Unbelievable! What a game! What a gritty performance by the players! What a coaching effort! What a crowd! What a signature win!

Just so many superlatives today as RU did the unexpected against a team that on paper simply has more talent. Its not just talent that wins games. Its desire, effort, heart and coaching. If you don't have some of those you cannot win. RU and Pike took SHU and Willard to the woodshed in the department as the Pirates simply crumbled under the cacophony of the RAC crowd. SHU had no response when RU upped its game at two points in the 2nd half and Pike's coaching ran circles around a bewildered Willard who was rendered to a limp catatonic state by games end.

There were several times in this game where it appeared that RU would get run out of the building. SHU came ready to play jumping on RU very early as it seemed like they brought their A game. Neutralizing the crowd at the start eventually their lead got to 26-13 and things were not looking good for RU. But credit to the RU players as they have done most of this season. Resilient as usual they faced adversity and managed to crawl back into the game in the by the last minute of the first half managing to get within 6. An ill advised last minute though saw the Pirate lead bulge to 10 at half.

Quite frankly at halftime it looked like RU simply did not have the horses. Everytime RU would cut and chip away, SHU answered with a 3 or a dunk. In fact at halftime I said, this team is not ready to win a game like this in this kind of environment and pressure situation and we would have to wait for more talent. Well I was wrong, dead wrong. The team, the staff, and the program grew up in the 2nd half. They just put their head down and kept doing things the Pikiell way...scrapping, rebounding, getting into those lanes to get hands on balls to cause turnovers, getting back to playing tough D and all of a sudden the game was tied. RU was dominating the so called better team. At 54 all, RU had all the momentumn in this game and the RAC was absolutely rocking. But perhaps more impressive than that rally was the mettle that RU showed after SHU went on that 9-0 spurt that made it seem like uh oh here we go, game over. Again the bugaboo that had plagued RU vs FSU/Minny/MSU....being able to make a shot in the half court to respond to the opponent's run. Well this time it was different. Started with Freeman who struggled all day with his shot and then ending with Corey simply taking over. I have been harsh on Corey all year because in games against cupcakes, he wasnt even the best player on the court. Today against a top 15 school, he was. Corey brought it into showtime. His two jumpers sandwiched between two made free throws put RU in control and gave them the breathing space to close out the game. Big time performance from him today. 22 points on 9-16 shooting and quite a game on defense registering 4 steals. This is the in control, steady Corey we have all been looking for.

And make no mistake about it, this was a team win as well. Everyone chipped in. Eugene continues to grow leaps and bounds. He stepped up and made two huge free throws at 69-65. Nearly registering a double double with 11 point and 9 boards. The key here is he is starting to do this against quality opponents. Huge huge progression for him. DeSean Freeman can be frustrating at times with his missed chippies and forcing ill advised no chance shots...struggling at just 3-14 his energy and his rebounding was that of a war horse. 16 boards and managed to get 12 points. Mike Williams another struggle with his shot but contributing in other ways most importantly 20 minutes of needed time with 2 steals and 4 boards. Mike came up with a huge steal with RU down 63-61 and also skyed for a big board at 68-65 on a missed 3 point shot by SHU.. Geo Baker, what can you say. Exceeding even the most optimistic expectations. Once again logging the most minutes at 36 and playing way beyond his freshmen years...17 points, 4 assists, only 1 turnover and getting to the line. For a freshmen to play so well in this kind of game and atmosphere is impressive. The other guys Doorson, Sa, and Thiam all relatively quiet but did exactly what their role was. They stepped up the plate and gave mistake free minutes. Seems unimpressive but what they did today was so vital to the rest of the team being able to claw back in.

And all of this is because of Steve Pikiell and his staff. Last year I would notice RU starting out slow against some cupcakes but sticking to their gameplan, making some adjustments and then suddenly good things happening. Today followed the same script. The Pikiell way....heart, desire, rebounding, coaching. RU won the game because they continue to follow the Pikiell way and stay composed in adversity. He has found a way to keep the kids working hard with their head in the game even as they struggle so mightily with their shot. If you told me RU would shoot 34% today and win by 6 today, I would have said you were nuts. Look no further than the offensive rebounding stats....19-13, that was huge today. SHU was the complete antithesis of RU today. A team who thought they could win just on talent alone and thought that a 9-10 point lead is enough to win. Short term, of course SHU is in a better spot than RU, long term is a different story. I wouldnt trade one of their players for ours..especially the thug Powell with his cheap shot, nor would I take their coach who was rendered to a pile of blue mush by games end.

