Okay probably going to shorten this recap because I am stuck with jury duty so I have to calm myself down early.

OMG what a great feeling it is to win....6 conference wins, when the hell was the last time we had this many. The fans have been thirsty for wins for years. We have waited so long. These are not sips anymore, these are victory chugs. RU is winning because RU is a good team. Its only the beginning. This team is taking us to the river and Pike will lead us to the Promised Land...and so it will be done.

Tonight was a game where it seemed like the team blew a chance to take control of the game at 48-45 losing all momentumn and then had to fight back from a 5 point defecit as a 12-4 run over 4 minutes left RU wobbly. Seemed like Minny was able to get inside and RU lost their edge on defense. Conversely on offense RU got caught rushing things with ill advised 3s and not finishing in the paint. At that point I commented in the game thread, it really looked like RU didnt want this game and Minnesota was making the plays to win. But monmentumn in hoops can change in the snap of a finger. Credit this team and Pike for having RU try and draw some fouls and get to the line. Unbelievably foul shooting was a big part of why RU won the game. RU hit 8 of 10 free throws down the stretch led by Geo with 3 and Gene with 2 and Cold Blooded Caleb broke the Gophers hearts by calming draining the final 2 to put the game away. And add in a clutch 3 by Montez to cut the gap to 1 and then Geo with 6 straight points. If there was any doubt whose hands you want the ball to be in during crunch time, Geo emphatically has erased that doubt. That 3...that monster 3 at 61 all. He was so confident on that, he knew he was going to hit it, this wasnt a clunker clanker that dropped like vs Iowa this was a beauty. And not the previous play he blocked the Klascheur shot. Baker made the play there and he was going to make it on the other end. No doubt. To win games, you need players to step up and make plays..simple as that. Geo has shaken off the haters from last month and is stepping up in a big way. It was a team win for sure today but Geo was special tonight. His play on defense in 2nd half stepping into passing lanes and poking the ball away with a couple of steals led to some needed transition buckets. I thought he played ferocious D.

Just some comments on everyone else. Montez Mathis, welcome back we missed you. You know what I think Pike has done a great job this year in trying to mold him and keep him control. He was yanked vs MSU and was very effective today in being aggressive without hurting the team. 18 points, 7-13 shooting, that big 3, yes only 3-7 at line but 3 of his last 4...that is a nice sign and something he can take into the next game. Once again Mathis defense was solid. He remains the best of the freshmen overall and I mean that. Eugene..again what can you say. It seems like he needs a wakeup call sometimes...first half was not good at all from him. frustrating to watch. 2nd half Pike made a concerted effort to make sure they got him the ball and he worked hard to get around Murphy who can be a moose inside. 14 points, 9 boards, 2 clutch free throws, a typical stat line for him and he really shut Murphy down and that was big. Eugene also had a big steal at 45 all and the assist to Mathis for a sweet dunk that put RU up 48-45. I thought Myles Johnson and Caleb McConnell really helped a struggling RU in the first half. With Geo sitting and Eug quiet, I thought both picked the slack up hitting the needed baskets to keep RU in range. Thats fitting their rolls for this game, this wasnt going to be the game where Pike was going to call on them to win it for RU. Its about making a couple of shots and playing strong defense and that they did. Peter Kiss also contributed with a quick flurry of 5 points in the first. Everyone else..well hey Thiam made a basket, Carter got some rebounds, Doorson clogged the middle and ya know that foul he made on Murphy turned out to not be all that bad. I thought Harper struggled this game, too anxious to be the man hitting the big shot but I like Pike recognized this.

If you think foul shooting doesnt win and lose you games..this game will give you an education. RU was 13-19 and It think 12 for its last 14 and Minnesota was 10-20, they left so many points on the court...those two missed by Murphy but an earlier miss on the inexplicable foul on the dunk. As crazy as it sounds, it was RU who won the game at the line.

But lets also give credit to Pike, His gameplan to shut down Coffey and Murphy worked really well especially in the 2nd half. It was just Klascheur was a sick shooter in the first half, hard to expect that but obviously RU wasnt playing great D on him. Credit Pike for getting him in foul trouble, I think a Montez drive early gave him his third and really changed the Minny offense for a while where RU got back into the game. I thought the intensity of D in the 2nd half particularly from Baker is a testament to what Pike says in the lockerroom, this is a team locked into their coaches head.

