The podcast with Rick Boyages (currently the most recent in the link) goes into officiating and touches on some of what’s frequently been discussed here.

Starting around 01:07:00, he gets into why conference games can be officiated differently in the first and second half (politics and officials knowing players with 2 fouls in the first half will sit), how teams can be officiated differently (refs are aware of foul count discrepancies and some teams have tendencies to foul more/less, so may be watched more closely to even the count), and how the “old boys network,” shortage of young refs, and independent contractor status negatively impact officiating, among other topics. Thought it was a good listen.

I don’t agree with the 2 fouls but definitely the rest of that which is total bullsht

obvious stuff for anyone who understands the college game....I've often called it theater and/or dance on the boards, and the guy calls it a soap opera. same thing.

There's a lot of nuance. Refs don't fix games but it's never only about the rules either. lots of considerations to appease both sides, for example, it never fails that reserves quickly pick up fouls to even the counts.