Lets get to atmosphere, I am sure there are other threads speficially on the RAC....we can clearly say that today the RAC WAS BACK. This wasnt a pretend RAC crowd, I have heard some platitude of great crowd given to other games...meh....today, this game...the 8300 they crammed in there..today we got our RAC back, more importantly we got the HOPE back in the program that it does not matter what opponent is coming in, RU fans BELIEVE they will win in this magical pit of horrors that has become a graveyard for ranked teams all the while Rutgers itself has been quite mediocre

One last note...expectations...that a discussion for other threads, another day. Probably need to slow down with them right now. We have seen RU in this spot before with big wins over ranked opponents...Fla/UConn under Rice....and all those wins under Bannon/Waters. I think we know we are clearly on the right path to the promised land but not so sure we can pinpoint where exactly that is.

I don't get where people think that Seton Hall has so much more talent top to bottom. How many future NBA draft picks are on their roster currently? 1 second rounder at most? They have a few 4 star, top 150 type players and some role players, same as Rutgers does. What they have is more experience, but that sure didn't show up today.

Key coaching move

Going for a lot of minutes with Eugene and freeman and rotated the bench so they had some legs left with the 7-8 minutes to go

Forget the height...they defend the paint and bored as well anyone.

good point, I am loving the rotation and how Pike is using it. I know 36 minutes is alot for Baker and that could wear him down by years end but its almost a necessity

Great summary Bac. I said in another thread I didn't expect RU to win. Just seemed like a bad matchup to me. The thing you can't measure is heart and RU had it in droves.

Need to congratulate you guys. We have similarly shitty programs and we are both on the rise now. You might be there. You are going to need to pay Pikiell HUGE soon.

talent and experience is a deadly combo....that dwarfs what RU has. RU has some young talent but they are wet. Doucore was not ready for a game like this and only got 7 minutes. But as I said, coaching and desire can be an equalizer. SHU players basically curled in a ball when challenged. Not a good trait at all.

I am confused as to where we stand in the B1G. I don't believe we are 14th but not sure where we are. Doesnt help that we played 2 of the top teams to start. I have been watching a lot of B1G and I really don't think it's that strong this year and we can make somewhat of a move on some teams. Can we keep this kind of intensity all year? If so I don't see any other home games that we can't win (not saying we are going to win them all of course, but I don't see us overmatched either).

we are a perimeter shooter from being top half of league and bubble team .

I didnt like this matchup either. At halftime I thought RU was in big trouble too. SHU just so quick in transition, we had no margin of error for this game and had to be so on at certain points but by games end RU was playing like the better team...outscoring themn 39-23 hell yeah we won going away

Pikiell also took Sanders out, gave him a minute to collect himself, He was forcing passes, and got a little sloppy. Shot clock down 7, Sanders has ball, and SHU knows he is going to keep it. He does, turns the ball over, and forces a bad shot.

What happened afterwards?Sanders went back in, and rebounded.

Great game management. Very cool.

agree with that last part....RU is screaming for a 3 point specialist like alot of other teams have. As I keep saying we do have a slim margin of error to win these games. How far does coaching and heart and rebounding get you vs talent and the ability to put the ball in the hoop. At this point, the secret is out, I do not think anyone will take RU lightly anymore. You make a great point...I am confused too...where do we sit...today and the close calls vs MSU/FSU prove we can beat anyone at home...however can RU bring this intensity against Illinois at home or Nebraska on the road. Can the RAC bring the juice every game. The Big 10 ten may be a bit down but its extremely competitive. Winning big games is a great sign but winning games back to back and consistently is the true label of a good team...can we do that...what will we do vs Wisconsin

We outcoached the SHU. Said we would win on this board and we did!

As Bob Wenzel once said,
“Dream Big Dreams!”

Great job BAC; my thoughts pretty much across the board(s)!!!

...see what I did there??!!

BAC -Outstanding summary of the key points in the game along with the ramifications moving forward. This was truly a team win because there were moments in the game where Seton Hall was clearly in control.Pikiell kept the team fighting even with the poor shooting and then Rutgers went on a 17-2 run to take the lead and ultimately hold on for the win.The reaction of recruits at the game and those watching on television had to be impressed with Rutgers performance and the leadership of Coach Pikiell.

