Our radio broadcast - brutal

Okay, big question about the radio broadcast: can you hear: "AND IT'S THI-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D D-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-W-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N-N!!!"
The horn and music was almost as annoying to listen to on the radio as hear inside the stadium.

Worst was when Tyreem forced the fumble deep inside Minnesota territory in 4th quarter. Crowd erupted - very loud on radio at least - and was crowd noise was promptly drowned out by the stadium's resident DJ.

WFAN-FM is on about a 20 second delay from the field action.
Yesterday,I watched with my radio off, putting it on only after a big play.
WCBS-AM has that same issue.
I surprised Howie Rose with that last year, riding with him in an elevator at Citi Field following a game.
The FM broadcast is synced up 93.5 Fox Radio, don't know the call letters.

It did seem a little "off" compared to other games the crew has handled, however, the volume from the scoreboard was so loud yesterday, I could barely hear the radio with an earplug shoved in my ear. I get that some people are not a fan of Carlin. He's a homer announcer. Having listened to the broadcasts of the VT and Nebraska announcers, Rutgers is about on par with theirs, but I will say the Nebraska announcing crew was superb.

I liked Ray Lucas on the broadcast, but Teel does provide some very good insight and analysis. Yesterday was not his best day.
I loved Lucas . I am ok with the homers. . That’s what it’s supposed to be.

Continue to hammer the DJ in the game survey, pointing out that the USC game is the model of college football. Marching band playing the fight song after each down, mic'd up and loud.

Also, when the cheer/dance team went out to the R - U - T - G - E - R - S routine with the marching band playing along ,you could barely hear the marching band. Don't think they are mic'd up at all.

I can’t comment on the radio game broadcasts because I never hear them being at the game, but with a fairly long drive from Manchester, I put myself through the punishment of listening to the pregame show. It is beyond horrible. First off, what grown man goes by the name of Fooch? The accent is bad enough, but he is just terrible anyway. If JPO was paired with another player or two and just talked about football, that would be a step in the right direction. NO ONE cares about what is going on at tailgates ! I don’t want to hear that the Jenkins switched brands of bbq sauce this week. Stop with the corny tailgate interviews and trivia where you can hear other people yelling out answers to the guy being asked the question. Ask the question over the air and the first person that comes to the booth gets a prize.Dom Savino at least sounds like he put some time and effort in.The location is terrible for the broadcast—get away from any bands, karaoke, etc. Every so often, the sound goes out or the commercial breaks are way off. It sounds like high school kids on their first football season preview show. It screams amateur night !

Fooch is a broadcasting atrocity completely unfit for the job. Less eloquent than someone with no tongue or larynx and a mouthful of broken glass shards would be.

So bad he truly reflects poorly on the university and U.S. higher-ed in general. Any mime would do a better job.

I usually don’t listen because I am either watching the game one way or the other . But yesterday had to do some driving and listened on the radio - it was brutal . I only listened part of the second and third quarters . So maybe other parts of the game were better.

Here were some lowlights ;
Big pass down the field . Carlin starts screaming big play to KJ duff. Duff!!
Then legrand starts gushing about duff again . He’s coming along and made a great play. Then some silence …Carlin : oh we just got word from Fooch it was not duff on the catch, it was Ian Strong ! Fooch can see it better since he’s on the field. Yikes !

Minnesota has the ball at the rutgers 17….Carlin : there is a pass in the flat to Minnesota RB and he walks in for the touchdown . Wait this is a radio. I am not watching it . Carlin tell listener what happened between the 17 and endzone

End of first half . Rutgers has the ball . No or little mention of how many timeouts Minnesota has left , as this affects rutgers strategy.

Third quarter . Minnesota completed an 8 or 9 yard pass - wasn’t sure exactly. Rutgers is flagged for defensive holding. The penalty is 10 yards. Teel says Minnesota should decline the pentalty to get their quarterback credit for the passing yards. Because he’s a former QB and that’s what he would want. Of course , Minnesota wants the yards and accepts the penalty . Yikes !

Not much analyzing legrand and teel. There was a possession where Rutgers threw the ball every play. Legrand said “I can’t remember a run on this drive “. Tell the listener why they are throwing it every play does the defense have 8 guys in the box ? Is it because Kyle isn’t playing ?
I didn’t understand this - tell the listener why !

Listen I don’t expect some great broadcast . I get it that it’s not Bob Poppa and Carl banks . But it shouldn’t sound like I am tuning into the Piscataway high school station to listen to the JV soccer game.

Hopefully this crew will understand the listener isn’t watching the game . We need to know the score, timeouts , where the ball is and give us the right guy who made the play.
I have to disagree. It's entertainment and they're entertaining. If you're listening to the radio, chances are you're driving. Who cares if they say Dremel and it turns out to be Duff or Miller and if you're concentrating on every yard between the 17 and goal, don't run through the Stop sign coming up.
I enjoy Carlin's excitement. He's a fan but he's fair and , I think, unbiased in his commentary; credits the opposition when due. I listen to a lot of college games on XM and to me, the only booth that's more entertaining is Indiana.

Posters who want to rag on attendance over the top.

For a team in the midst of a losing streak and no wins since September was a nice crowd and better than many years.

Some fans always want to jump on attendance. Been to many schools and many road trips. RU is not easy logistically. Deal with it. And Noon starts never helps.
if parking were easier, that would alleviate issues for many.

Yes local enough !!
What’s Momma Plum’s excuse then ? For someone who doubts Ol Shelby attends, nevermind that he truly does, Momma Plum has no place criticizing the man. Did you skip the game to protest military appreciation day ?

TV announcers /broadcast wasn't very good either. Let's face it, just about everything about this program is 2nd rate.

Carlin is absolutely horrible. I’m sorry. It’s a hard listen and gives very little details, and screams are cringe worthy. Mistakes notwithstanding, it’s the voice and delivery. Him and Joe Nolan no bueno… throw the basketball announcer at JMA in there too, sick of his antics.
It’s the little things that helps a program look like big time or look like a YouTube program. Between the radio, which I listened to while I was on my way home on a Lift and I was like 😬😬😬. Carlin and the Rutgers PA guy must be related with both being horrible voices and don’t know what they’re doing. Add the jock rock music/ random noises with the volume up at a seizure causing 95 and a radio crew that sounds like they’re doing a companion watch on Twitch , it makes Rutgers look like small time and embarrassing .

💯💯💯

Carlin is great to listen to! His excitement and enthusiasm are contagious. Enough with the negativity about everything! Christ, give it a rest!
If that were true this type of thread wouldn’t appear every season.

For the industry, I think he’s very talented. But don’t feel play by play is necessarily his forte.

Carlin is very good talk show guy . Or call in show host

It remains a shame that Rutgers graduate RIch DeMarco was never hired for the RU radio play-by play job. He's been at Army calling games for two decades for anyone unaware. Terrific play-by-play guy for both football and basketball. Would have been a great choice.

And no, I'm not Rich or his agent. Just someone who has respected his work for a long tine dating back to his days as WRSU sports director.
