think he'd leave with a roster full of juniors but it's quite possible he does rather than waiting another year

That would be a big disappointment for a guy people listed for every job

Willie Taggart was in their top two, while that is a long Bus Ride, I am sure he can make it.

Some people on this site like Fleck a lot more than the power 5 schools do, btw. If you haven't notice.
Agreed. That's why I think he should take Houston if offered. Prove it there like herman did and you can move to an elite P5 job.

That would be the best move for him and that team is loaded. Not sure if Houston wants him as they are aiming pretty high. They have rich boosters.

Really? Not sure how many jobs are even available. LSU and Indiana hired within so not sure what PJ's options were.

For a Midwest guy I'd take the cool 3 mil and stay close to his recruiting base

It's also a decent step up from where he's at

Pretty unimpressed with Oregon's coaching search, at least what's been public. Even if that whole "Phil Knight $10 million" rumor was false, you figure with all the Nike money, hype, facilities, recent success, they could attract someone better than the "G5 success story of the year." Schiano is the most impressive name I've seen, experience-wise. Is that what you jumped the gun on firing Helfrich for? Figure they'd have had someone better lined up.

Throw bags of money at Petersen?

Les Miles?

Use that $10 mil as a starting point for negotiations with Kelly, Pete Carrol or some other NFL coach?

Oregon's candidate list looks more like a Rutgers candidates list.

next year there will be ALOT more HC power 5 jobs open..PJ should just wait..no reason to go from one Group of five job to another..unless its Houston.
plus you never know..maybe one day he wouldnt mind returning to a familiar place ..;)

Rumors I read (take them for what they're worth)

Oklahoma OC is going to get Houston job over Miles
Fleck not interested in Cincy. only (understandably) wants P5 or nothing
Kiffin to USF if Taggart gets Oregon
Rhule was offered Oregon but declined (!)

I don't think Temple or Cincy are upgrades for PJ. They are similar to the school he's at. Why leave to go to the AAC. He should only leave for a P5.

It's a better springboard. Cincy had Brian Kelly (ND), Dantonia (MSU) and Butch Jones (Tenn), who all (I think) HC'd at lower levels.
Al Golden used Temple to go to Miami, and not Rhule to Baylor.

Rhule declined Oregon for Baylor. Wow. That's something if true. I see him as pretty risky, and those are both schools that I thought would go for a proven commodity.

if only a stepping stone, you only go where you can win immediately. Not sure if Temple or Cinci offer that. Or WMU.

Sounds like the start of "rhule disappears into obscurity." but we'll see.

Those Cinci guys were all in the BE/BCS days, before Cinci got demoted to G5 status. Don't think they can be used to prove that point.

Might still be a better spot than WMU, but seems pretty risky after a few years in the AAC/G5 and coming off a 4-8 season. Is he losing that much talent at WMU where he's liable to slip that far? If not, I'd stay put rather than going into a shaky situation at Cinci. Temple might be better, but maybe not with the QB moving on.

I read in the Sporting News article that Cincy is pretty well stocked and has 2 great young QBs, so that would be a good landing spot. At Temple, the HC has Anthony Russo, who is going to light it up. Heck, if Flood gets the Temple job, he can bring Mike Dare, Chris Laviano and Hayden Rettig too!

They're definitely upgrades, but not the kind you leave for. If he was at Delaware and was being courted by WMU, Temple, or Cinci, WMU is definitely the third choice. But to uproot yourself when you clearly have your eyes set on a Power 5 job? Unlikely. I don't think either school would want him for that same reason.

Jmho

Fleck not getting a P5 job would be a major fail for him.

He simply can't take a Go5 job (lateral move).

Ending back at WMU would be embarrassing.

I can only see the first as being true.

LOL! So Hayden can signal plays to Chris? I hope Hayden gets to show his stuff next year where ever he ends up.

This may need updates:

Team Out In
Baylor Art Briles Matt Rhule
Cincinnati Tommy Tuberville -????
FAU Charlie Partridge -?????
FIU Ron Turner Butch Davis
Fresno State Tim DeRuyter Jeff Tedford
Georgia State Trent Miles -?????
Houston Tom Herman -????
Indiana Kevin Wilson Tom Allen
LSU Les Miles Ed Orgeron
Nevada Brian Polian -????
Oregon Mark Helfrich -?????
Purdue Darrell Hazell Jeff Brohm
San Jose State Ron Caragher -?????
Temple Matt Rhule - ??????
Texas Charlie Strong Tom Herman
Western Kentucky Jeff Brohm -??????

Don't see Flood landing any of these. Maybe he'll land an OL job at Temple? Would not be surprised if Laviano or Rettig or Dare wind up at Temple.
Could see Rettig going to San Jose State

Agree, but it helps to use the other guy for leverage.
he doesnt even need leverage. western michigan is different than other mac schools they have billionaire donors. the detroit news already reported that donors were willing to raise is pay to 2 to 2.5 a year. new rumor this week is week is they are willing to go to 3. western michigan has never seen fan support like this before. they brought 50,000 fans to the mac championship game.

I remember in his first year when they were losing (they went 1-11) and he was pushing the row the boat and the third down clock arm thing, the comments on Michigan Live were merciless and they wanted to run him out of town. Winning cures all ills and heals all wounds. . . . .

We heard the same thing about keeping Hermann at Houston. And those donors were real.

Who is hearing PJ to Temple?? That's not an upgrade for him. At best a lateral move. And that's a stretch!

It tells you how he is viewed by the people that matter.

He's young. They love him at WMU. Another year at WMU would not be so bad.

Agreed. The idea that it would be embarrassing is just silly. It's not like he can't keep winning at Western until a shot opens up. His recruiting is off the charts for a MAC school. There is no reason for him to either worry about not getting an offer or take an offer that isn't the right fit just because it's a "step up."

This thread is a perfect example on how fans view things vs the professionals. AD always look for which HC would be best for their school and culture, they are always looking for the best fit and fans just look at brand names and they really don't care about that stuff. Oooh I heard of him before, pick him!

Just because a HC used to coach at Rutgers and some fans here wanted him here when Flood was fired, they hype him up as the 2nd coming, starting a new thread about him every week, doesn't mean that AD look at him the same way. In the real world, no one is impressed with going undefeated in the freaking MAC and corny catchphrases. Truth is if they win their big bowl game against a real team that will be more impressive than anything they did during the season. He will have to prove that he is not a product of a soft schedule. ADs have seen too many HC who run wild on the sisters of the poor but were crushed in the big leagues. Say what you will about USF but it is a lot harder to win 10 games in the AAC than it is in the MAC.