Best defensive play of the game...with an assist from the boisterous RAC crowd was the Minnesota shot clock violation at 2:22 following the Mathis 3 that cut the gap to 1....HUGE HUGE stop, I thought the RAC was tremendous on that play, the loudest they have been all year long and Minny really was panicked and that shot clock was really winding down...they finally were able to put up a shot but it was just a nano second too late. A real swing point and then Geo took over. Kudos to the RAC tonight, it was a very generous crowd for a Sunday night and it wasnt propped up by opposing team fans. 7270, best crowd of the season who wanted to give RU a needed lift and RU responded by quenching their thirst with a scintillating finish

oh and quick thought about Little Ricky..he has talent but for some reason after a strong OOC slate this team continues to come up short. I just think he is failing to push the right buttons and dare I say they lack toughness when it comes down to it. Minny needed this win tonight. This loss puts them perilously close to missing out on the NCAA tourney so they will need one big win down the stretch to get them back on track. I dont think there is much difference between they and RU really. Its just that they have a little more experience so they were able to come out of the gate strong in non conference....RU needed time to gel but really these are even teams at this point.

And hoops can be cruel right...Iowa loss last week, victory tonight. The ability of this team to continue fighting and clawing and scrapping even though it does not look pretty a times makes them a team no one really wants to play. We are well passed the point where any win is fluke. RU is now 10th in leading and very close to being in the 8/9 game. We have reached the point where RU is bringing that consistent competitive effort night in and out. Yes they have learned some painful lessons along the way but man who thought with three games left all in March how meaningful and how winnable the final 3 games are. Opportunity abounds.

- Montez Mathis 3 point shot with about 2 minutes left in game was the biggest play in the game. He misses and Minnesota comes down and scores - we're down 6 - and game is probably over.

- Pike and staff did great job on Murphy...he was a non factor.....

- Eugene stayed within himself.....dominating inside.......

- Geo got the call late in game from Ref...that's called earning respect.....

- Geo got the call late in game from Ref...that's called earning respect.....
I wondered what Minny thought of that call but McBrayer was out at halfcourt with his hand raised and the Anthony Weiner look on his face so I think he knew he got him on the arm.

OMG what a great feeling it is to win....6 conference wins, when the hell was the last time we had this many.

Been a little while.

2011-12, Rice's team was 6-12 in the Big East en route to a 14-18 finish. That's the only 6-conference-win season we've had since Gary Waters last year in 2005-06, where we went 19-14 (7-9).

Funny what happens when we get the same amount of foul shots as opposing team.

McConnell follows Gio with ice water in veins with foul shots. Should be getting Harper minutes who almost shot us out of game.

Gio is Mr. Clutch.

Montez was quite good going to the hoop.

Could see Minnesota v the SHU as a play in game for 12 seed.

RAC was a blast for those who want a generic multi purpose arena. We really should improve and embrace the RAC. Let Band do thing and dance team best of year.

Good national anthem although bud light costume... lol... and Red Panda was great.

For Pitino bashers thought he was classy.

Great coaching and comeback by Pike. Nice halftime adjustments.

Only medium shirts left? Odd. Not high school seniors.

Thiam and Kiss very nice minutes in First half.

Track runner was very cool. Why wait so long for soccer? Should have been November.

How does MSU beat UM? Stunning.

The Iowa and Minny games (and the first 30 minutes of the MSU game) are the culmination of the growth and development of this team.

We have gone from a team comprised of Geo and Gene, plus a bunch of green supporting parts, that was easily stymied against good defenses, to a team that has multiple weapons, any of which can strike at any time and in any game, and that can go toe to toe with just about any team on the schedule.

It’s just so great to see the players’ hard work get rewarded with a win in front of the home crowd. And in this game, unlike some other wins, there was ALOT to cheer about in this game. The team gave us “moments” that got us cheering wildly, making this the loudest RAC crowd in quite some time.

Now it’s time for the payback at Carver Hawkeye. It’s going to be a difficult game, but Iowa doesn’t play defense like MSU, so we can keep the game close and then hopefully pull it out in the end.

For now, let’s all savor this really satisfying win.