I also thought that we needed to control the Tempo and the second half ...and stop giving up junk

And we did.

Not sure why the hall slowed down their faster pace motion offense that we were always a quarter step behind in the first half ...it was working and wearing us out

We did a much better of hedging on the half court in the second half ...lot less spacing and a lot better timing

Very good summary Bac. The key is for us to build upon this win and develop consistency. Very impressed by the coaching today as well as the mental toughness of the players.

and thanks, good to see you post, any good news on the recruiting front.

I know I agreed with you about not expecting too much from Baker....incredibly happy to see how he has seemingly transitioned to being a big time player

Good summary. Some other thoughts: Rebounding!! I don't have the 2nd half stats, but RU seemed to kill them on the boards. Defense!! 23 second half points!! RU kidding!? Those two stats against the Hall!? Let's be real here, the Hall is a damn good team, filled with experience and talent, but RU finished in dominating fashion! Look out B10!!

Bac- great recap. I would also add that Shaq Doorson’s defense on Delgado was huge today! It’s a shame he could not finish his put backs because his defensive effort and rebounding were both very good.

Smothering......it's really the only description to account for today.

There are some things that are talent related and then there is an approach to eventually smother your opponent....You will read a lot of excuses coming from not just SHU going forward, but others that are going to rationalize what type experience the RAC is when it's "live".

The amount of deflections, rebounds by guards attacking the glass, making sure that our guards closed out on their shooters was a thing of beauty. They figured out that you can leave Delgado alone in the post and stay with their shooters.

I didn't see a lot of shots that were wide open in the 2nd half....and the contested one Powell hit in their 9-0 run , you tip your hat and just say good defense by RU....

At the end of the day, if you rebound and defend, you have a chance to smother any opponent.....I know it was poo-pooed, but we smothered Michigan State as well....they just did the same to us, forcing RU to 26% FG shooting....Miles Bridges made the difference with dagger 3's against tough defense again.....vs Florida State, Walker the guard from FSU blew past the RU defense that couldn't stay in front of him.........SHU has no such caliber player at point guard.

I felt this game looked like last year at the Rock....lots of missed layups by RU, blown opportunities and SHU gets back in the game with points in transition in the 2nd half to pull away late.....they did the same thing in the 1st half....points off run outs etc...eventually RU stopped shooting itself in the foot and just went to work.

RU can beat anyone if they take care of the ball and most of the turnovers were not forced by Seton Hall as much as they were RU sloppy plays....fortunately, they didn't quit, kept defending and made some timely shots.

It's mid December and I will say that while Seton Hall will be ranked most of the year, but I am not quite sure they possess the length of Florida State defensively.....they don't have the horsepower inside like Michigan State does..... they are closer to Minnesota....a talented team that is very streaky and capable of beating anyone by double digits if you get into an up and down battle.

Instead of running and gunning, RU made SHU run their half-court offense and RU smothered Seton Hall....And it wasn't a scenario where RU played an A+ game...Up next is eliminating the thought process that people will try and tell you that "SHU took RU lightly"....don't believe the hype.....RU smothered SHU for extended stretches last year at the Rock and did it again today in the 2nd half at the RAC.....Today was not an accident or SHU taking RU lightly....it was one program making a decision to keep working and let the chips fall where they may.

So....what's next......???.....

What's next is the buzz around the HS coaching and AAU circles regionally about how well coached RU looked today....a statement was made and eyes were opened today folks.....:eyes:...:eyes:....:100points:

Bac - agree about Baker. Far better than I ever expected. Particularly for a freshman. I was dead wrong.

Nothing particularly new on recruiting front. At least nothing I am aware of. I still think Mulcahy winds up at RU. You do not have to be connected to believe that situation. Ismael Massoud from NYC is intrigued by RU.

What would be interesting - at least to me - is if NYC big man Kofi Cockburn becomes serious about us. Christ The King 2019. Same school as Alvarado.

Great recap bac. You’re really on your game with these postgame summaries.

I though Pike made a masterful changeup in the last 10 minutes - he went SMALL, with just Freeman and Omoruyi in the post. I initially thought that was a dangerous strategy against Delgado, but Omoruyi absolutely STONED Delgado with some great post defense.

