1.) Maybe Mike Williams will contribute more than I thought (from watching him last year). With a PG like Corey, he'll get a LOT more open shots this year. I like it.

2.) Freeman is incredible to watch, despite being a bit undersized. When you only have one guy doing much up front, it's hard to open things up for him.

3.) I'd say Rutgers wins this game if they hit their FTs, but the same could be said about St. John's. They couldn't hit them either. Absolutely the most disappointing part of the game. I'll never in my life understand how decent basketball players can't hit a free throw to save their lives. I'm not in shape, nothing more than 6', and not much of a basketball player, but even I would get pissed if I had 10 FTs and couldn't make 7-8 of them. We couldn't even get near 50%! This will sting.

4.) Diallo couldn't be more lost right now. I'm hoping he eventually turns into a Hamady-light type of player. We're definitely missing that type of shot blocker on D.

5.) This team needs a scorer. They need a Douby. A Wooten. A Carter. Somebody who's not afraid to shoot and take some pressure off of Williams. They need somebody who's stone cold and not afraid of the pressure.

6.) Absolute screw job. Somebody needs to post the gif of those 4 seconds. Maybe I'd be able to let it go if it wasn't a continuous thing the entire game. St. John got almost every call. Yes, Rutgers should have still won. This isn't an excuse for not winning, but it's a damn true one in the sense that we should have been on the line shooting 2 (probably missing 2, but still) with a chance to pull ahead. These were some terrible refs.

7.) Laurent has a couple of flashes, but he's not there yet either. I wish we had enough depth that a guy like him could just redshirt his frosh year and develop some more game. I'd like to see a little more Dane Miller in his game, but it could come over time.

8.) I'm not much of a fan of the game that Daniels or Foreman play, so yeah, I'll try to be as nice as possible. Here's hoping those guys can get over their brain farts at some point this year. Daniels in particular was responsible for the big lead, and he was just as responsible for losing that lead.

9.) I actually liked some of the time outs Eddie had called when St. John's was making runs, but coming out of those time outs, I would have liked to see Goode in the game. These are the times you put him in ... when you don't have to worry about the D right away. But anyway, twice you saw Rutgers stop runs and bring the lead back up to double digits. Late in the game, they let it slip away, though. Eddie failed to make the right changes to hold them off, and the players didn't pick it up when they needed to.

10.) I'm not seeing the hate for Greg Lewis that some have here. He is what he is, but he's by far our best option at the 5 at this point in time.

11.) I liked the effort on D, but there are a LOT of little things, like playing straight up, that this team needs to get better at. I liked the pressure on the perimeter.

12.) While FT shooting is an obvious hole tonight, we also got severely outworked on the boards. Foreman, Freeman, and Lewis are rebounders. Why couldn't they do so tonight with regularity?

13.) We should have won. We should have won. We should have won. It may not make the difference in making the NIT vs. not making it, but still, we should have won.

14.) That being said, this team is so much better than last year's. It's not even close. The games may be heart breaking, but they're worth watching now.

Not sure Jordan was outcoached by Mullin, since it seemed like an assistant coach handled everything in the timeouts and Mullin just watched him.

That would be Asst Coach Barry Rohrssen from Kentucky. You watch how fast SJU rises from the ashes before EJ and RU.

Honestly I thought the game was lost in the last ten minutes when Daniels was running the point. He got cold and didn't distribute the ball. Throw in some turnovers and that sums up the game down the stretch

And who's fault is that?

Rock the RAC, simple question. What other sport does St.John's have? Invest money in soccer? All they have is bb.

And who's fault is that?

It's Eddie's fault. But trying to get more out of a guy who scored 20ish points in the first 30 minutes of the game and couldn't be stopped by SJU doesn't mean that he was outcoached by Mullin. It's a decision that made sense. I just wish he would have gone to a different lineup when he saw that things were changing.

My thoughts:

1. We had 1 play.....rush the ball up and whatever guard has the ball...drive to the basket....regardless of whether 4 defenders are around you. How many of these bone head shots did we take?

2. All we had to do late in the game is get the ball to Freeman inside....

3. Most disappointing was poor FT shooting by Sanders and by Daniels.

4. We had no input from the 5 hole...zero

5. Defensive interior game is non existent...we gave up dozens of offensive rebounds resulting in too many baskets

Gotta get Freeman many more touches. Team that played the first 25 minutes was pretty good. Get better, rebound better, move on, play 32 good minutes v. Creighton and beat them.

I like this team.

Especially 2, Freeman was playing so well.

It's on to Central Arkansas first. We can't overlook anyone.