Great recap as usual BAC. The biggest takeaway tonight and over the last 5-6 games , is when we play defense like we know how, we are a tough ass team. I mean that in the most complimentary way. It has taken us forever to be known as a tough team. Izzo says it, Pitino says it, McCaffery says it, and so on and so on. Coach is constantly praised by his peers, and not in a phony way, but in a real way for how he has molded this team and gotten us competitive. It was on full display tonight. We were tougher than Minnesota and continued to attack and now have the mental toughness to compete and win. It has taken more than 10 years to get it back and with Coach it is here to stay.

Another sign of toughness is resiliency and our team has it. When we went down 9 early in the second half and came back to tie at 37, or when we almost were going to blow them out of the gym but Harper throws up 2 air balls, and instead of going up 9 or more, we lose a three point lead and are behind again. I actually thought we were blowing our chance to beat Minnesota and we did not stomp on their throats. Once again our team tied it up and took the lead. Then we lost it again and they were up 59-55 and things did not look great and Montez hits the monster corner Three with the dish from Geo, and then Geo does his step back after going to the glass on a nice drive . Every time we answered the bell. This is one of many games we do not just die when we get down 10 but continue to fight to get back in it , as we did it in the Indiana and Nebraska and Ohio State wins. The mental fortitude instilled in the players by Coach and his staff are a great trait of our Rutgers team.

I thought that Montez was terrific tonight. He flies down the court on fast breaks and glides. He hit that huge 3 and had the guts to not hesitate and just launch it , as true as could be. That was the biggest play down the stretch that set the stage for Geo, but if he doesn’t make that 3 , Minnesota with the rebound could have gone up 6-7 on the next trip and Geo’s heroics might not have been enough. After an off season perfecting his foul shot, Montez is going to be unreal next season, but I do think he deserves some consideration for the freshman all conference team.

Geo and Eugene were not terrific all game as Geo was in foul trouble in the first half and Eugene couldn’t finish early. But Eugene was really outstanding in the second half and was unstoppable for a stretch as neither Murphy ot Atour could defend him. He made our offense efficient as we were converting every trip. Geo down the stretch did what the star of the team does, he takes over and hits big shot after big shot to get us the victory. You had to feel terrible for him last week after he hit the apparent game winning 3 against Iowa and then have it snatched away. Again mental toughness, to be in a similar situation 1 week later and to drive for the kiss, then hit the step back 3 and then to ice the game with foul shots, tells me how tough he is. Props to Geo , our captain.

Eugene and Geo have help and options offensively, with Montez, Ron, Myles, Caleb and Shaquille’s and it is making us a better team that is harder to defend . I feel any game in this league we now have a real chance to win and not just compete and that feeling started about 5 games ago when the dedication to defense returned. I really liked our chances in this last 4, and getting Minnesota out of the way, sets up perfectly for exacting revenge next Saturday at Iowa where we will be out for blood and to show them we were the better team the night they lucked out and again on their home court. it is so much fun and exciting and satisfying rooting for this team . I was a little sad that this Minnesota game leaves only 1 home game left as the team is really gelling now and I do not want the season to end. I really think we have a chance to finish strong right through the Big 10 tourney. We could get to the 7 line in the bracket and that would make us really dangerous.

Glad they found a way to win. Wasn't interested in a post game recap that focused on youth and learning how to win. They just needed to be a lot better than they were in the first half. Credit to Pike for getting on them at half time and making the necessary adjustments.

We are still offensively challenged which why making FT's can be very helpful. Montez was terrific and I really like his game on the open floor. The corner three was huge.

The defense was pretty good except for losing #22 too often in the first half. We played big and physical and it is in our best interest to continue to do so.

I continue to think EO can play smarter at times. I don't think he always plays within himself.

Last two things: How does the ref standing right in front of the Minnesota bench not call the foul on Doorson but our boy Bo does? It was clearly a foul but he shook his head no. Goes to show you how subjective calls are.

Finally it was nice in Geo post game press conference when he mentioned that their focus is playing for Shaq Doorson who only might only have 4 more games at Rutgers. Sometimes you forget the bonds these guys must form being together for such long stretches of time.

