WEEK 3 TOP 20 SCHEDULE AND PICKS
No. 1
Bergen Catholic (2-1) at
St. Edward (OH) (3-1)
Saturday, 1
Bergen Catholic scored on seven of its 11 drives in its loss to IMG Academy as quarterback Jarrett Guarantano passed for a state-high 379 yards and four touchdowns. The Crusaders will try to light up the scoreboard again against a St. Edward squad led by the hard running of senior tailback Cole Gest, who rushed for 133 yards and two scores in a Week 1 loss to St. Joseph (Mont.).Bergen Catholic 35, St. Edward 21
Eastern Christian (Md.) (1-2) at No. 2
St. Joseph (Mont.) (3-0)
Saturday, 1
Eastern Christian is 1-2 but that one win came against Paramus Catholic on opening night. The school from Elkton, Maryland gets it done with speed and athleticism and fortunately for St. Joseph, the Green Knights held DePaul’s speedy athletes to one touchdown last week in a 20-7 victory. The St. Joseph defense has been better than expected and shutting down Eastern Christian, which put up 42 points on Paramus Catholic, would be an even bigger boost. St. Joseph 24, Eastern Christian 14
Marlboro (0-2) at No. 3
Middletown South (2-0)
Friday, 7
Middletown South got tailback Cole Rogers untracked last week against Neptune and the now the Eagles have a two-pronged rushing attack with James McCarthy. The Eagles have too much might for the Mustangs to handle. Middletown South 34, Marlboro 7
Archbishop Rummel (La.) (3-0) at No. 4
Don Bosco Prep (2-1)
Saturday, 8:30
The Louisiana powerhouse comes to New Jersey as the higher-ranked team in every national poll but the Ironmen are ready for the challenge. Greg Toal’s team is 26-4 against out-of-state opponents and has only lost to Miami Central within the confines of Granatell Stadium. If Don Bosco can win the time of possession and impose its physicality, it will be a happy centennial celebration in Ramsey. Don Bosco Prep 21, Archbishop Rummel 17
No. 5
Paramus Catholic (1-2)
Idle.
No. 6
St. Peter’s Prep (2-0) vs.
St. John Bosco (CA) (4-0) (at Don Bosco)
Saturday, 5:30
If you like offense, this is definitely going to be a matchup for New Jersey football fans to attend. The high-octane O of St. Peter’s Prep will go up against St. John Bosco (Calif.) as part of Don Bosco Prep’s 100-year celebration. The team from California is ranked No. 7 on MaxPreps’ Xcellent 25 rankings and enters the weekend showdown with a 4-0 record. St. Peter’s Prep is 2-1 following a victory over Seton Hall Prep last Saturday. In order for the Marauders to come out on top, they’ll have to play perfect football. The Braves can hurt you through the air and on the ground, so the Prep defense will have to be locked in. Can St. Peter’s Prep pull off the upset? We think it’ll be a good game, but St. John Bosco should pull away late. St. John Bosco 42, St. Peter’s Prep 28
No. 7
Jackson Memorial (2-0) at
Southern (1-2)
Friday, 7
Jackson Memorial will stick to a familiar script, establishing the run with tailbacks Vinny Lee and Mike Gawlik and then giving improving quarterback Dan Barker high percentage shots off play action. It’s the final tuneup for the Jaguars who get Brick Township, Toms River North and Brick Memoiral consecutively – all huge Class A South games. Jackson Memorial 28, Southern 7
No. 8
Timber Creek (2-0) at No. 16
Delsea (2-0)
Friday, 7
Both teams are coming off huge wins, the Chargers capturing a Top 20 showdown with an impressive defensive effort in an 18-7 victory over Cherokee, while the Crusaders knocked off then-No. 8 Camden, 25-19. Timber Creek will be playing without Michigan State-bound WR Cameron Chambers. Can Delsea grind out another win against a Top-10 team? Timber Creek 21, Delsea 17
No. 9
DePaul (1-2) at
Canisius (N.Y.) (3-0)
Saturday, 1
DePaul’s defense kept the Passaic County school in the game against St. Joseph (Mont.) but three fumbles ultimately plagued the Spartans. The offense will try to get back in a groove after being held to 134 yards of offense when it travels to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on undefeated Canisius. DePaul 35, Canisius 14
Morris Knolls (2-0) at No. 10
Roxbury (2-0)
Friday, 7
Roxbury’s battle with Delbarton was supposed to be the biggest game of the year in the NJAC. But this week the Gaels face a squad that downed Delbarton in Morris Knolls. Quarterback Grant Dixon has been as good as advertised and the offense has thrived, but the defense could be tested against a Golden Eagle attack featuring efficient passing from Nick Vittorio and great running from Jayson Parisi. Roxbury 35, Morris Knolls 24