I was at the game. We shot 5-14 on foul shots and got out rebounded by 11. Freeman hardly ever got the ball. We played well for 28-30 minutes and gave the game away in the last 10 minutes. It seemed as if we were rushing foul shots as well as often rushing the ball into the heart of their defense. Daniels played very well but in the last 10 minutes he was out of control quite often. Corey rushed things toward the basket too a few times and took a couple of rushed shots. The first half we seemed to be doing well on rebounding but in the second half Foreman got a cramp and not getting his rebounds or scoring seemed to hurt us.All 9 of his points were in the first half. I think the student section rattled Corey and Bishop. Corey was 1-6 and Bishop was 1-3 on foul shots. Those were killers.

not Kenny Walker, not Darrell Walker, and certainly not Trent Tucker. He played after these guys and hopefully is still very rich.

no...he isn't 6'10' and he is quicker THAN Smith....actually looking at some of his clips Foreman has no where near the body and the ups.

Foreman did get a cramp, but over the summer he should have been shooting a lot of free throws.

LJ is his size and Foreman has an explosive 1st step and is slippery. looking back at film I forgot how much hops LJ had. I had the Knicks days in my heads where he probably was on the decline.

We take bad shots. Lewis in particular. Too many instances last night where shots were in the air with 15+ seconds left on the shot clock and I'm saying to myself, "We can get a shot like that anytime we want"

I was trying to think of the best way to summarize this game, and I think you hit the nail on the head. While the ending was painful, they had my attention. It's been a LONG time since I watched an RU bball game from start to finish. In a weird way it was progress.

Was wondering where Sanders went. So Eddie went with the hot hand? If so, you are right, he should have changed back earlier when he saw things slipping away.

better than last year's team at the start of the season or the end? Because at one point last year Rutgers was 10-7 with wins over Wisconsin, Penn State, Clemson, and Vanderbilt. That wasn't too shabby considering some of the losses were to GW, Virginia, Seton Hall, Nebraska, and Northwestern. It was the 15 game tailspin at the end of the year that was really bad.

This game felt like a tale of two halves.

In the first half, I was really liking what I saw out of the team. We moved the ball well on offense and were tough on defense. We were frustrating the Johnnies and denying their scorers the ball. We were also making the extra pass for the open look, making great moves to get open shots near the rim, and finding the soft spots in the defense.... but the buckets just weren't falling. I thought we really outplayed them in the first half, even though the score was close - and then we finally started to see buckets fall late in the half and into the second half, I thought we would pull away.

And then it all started to fall flat. Sanders picked up 2 fouls just before halftime, but didn't get his third until the game was back within 5... so not sure why he wasn't a fixture on the court in the second half. The offense runs *much* better when he's in the game, and it started to tighten up with Daniels running the point looking for his own points as much or more as running the offense. There's actually no mention in the play-by-play of Sanders between the 13:43 min mark and the 4:28 mark (during which SJU cut the lead from 14 to 5).

The defense also started to lag a bit, and SJU started to find its shooters. I'd imagine this was because the defense scheme changed after so many fouls were picked up by our bigs? At the 14:05 mark, we were up 16 points when Lewis picked up his third foul. At that point, Lewis/Diallo both had 3, and Freeman/Foreman both had 2... we had picked up 6 fouls by our bigs in a span of 2:47 of game time (from 16:52 to 14:05 in the second half). At that point, the defense changed.... and a big didn't pick up another foul until 5:08, when Freeman got his 3rd. But by that point, the lead had dwindled to just 5.

So, during the key part of the game, our bigs got into foul trouble, the defense changed, and Sanders was not involved.... which is when the lead slipped away.

The two missed fouls in the open court at the end were just icing on that cake.

bot sure who was center...think Elmore Spencer was the year after and a dude named melvin love?

Moses Scurry on the team that won it all. George Ackles and Spencer on the team that threw the final game the next year to Duke.

agree with this, its only been 3 games so I don't think anyone can definititively draw that conclusion especially since there were some promising moments earlier last year. Its a different team that's for sure with different strengths but also different weaknesses

Hi Art. Hope you're doing well and fighting the good fight . My dad is living up in Boston with me and doing well. I'll send you an email letting you know when I'm back in town and maybe we can get together for dinner.
I saw the game Thursday night and have similar thoughts about Daniels. Good moves to the basket with limited or no outside shot. And the last few minutes he should have been pulled because he was forcing way too many shots. Rutgers has yet to find a "go-to" guy and I'm not sure one is on the roster. Freeman and Foreman need to get quality minutes together in crunch time , especially when Lewis was worse than bad as he was against St John's. That said , this team is much improved --it's no longer a two man offense like last year. Also , since when could we say that Rutgers lost to a major conference team yet clearly had the better talent. Last night was such night. Frankly how many times last year could we say that Rutgers won and had the better talent. I don't think too many times..