PSU at home, could be huge for the tournament.
Great observations Bac

I really liked our chances in this last 4, and getting Minnesota out of the way, sets up perfectly for exacting revenge next Saturday at Iowa where we will be out for blood and to show them we were the better team the night they lucked out and again on their home court. it is so much fun and exciting and satisfying rooting for this team . I was a little sad that this Minnesota game leaves only 1 home game left as the team is really gelling now and I do not want the season to end. I really think we have a chance to finish strong right through the Big 10 tourney. We could get to the 7 line in the bracket and that would make us really dangerous.

remember I talked about learning lesson in the MSU recap....they went on somekind of ridiculous 37-10 run where RU sputtered and melted down. Well last night after RU went up 18-10, Minny put up a 27-10 run on Rutgers and RU really looked like it was going to fall apart. The hole wasnt quite as deep to dig out from and Minny is nowhere near as good as MSU but this team learned to fight back and not lay down and as you said they were resilient not once but twice. RU is showing the ability that if they are hanging around late they have a decent shot to pull it off, even in the Iowa loss, RU fought from behind to take the lead.

What I love about this team is they're never intimidated , never look to be beaten, and don't panic no matter the score and remaining time. And they play with a confidence and at times swagger that too often past Rutgers teams lacked. It's noticeable how much the talent level has improved with no discernible drop in play and talent when subs come in. Finally , unlike past years, they're winning because they're as good or better than those teams and not catching a team on an off night or without a key player due to injury or illness. This team is just plain good .

BAC, I never felt last night we were going to fall apart. I did think we blew leads and the opportunity to extend the lead. . In the first half we are up 18-10 and Issa misses a wide open three that would have gotten us to 21-10, and instead we lose Kalschal for multiple threes and we are down 22-21. Being down 7 at half or 9 in the first minute didn’t faze me. But when we were up 48-45 after Montez monstrous dunk and the RAC was ready to explode, Harper air balls those 2 open threes that could have extended it to 9, and then we lost the lead again and was down 59-55 until the Montez three . The team has been fighting back all year ,except early against St. John’s and Maryland , but the next stage of development is learning to extend leads so that every game doesn’t come down to the last few possessions

I thought the referees were horrible. (jk)

I think they did a good job.
I really didn’t notice any blatantly missed calls either way. Some might say the foul call when Geo shot late was in our favor.
It might have been, but I think the player was hand checking Geo when he started his drive, so I think either way we got the foul we deserved on that play.

But nothing like the phantom Harper OB vs Michigan State.

How about the Murphy air ball?
Nice!

Mathis 30
Eugene 29
Baker 29
Doorson 22
Harper Jr 22
Caleb 19
Myles Johnson 19
Kiss 12
Carter 11
Thiam 7

This is the minute breakdown for RU...

Amir Coffey 40
Jordan Murphy 37
Dupree McBrayer 37
Gabe Kaucher 33
Daniel Oturu 26
Eric Curry 17
Brock Stull 8
Isaiah Washington 2

I am rarely a fan of playing kids 37, 38 minutes, but when you need a game like Minnesota did, you probably need to extend minutes to your bench.

Washington arrived as a Top 100-150 PG expected to take the reins....not only has the NYC product not stepped up, he and the bench have lost confidence from the staff.

We found minutes from Thiam, Kiss, Shaq Carter and Caleb to go with what I consider a co-starter in Myles Johnson at the 5.

18 bench points for RU and with Baker in foul trouble, Mathis. Caleb and Kiss picked up the slack.

The 19 minutes by Caleb, included some going underneath some screens chasing Kaucher, was frustrating to watch, but cleaned up the defense in the 2nd half and made some shots in the 1st half....the running banker was a huge shot to stop the bleeding.

The last 3 games in my opinion lie with how much production can we get from Caleb and Myles off the bench. And do they provide 18 to 22 quality minutes like last night. In crunch time, it was Caleb on the court, looking more confident on the rotations and grabbing the last rebound. Draining those 2 FTs was not easy.

We have a full week to realize we've gone from 3 regular season B1G wins, to 6 in one season with 3 games left to play. There's nothing wrong with making progress, but there's a lot of things RU fought through being down 7 at halftime that could've gotten away from things.

One other thought about Pitino Jr. going with 40 minutes with Coffey, 37 with Murphy and McBrayer is mindset and RU is now dictating to opponents that you can't buy minutes and sustain good play, when you remove your starters.

If you take McBrayer off the court, Mathis will get by Brock Stull into the lane for a layup....if Kaucher isnt trailing Baker because Washington isn't dialed in defensively, we will score points.

If I am a Minnesota fan, I'm asking questions not about just tonight's game but where Hurt, Washington, Stull, Curry are in a rotation.

