Game Day Observations-Non Game Related

I think the students should be commended for being there. Being loud & staying until the very end

The ATVs stayed on the perimeter of the Blue lot this weekend although we did seem to have extra room between the rows.

The sheriff's officers are there to make sure there is no underage drinking or problems going on. I have no problem with them.

Blue lot was much better without the atvs. Think it could have been the luck of not may large tailgates directly opposite each other.

There was a student uhaul pickup truck with a bunch of beer. No dj stuff. Didn't seem like the cops gave them any trouble and the students did a good job.

Only problem was needing to argue with the parking people to be able to back into the spot. For some reason they were insisting that cars had to pull straight in (1st row 2nd set of cars) and not turn around. Blamed it on RUPD. Supervisor had to come over and make an exception which was kind of ridiculous. Stated they needed to keep traffic flowing unto the lot even though there were no other cars behind us when we pulled in.

Let's hope things keep improving.

On a different note- did they make a slight change of color to the numbers- much easier to see. And on TV, perfectly clear

I posted this last year and some changes were made but forgotten again this year. Can the DJ at the R Block Party take a break when the actual Rutgers Band starts playing at the Scarlet Walk?? It terribly annoying try to listen to the band when they are playing loud canned music less than 100 yards away. It also disrespectful to the kids in the band.

Are they selling clear drawstring backpacks? I emailed one of the associate ADs last year, and he said their merchandising partner was interested in making those for this season. (And I wasn't able to look at many merch stands on Saturday except one that only sold clothing)

Security seemed to allow plenty of people with opaque purses and backpacks inside the stadium and not turn them away, anyway.

On another note, we brought two friends to this game, a father and daughter, and the father said the game was exciting if you didn't care about who won, and he was interested in getting season tix next year.

I actually didn't think the environment was "electric," and don't think it has been for about 5 years, when Yoshi became a "thing" at the stadium.

Does anyone remember the almost stadium-wide "Lets Go Rutgers" cheers that would organically grow when there was a pause in the PA for a few seconds? Or "De-Fense!" cheers, or "Give me an R!"

The games used to be much more interactive, and to me, a better experience. The missing element is speaker silence. Now, if we aren't getting 5 second clips of dance music, its an advertisement. There's never any opportunity for organic crowd-led cheers. I know money talks and we need to pay for all the progress, but is today's game day experience manager afraid of what might happen if there were 15-20 seconds of silence from the PA?

To me- the glory years of being a fan was before they monetized the '05 and '06 success. Better side to side RU cheers, more interaction...I felt like I was a part of the army then.

The "atmosphere" has been fantastic, the last 5 years, during games. Bigger, louder, more "into it' crowds, than ever, other than 'Ville '06, USF 07, and a few other games here-and-there. Not really sure what games you've been watching?? Also, Yoshi plays pre-game, FOR THE PLAYERS AND STUDENTS, that's it. There is an in-house production team - granted a new one this year - that handles everything once Yoshi stops DJ'ing the pre-game.

It made quite the difference. Still a visible presence to keep people aware that they were there but without the ATVs plowing through the rows.

Frankly, if there was an issue, the officers on foot should get there first since they are in every row and the ATVs would be later since they could cover the greater distance of the perimeter and arrive to provide back up.

Oh jeeze. Please stop. 2006 was by far the biggest most hyped into it crowd ever and it's not even close! Do you go to the games or "watch" on TV.:cool2:

I thought Yoshi started doing the in-game music as well last year. I recall him posted as much here. I think he said he was very limited as to music selection during the in-game program.

LOL you're joking, right? In 2006 we had, at home:

Illinois/Ohio/Howard - big crowds but quiet, boring ones, for the most part, especially since 2 of the games were never really in doubt.
UConn- big, boring Sunday night crowd, on "egg shells" most of the evening
Louisville - greatest crowd ever in Piscataway (clearly pointed that out above...)
'Cuse - another huge crowd but, again, a rather mellow one due to the loss, a week earlier, to Cinci

Yes, I attended every game, shit, I was even on the cover of an online magazine following the Louisville game!

BTW - the "R-U" chant, following Grant's punt return TD to take the lead, was pathetic on TV. One of the letters, I forget which, was practically inaudible.

Is it just me or are the 50-50 totals much higher since they went to electronic tickets and not students walking around tailgates taking cash?

I'll check with him. I think he has some input but he definitely does not run the in-game show. That was Drew Robinson who has since left and was replaced over the summer.

Seems a good deal higher. Don't remember too many being over $30K. I was lucky to have a ticket seller find me on my way in. I did not win.

Gotta say, the 46,000+ fans were in full throated glory on Saturday. But in my seasons watching them as a student, the crowds were 3/4 less but just as vocal and loud (minus the public address system):

“It wasn’t hard for Scarlet coach Frank Burns to evaluate the unit that line coach Ted Cottrell, defensive back coaches Pete Savino and Bob Naso have molded into an outstanding mixture of young and old. ‘This is the best defensive football team I’ve ever been involved with,’ declared Burns afterward,” in the November 18, 1974 Targum. “The partisan crowd of 13,500 were aware of the defensive exploits. They honored Bob Naso’s crew vociferously every time the penurious unit completed their assignments.” This was the start of standing ovations and chants of “Defense! Defense!” each time an effective Rutgers defense left the field and would become a Rutgers Stadium tradition for the rest of the decade.

