For instance, what are the differences in the linemen's responsibilities? How does the TE's job differ from one to the other, and in a passing spread is the QB more likely to throw the ball away rather than escape and try to make yards with his legs? TIA.

That is a good intro

Yes, simply provides a very rudimentary introduction into a few different types of spread offenses. keeps it simple with a general idea without getting into the X's and O's for the simple minded folks such as myself

The spread itself is just a formation (ie: how you want to line your guys up). Even a power running, pro-style offense like the Schiano days implemented spread formations.

The 'Power Spread' is a philosophy wherein you're going to:
  • Utilize spread formations fairly exclusively, regardless of down and/or distance (incl. goal line)
  • Out of that formation, you prefer to establish the run (primarily between the tackles) and force teams to dedicate additional personnel to 'the box' to stop it
  • You prefer to establish the run to set up the play-action pass
  • When teams devote additional defenders to stopping the run, you leverage single-high and man-to-man pressure schemes by passing first to the perimeter (bubble screens) and then downfield (4 Verticals, Y-Cross)
A big problem with our offense this year is that we lost a lot of our battles up front and could not establish the run. This was further complicated by the fact that we lacked dynamic playmakers who could shake man coverage consistently. The nail in the coffin is that our designed QB runs didn't scare anyone so we lacked adequate diversity in our run game (only so much you can do when you're in a spread formation with regards to the run game unless your QB can be counted as a running threat).