Pike somehow figured out a way to keep minutes afloat for Thiam, Kiss and the up and down play of Shaq Carter and Caleb....if there's any chance at RU winning 2 more games and 1 in Chicago, it will come down to bench minutes and confidence. A lot of these coaches are shortening rotations, RU is sticking with playing it's bench and it's going to payoff in these last 3 plus games.

Wow! I didn't realize that 3 of Minnesota's starters played 37 and 40 minutes. No wonder they were a half step slow and a little out of focus at game's end.

Good thread. I think one of the reasons the kids never quit is because Pike trusts them and they feel it. I don't think that can be emphasized enough. If a coach trusts you and gives you confidence, how can you not play hard for him and your teammates. That's part of what makes Pike not a good coach, but a great coach.
Is it too premature to talk about an extension for Pike to lock him up?

He got a 3-year extension last winter through 2024. Obviously important for recruiting to have a coach who is here for the long haul, but there's of course no situation in which he plays out his contract and we split ways. He'll either be extended again, leave for a different job, or be fired by then. Obviously hoping for door #1.

I would think that perhaps next season or next off-season (summer of 2020) would be a good time to extend him and specifically re-work the details of his buyout, the amount he'd owe if he took another job.

How refreshing is it to worry about that kind of buyout and not the buyout it would cost for us to fire a guy?

Does Baker go on a tear at the end of the game if he had 35+ next to his name?

we will never know, but.......

Good point. Minny looked tired at the end. I know he is not a great foul shooter but missing those 2 of 3 foul shots at the end of the game, especially the way the first never even reached the rim, were misses that screamed tired legs. Our guys confidently drained their shots. This is the kind of team Pike likes. Long, athletic, aggressive and deep. He plays a lot of guys. Sometimes hurts because it effects the rhythm and limits the "hot hand" from emerging but it seems to pay off in the long run. Go RU

After the first miss, I thought the third miss was intentional.

Last two things: How does the ref standing right in front of the Minnesota bench not call the foul on Doorson but our boy Bo does? It was clearly a foul but he shook his head no. Goes to show you how subjective calls are.

.
My guess is the ref standing directly in front of the play felt the shooter initiated the contact with Doorson by jumping into him. IIRC, Shaq had leapt, and was already back on the ground when the contact was made. The shooter definitely leaned in a bit.
Just a guess, but with these officials, who the hell knows.

One thing I noticed that I haven't seen anyone else mention was the D on #22 in the second half. After he torched us in the first half with 5 3's, they made a conscious effort to find him and irritate him in the 2nd half.
We all recognize Mathis as an A defender, and Mathis was in his pocket for a good chunk of the 2nd half playing tight D and chasing around #22. It wasn't only Mathis, but when we needed to shut him down, I noticed Mathis played a lot on him.

Great game!

for me a bit.

so if I have to wait in the jury meeting area all day waiting to be called, Im going to have a thousand posts alone tomorrow...hope you guys are ready
At least jury duty in Somerset County is comfortable with a bunch of places to go eat at lunchtime. Union County, not so much...

Thanks for keeping the recap short as promised.. LOL

Seriously, nice job

Great game!

Gabe K isn't a player that demands extra attention. He is a spot up shooter and is really #3 or #4 or #5 scoring options. It was as simple as getting thru screens off the ball. A change of defender was all that was needed. I believe down the stretch Baker was on him. He is not the type of player you need to waste your best defender on.

Nut- I think he meant does he have that end of game burst if he had played 35+ minutes not points.

Does Baker go on a tear at the end of the game if he had 35+ next to his name?

we will never know, but.......

Good point. I thought his long rest with foul trouble in the 1st half was a big plus for Geo last night in the 2nd half. He had spring in his step, while the MN defenders did not.

I totally get his point. Geo has seemed to have fatigue at the end of games. Early foul trouble may have helped him out this game. But in the unlikely circumstance that he scores 35+ points, I'd be willing to bet we have a game like that well in hand.

Well he got his 3rd foul early in the second half, and Pitino sat him but when he came back Mathis was doing a great defensive job on him but it was Geo playing the great d and blocking his 2 point shot late. Overall our second half defense was outstanding.

No. Shooting an airball that was almost a full FOOT short wasn't because of fatigue. It was just a pure choke job in the face of a deafening RACmosphere.

Pike's post-game interview with Wenzel.. he complimented the crowd, the students and the great band... and it was real... not just saying the expected thing.

I LIKE PIKE.

I hope recruits like him more and more too.
