GAME 31 Nebraska: Bad Taste

The quick summary is athletic ability and how that impacts the game.

Too many comments about 6 scholarship players is irrelevant. 3 of the 6 are 3 of the 4 best players.

Mathis and Harper who improved more than anyone from November to March, are the only options to stop a Palmer...Mathis sat a LOT of the 2nd half when Palmer was keeping Nebraska in it.

Watson is a plus, plus defender who is or was as quick as Corey Sanders. It isn't a surprise he stopped Geo, Baker doesn't possess elite athletic skills like Sanders.

Mulcahy is Baker without a jumper and anyone thinking this batch of guards isn't challenging on defense, isn't paying attention.

Zavier Simpson - Michigan
Glynn Watson- Nebraska
Carsen Edwards Purdue
Cassius Winston- MSU
Trent Frazier- Illinois
Wheeler- PSU
Cowan-.Serrel Smith- Maryland
Phinise- Indiana
Muhammad and Jackson- Ohio State
Trice-Wisconsin

The only guard on our roster that has the speed, quickness, scoring ability and swagger to compete at this level of player above is Jacob Young.

Mulcahy is an important development piece but the frustrating process on having Geo play the way he did in the last 2 games is what EXACTLY anticipates happening next year for those stretches.

Mulcahy is not a jump shooter or possess the ability today to raise and shoot. And if he's not faster than Geo Baker, why wont the caliber of players on most B1G rosters, guard Mulcahy the way they guard Baker??

I am all for using the spring and summer for discussions on recruiting upgrades, but PG or guard is the least of my worries.

The upgrades needed are having a legitimate quick, athletic PF to replace Eugene down the road. The defense for PF can't be a gimpy Eugene, Carter or Doucoure, trying to stop most wings or forwards in 20+ B1G games.

The overall recap of the season is best suited after a night's sleep and watching more basketball....
I disagree with your assessment on mulcahy. He and Geo are apples and oranges imo. Mulcahy is good at getting to the rim and rarely looks to shoot. Geo is usually moreso looking for a shot rather than to drive. You wont see mulcahy taking fade aways

Your not getting to the rim in this league, there's help defense and the lane is crowded....Mergin Sina does an excellent job of spacing at Gill St Bernard in creating lanes and opportunities for Mulcahy to drive and find cutters....I dont see that type of offense working at the college level.

I ran down the list of defensive stoppers in the B1G specifically recruited for one reason....defense. Mulcahy will need to refine his teardrop or runner in the paint, to shoot over defenders, but i don't see him getting to the basket game after game in the B1G...the coaches are too good,.adjust too quickly and advance scout at a high level.

Whatever weaknesses a player shows, will be rapidly located and it takes a player to adjust and add to his arsenal.

Young is the only legit option that can get past a good defender and score. Mulcahy will better off making passes on the wing, making passes to bigs diving to the rim, making lobs to Myles Johnson and whomever else can catch and finish in traffic. I don't see Mulcahy being as effective at the top of the key, running an offense, until he's a shooting threat.

Just winning tonight would have gone a looong in the finish. Big Iowa win, terrible psu 1st half but huge comeback, near win, throw out Indiana...win first round after sliding down 2 spots...but get a tourney win. Then lose. Ok.

Not this . took it even lower. Not how you finish this year. Really poor job.
I just wanted a win tonight to consider it a good finish. Disappointed!

The team is playing overseas this Summer. Does anyone know if Mulcahy will be able to participate? I'm not expecting much from him but this would help.

I recall Brazdeikis played with Michigan on their overseas trip this past summer, so I'd assume so.

we dont have a backup PG.

Baker is shot right now

Exactly. Everyone is all over Geo, but the dropoff from him to the next guy is huge so he has to stay in.

Coaches figured out how to stop us, take out Geo and our offense is a mess. Coaches didn't adjust and nobody else stepped up.

Too many comments about 6 scholarship players is irrelevant. 3 of the 6 are 3 of the 4 best players.

The comments aren't about athletic ability, or the quality of those 6 players... it's that we went away from our inside game and didn't do nearly enough to attack those 6 players and put them in foul trouble. It's not about the abilities or conditioning or experience of those 6, it's about the lack of depth behind them to step in when they get called for fouls.

The game started off with a relatively tight whistle - and it at first felt like that would work to our advantage. But we never really put much pressure on them to defend us, as we just worked the ball around the outside most of the game. Instead, they put pressure on us - the tight whistle ended up hurting us more than them, because they were making our defenders work a lot harder than we were making theirs work.

And of the 20 turnovers, I'd say maybe half of them were caused by Nebraska. McConnell dribbling off his foot, Kiss throwing the ball away, Carter not able to handle passes, Omoruyi passing at people's feet, Harper with two shot clock violations where he didn't seem to know how much time was left.... then there were those that were partly caused by Nebraska, but were also us just being lazy with the ball on soft passes or bad entry angles.

The two shot clock violations drove me nuts, have to be aware of what is going on.

Throw in Palmer effect-----kid had a great 2nd Half.

Somebody on Rutgers has to be the guy that with 7-8 seconds on the shot clock you throw him the ball and let him go and score.

Not sure who that will be but would think it's Geo or Eugene O.

I was so distraught/angry after the game, that I couldn't bear to post on the message boards, so this is my first post in last night's aftermath. I won't belabor the points made by everyone here, except to say very briefly:

1. Geo and Mathis hit the wall, plain and simple. Mathis because he's a freshman, and Geo because of all of the accumulated minutes over the course of the season.

2. The Thiam Effect is not an "excuse" as some have said here. Rather, it's just the REALITY that the team was distracted and out of sorts after one of their own -- the LAST guy anybody would have thought would be involved in a domestic violence incident -- gets arrested, kicked off the team, and is now facing deportation. Even though what Thiam is alleged to have done is very bad, and he would deserve punishment if it's true, that does not mean that his FRIENDS on the team won't be devastated by the events.

3. I, too, don't understand why Pike wasn't pounding the ball inside on every single play. And when they started to double the post, the guys need to know where to pass the ball back out.

4. We again couldn't hit the side of a barn shooting threes. You simply cannot win in college basketball shooting 4-16 from 3-pt range. And one of those was a meaningless three by Geo after the game had already been decided. We have to hope that what Mulcahy and Young will bring to the table -- the ability to penetrate and dish -- will open up shooting for Harper and Geo on the wings.

5. The last three games leave a bad taste in everyone's mouths. But as we get some "distance," we will look back on the 2018-19 season as the turning point of the program. We've seen the upside, and the downside, and with so many young players who will be a year old, and adding in PM and JY, things are looking up.

Palmer is continuing scoring prowess against Maryland.Nebraska leads 32-20 at half time.