Sanders was definitely the MVP today, but Freeman (16 rebounds), Geo (17 points and 4 assists), and Omoruyi (11 points, 9 rebounds, great post defense) were unsung heroes.

Best game at the RAC in a very long time. The RAC most certainly is BACK.

I had us struggling early, keeping it close and winning by 3 in the predictions.
[thumb2]Lucky guess [thumb2]

I dont know if its been mentioned but this was our guys first "grudge game" so to speak where SHU came out jawing from the getgo trying to bait our players nose to nose to intimidate them.

Our guys didnt fall for it. After the double technical the team stuck to the game, kept total COMPOSURE & just wore SHU out.

I will never forget the look on SHUs players when they were down with 50 sec to go.

Priceless!!!!
[cheers]

Corey was incredible today. Just incredible. There is a lot of basketball left in this season, and it could get interesting.
Geo played 36 minutes, and it was a hard 36 minutes. He was chasing SH's shooters all over the court. I love this kid.
Fantastic job by Pike today; pushed every correct button.

RU lured SHU to play their type of game in the 2nd half. Great coaching and commitment by the RU players to defense and rebounding.

They frustrated some good experienced SHU players.

Baker didn't look like a Frosh.
Just seemed like Freeman and Cory wanted it more at the end of the day.

I really liked the red uniforms at home that contrasted the blue.

Took a trip over to Seton Hall's website and it's a clusterf@ck over there. They are spraying so much hate it's not even funny. They can't find it within themselves to give credit. Instead, they are taking cheap shots and showing your true colors... bitter blue.

Nice job bac

IT was like watching Rocky. Finally knocked down Clubber Lang. We took a ton of punches, but never went down.

This was an unbelievable win that I could not have scripted any bettter. To win by getting stops and have a bad day from the perimeter!

Thanks Eddie Jordan for recruiting Mike Williams. That was the best awful box score game a man can have.

The 5 guys that finished the game played so hard and showed a massive amount of guts.

I'll give one negative thought so not to disappoint anyone.......it is an absolute joke that Mike Williams isn't a starter. The man is a senior and embodies everything the program is about.

Us fans really deserved this game. So far this year I have perfect attendance at home games and have been through a ton of bad basketball over the past few years. This was a sweet sweet victory! I have a feeling this won't be like What happened after the Wisconsin victory.

Litigating the past (MSU)....today on the court we saw the best opponent of the year.

Shoe is what I thought they are: not mentally tough, overhyped, not coached well...
Much like that joke of a school: not smart
Enjoy the BE and getting into the tourney: no one cares. no one respects them nationally

Love the way Eugene is developing...

Didn't get to see the game as I was on a plane but that's silly.

My HS coach used to say that when you go on the road you need to bring your lunchpail----it appears that RU took SH's lunch.

Yes...seton hall is a very good basketball team . Without doubt

A threat to win two to get and get to the regionals
In the NCAAs

Yet, I don’t think we are that far behind

I think if we play them ten times ...five home and five road ...think it’s SHU 7-3 or SHU 6-4

IMO....the perception upset is much bigger than the on the court difference between the two.

And I say that with respect for what our adversary can do as a very good team

Think RU is pretty good too

SHU from a talent perspective is light years ahead of us. I'd need to see them play more before dismissing their toughness.

I have to say I was disappointed in Delgado. We rolled the dice by playing a 3.5 on him (Eugene). Delgado was a non factor on offense.

The resilience of RU was amazing today. Really special and extremely character building.

I actually think the officiating yesterday was the norm that occurs in most games in the country which unfortunately has not been the norm at the RAC. The officiating was actually consistent and believe it or not fair even with the disparity of foul shots.

According to many thankfully not all Seton Hall fans RU did nothing to deserve this win which I believe it is quite disingenuous.

Those who dismiss SHU are mistaking themselves. They are a very fine team that just happened to lose to a vastly improved team that plays tough defense , rebounds , is resilient and is very well coached. Rutgers still lacks a Powell-type player who can make three's from all over the court but who knows, Peter Kiss may be that guy. Best thing about Rutgers--great kids. You can just see it in their body language , their smiles , their desire to excel beyond their abilities. Many call it heart.... I couldn't be happier for them.