Nuts I am joking. Poking fun at your conflict this weekend but it was a good game to miss.
Also I was told by a few friends that the radio crew were very critical of Laviano being kept in after it was apparent he was limping. Did you catch any of that in your travels?

As far as a single game 2006 stands alone simply we had never experienced that. 2012 Ville was massively electric but since we had experienced that before it's not the same. You can only give up your virginity once.

WAY higher. the 50/50 on Saturday was $42,000 and the stadium was only 3/4 full.

also of note $20 now buys your 20 chances instead of the 2 it did last year and the 5 it did the years before.

Why do Rutgers fans always leave games early, even close ones?

I had to be asked to leave by an usher postgame, I was still so POd and stunned by the defense and Jacobs not picking it off.

Too many easy responses that I'll get reprimanded, by some, for typing. Let's just say: this IS New Jersey

I only handle Pre-Game music that's geared for the players during their warm-ups. In-Game music is controlled by game presentation up in the booth. If you have any suggestions for music to play pre or during the game, please send me a list of ideas that I can pass on. My main goal is to have every fan enjoy their time and experience at the stadium... Game Day is my specialty that I've handled since 2003 from the NBA, MLB and NFL and of course Rutgers Athletics. Any suggestions are truly appreciated.

You'll have to excuse the complainers who apparently haven't gone to other stadiums & only want their oldies, metal or country music at a low volume. Your music is good & the in game music is too most of the time (I'd bring back the NFL films music for Knights in the NFL video). Some of these people would've died had they gone to TTFP last weekend as the music was similar & much louder, especially pregame.

Horse seems scared. I noticed it the last 2 home games.

it may be a new rider....the horse almost took out a few band members when it came out for the intro. I am assuming its the same horse who is already trained and used to the crowd so me think its the knight that's screwing it up

I do have a suggestion as it pertains to future Homecoming Games (not tomorrow's game, although I will use it as an example).

The 2015 Homecoming Game means the 10th anniversary of the Class of 2005; the 20th - 1995; the 25th - 1990 and so forth. To honor the classes during the Homecoming Game, why not select a representative song/s from that year to play sometime during the game? The scoreboard can put up a "Congratulations Class of ???" and perhaps show photos out of the Scarlet Letter from that year. It could be played during breaks or going into/out of half time.

Good Idea. Looked up hits from 2005, 1995, 1985 and 1990.
2005- Hollaback Girl? I can't find any songs I recognize.
1995- Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio---that will go over well
1990-Cradle of Love--Billy Idol- of Do Me by Bell Biv Devoe
1985--Careless Whisper-George Michael--LIke A Virgin- Madonna- Wake me up before you go go -Wham?
1975- Love Will Keep us together-Captain and Tenille
1965--Wooly Bully-- (now we are talking!)

Please, I beg of you... no Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.

My suggestion is to be used for good.... not evil!

Hey man, those ain't my songs. Those were the "hits" that I recognized. I am a heavy metal and punk rock geezer. you want my choices?

2005-BYOB System of A Down
1995- When I Come Around- Green Day
1990- Hard To Handle- Black Crowes
1985- Money For Nothing- Dire Straits

Could not dig up metal and punk. is that list better?

That is the 50/50 "Pool"... winner is only getting half of that. My brother and I split the tickets and started thinking about what could get done walking away with $21K each... then it was announced the winners share was $21,000. Still a nice chunk of change.

I really like this idea. There would be some leg work in having members of each of the highlighted homecoming classes... but I have some ideas to present that would play off of this.

thank you for explaining how a 50/50 works. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I thought the entire day was kind of somber. All the off field stuff has apparently affected the fans A LOT imo. The part of the Black lot I was in was really quiet compared to last year. The biggest excitement I had pre game was jump starting another tailgater's car.

Walking to the stadium and once inside I never got the feel of a homecoming game or general fan excitement. Even when RU did something good it just didn't feel like people were really into it.

Your resources could be the Scarlet Letter yearbook; some highlight headlines out of the Targum; photos of the time, even transferred movies and perhaps some video of top stories in the country/world to give you a whole "feel" of that particular time. Rutgers Library's Special Collections has almost all of the football programs from any modern season. The music does not have to be Billboard's #1 hits. It should be stuff played and enjoyed by the students on campus from that era. The idea would be to celebrate with music and visuals and things particular to the Class and to Rutgers itself, if possible.

I would find it great if, say the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1961 from a couple of years ago, had a montage of photos taken around campus, or movies... especially if it captured what Rutgers looked like at the time.

It's more possible than ever before to do these things because you can reach out to so many alumni you need to canvas to find this stuff. But via email and such, it can be done. Good luck if you pursue it!

Points of reference regarding the horse: Lord Nelson died earlier this year:

I can't remember the name of the new mount, but it is obvious it has not been in loud settings before.
