From the day Ace committed until the 2024-2025 portal opened pike had 400+ days to build the NIL war chest

Purdue Wisconsin and Iowa are all what I would consider developmental.
Three teams out of 18 in the B1G Ten.Wisconsin got some talented players from the transfer portal.Purdue has the best head coach and Iowa has a offense that attracts 3 point shooters.

Still clearly you can have success being a developmental program. Not just in the big ten. Obviously you need to be good.

If a developmental program doesn't work in the B1G, what type of programs should Rutgers run? A Coach Prime football program and a Jerry Tarkanian basketball program?

Would be entertaining. Rutgers would sell more tickets at higher prices. Not sure Schiano and Pike could run programs with the pizzazz of Prime and Tarkanian though.

Hobbs was effective at pushing things through because he was a politician. People can disagree with that fact, but that’s just my take.

The Halloway/Hobbs thing was super short lived. Rutgers needs alignment for 20+ years to get to where they need to get to.

Three years ago I committed to giving a sizable (for me) annual donation to my high school (private NE prep). I did this for several reasons. Their rep connected with me and made me feel a part of the school/team again, we met for lunch and shared stories. I said I want all the money going towards the men’s lacrosse program and they gave me multiple donation levels and were direct about what they’d be buying with each level. Lastly, I had an overall awesome experience at the school and I’m happy to contribute towards that for the people coming after me.

I got a hand written letter from school leadership thanking me for my commitment, and a nice Nike men’s lacrosse hat. I was happy with that, and knowing I could help improve the experience of future lax teams at my old stomping grounds is awesome for me.

RU’s problem is that they’ve put out minimal effort. I’ve been around the University since I was like 5 years old, I’ve posted on this board since I was like 16. Other than John Newman posting about his NIL thing on here, not once has anyone ever reached out to me to make a donation. Or is the expectation that I go out of my way to give up money to a university I didn’t go to?

If they’re targeting RU grads only then their fundraising strategy is horrible. There are plenty of non grads in the area that are proud to call RU their state university. Maybe they should try providing those people with more access for some small donations. The truth is our B1G peers have a bigger pool to draw from because the university is an extension of the state/region, not just the people that actually went there.
Not understanding your point. You said you didn’t go to the university. How are they supposed to find you as a donor? Write a big check and I guarantee you will get a call. Your story about your high school is not remotely close. It would be if it was a high school you didn’t go to. I’m not a big donor but give enough that I get letters from the deans to thank me for the donations.

Rutgers has plenty of new donors - 7,500 first-time donors last year according Holloway.

The previous year, Holloway confirmed 14,000 donors contributed to the Scarlet Promise Grant, an academic scholarship program that hit its $50 million fundraising goal ahead of schedule.

New Jerseyans in general and Rutgers donors in particular care more about academics than college sports.

TKR posters need to accept this situation is unlikely to change in our lifetimes.
Im talking about athletics donors. I don't care about giving money to the academic side. I know you do and I hope it's to a worthy department otherwise you're setting it on fire.

Years ago Rutgers decided to join the B1G Ten Conference.Rutgers was told the facilities needed to be enhanced in order to successfully compete. They were given a loan to help with the transition .The State of New Jersey helped with funding the practice facility. Its now 2025 and the athletic department lacks a director .There are 22 teams all having difficulty competing against league rivals.Blaming fans/donors that have supported their favorite teams for decades is ridiculous. The problem is the donor base is too small from alumni and there aren't enough big donors .The NIL and transfer portal give decided advantages to schools with a winning tradition and financial resources to attract top tier coaches and recruits.
We were not given a loan to help with the transition. Let me refresh everyones memory:

We were given a loan because as we entered the B1G with an athletics department that had D2 facilities across basically every sport. Bob Barchi decided to let athletics die on the vine and not spend any money on sports because "Med Merger". We had to get a loan just to fire Flood and hire Ash. Hobbs comes in and immediately gets 3 projects off the ground for facilities within 3 years (with the help of Senator Lesniak who got us badly needed money for the practice facility after DEI hire Julie Hermann told the court club there was no money and we were basically on welfare). His failure was maybe not expanding the donor base fast enough but he got us a hoops practice facility an academic center for all sports and the football practice field....and you can argue the updated football weight room and basketball weight room.

Can't say I disagree. One of my R Fund reps who was a former player was pretty awful and never would reach out to me for 2 years.

Fair point on the differences, and you’re right.

I guess my point is that everyone I know that’s given to Rutgers, I’m not so sure they’ve felt as much love as you’d think.

As for them finding me, that’s their job, not mine. Get creative. I mean my email and contact info is 100% there for RU to track down, it’s not the 90s, it’s pretty damn easy for them if they put the slightest bit of effort into it.

Personally I think they need to adjust their thinking to be a heavy focus on the state of NJ rather than only going after RU grads.

There are A LOT of people in this region that went to schools that don’t have big time athletics. Bring those people into the fold, it’s crucial for the growth everyone is asking for.

You don’t think there’s a wealthy D3 grad somewhere in NJ that would love to get involved with RU athletics? They’re out there, the University just needs to work for it.

Good post,

To this point, it's critical that Pike gets JMike, Grant, Dortch, Ogbole and Sommerville back On The Banks next year.

His system works, but he must have "experienced" cogs in place from day 1
If the system includes what we do on offense then it doesn't fully work.

I think you are the exception, not the norm. I’m sure RU would love your support/money. Sometimes, you just have to give them a hint. There is a large alumni they need to cultivate. That’s the low hanging fruit for them.

A developmental program doesn't work in a power conference like the B1G Ten.The competition coaching and talent is too strong.Rutgers has great difficulty winning even half of league games.Adding the four teams from the west coast makes winning even more difficult.
"Developmental" may be the best we see around here... ever. I doubt we get better than that unless Rutgers (the university) undergoes a fundamental change in culture. Seems to me RU continues to be a fragmented, political, poorly-run mess on multiple levels... unable to get out of its own way long enough to realize it's full potential, and the athletic department is just the most visible manifestation of that.

Can you tell I'm losing hope? It only took 36 years.

Great. At best just 1 Big10 caliber starter and still no adequate starting big.

No program with enough $$ to lure them away will want them anyway, so the idea of needing to keep them is moot.
Not having an elite big man is not what is limiting this team in the way most people think. I know most will disagree but Ogbole and Sommerville can be a viable tandem at center and RU won't have to commit all of its NIL to another big. In theory, Pike should be able to have some more experience with the team constructed below and gameplan around his team's strengths/weaknesses

Retaining JMike, Ogbole, Sommerville, Grant, and Dortch with one of Derkack or JWill should be a viable foundation along with the freshman and adding the RIGHT transfers (ideally a couple of which are power 5). There should absolutely be enough NIL to build that team.

Not sure if that is "Vitaminwater guy" Mike Repole in the image or not, who by the way sold Bodyarmor for more than he sold Vitaminwater.

What I do know is the NY Post reported last night that Mike is matching NIL contributions to St. John's collective up to $1 million. Donors giving $25,000+ get dinner with Mike and Rick. $10,000+ gets donor and 2 guests access to MSG luxury lounge for entire next season.

Would be nice to see Rutgers athletic department and the school's larger athletics donors generate excitement and publicity like this.

Do you seriously not know who that is in the picture?
