GAME THREAD : RU @ Illinois, 8p, BTN +, FloHoops :

Can we loan 15 of tonight's points to the men's team for the game Saturday?

Great job, ladies! Way to take down an overmatched opponent!

Final RU wins 75-51

Arella the star w 21 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. She got 5:00 of rest too at end

T Baby w 10 pts and 8 rebounds

Singleton w 8 pts and 4 rebounds could be the new starting center. Once again Wallace and Davenport w poor ganes, 1 pt conbined. w 8 fouls .

Alexis Norris finally breaks thru w a basket. 1 for the season now.

Nebraska this Sunday won't be easy.

No, Nebraska won't be an easy out. I hope RU fans turn out in greater numbers than usual for this game.

Right now, RU is 3-0 on the road in league and 0-1 at home. A win on Sunday evens that out and also keeps us in second place in the B1G, where, at the moment, we are in a 4-way tie for second.

No one has mentioned Theresa Grentz in connection with Illinois. She built their program after leaving RU. I don't recall how long she was there but the program seems to have slipped back down quite a bit since she left.

But no one said anything about this. Just our 9 pt second quarter letdown is the focus of some. Our offense is fine. You can’t score 27 every quarter.

Illinois is bad, and I agree with folks that there was no reason we should have been outscored by them in the second quarter, or only been up by 10 at half-time. If we are going to make a play at B10 championship, the team can't have letdowns against anyone--it won't matter against Illinois, but it will against pretty much anyone else.

As bac noted above, I would assume CVS was not pleased at halftime, let the team know it, and they responded well. But this is about getting the team to the point where they are able to close out games.

Grentz left Rutgers when the Women join the ncaa. She had a couple of good years but never built a great program. When CVS became our coach there were a rival for a couple years.

Grentz was hired as head basketball coach by Illinois in 1995. Grentz retired following the 2006-07 season after 12 season with the Illini. She compiled a record of 210-156 at Illinois, including one Big Ten Championship (1997), two Sweet Sixteens and five NCAA Tournament appearances.

She led Rutgers to nine straight postseason appearances and a 434-150 (.743) record during her tenure (1976-1995) and won the 1982 AIAW National Championship.
Grentz guided the Lady Knights to a 30-3 record in 1986-87 to earn the Converse National Coach of the Year award. She also has been named the March of Dimes Coach of the Year (1990–91), the Metropolitan Women's Basketball Association Coach of the Year (1992–93) and the Newark Star Ledger Coach of the Year (1985–86). In addition, Grentz has twice been named the Kodak District II Coach of the Year and was honored four times as the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year

Thanks for the review. I was pretty familiar with her record at Rutgers and remember the great games at the RAC with St. Joe's, PSU, and ODU, among others. For awhile, the women were outdrawing the men and were sometimes the feature game in the old doubleheaders. Even students attended the games in great numbers back then. But after a few years at Illinois I kind of lost track of how she was doing. B1G women's bball wasn't that great back then, definitely not as good as the BE was, with RU, UConn, ND, and, later, Louisville all challenging for spots in the Elite 8 and Final Four.

Just to continue the Rutgers-Illinois connection, former Rutgers Assistant Coach Jolette Law left RU in 2007 and followed Theresa Grentz as coach of the Illini. She was relieved of her duties after the 2012 season compiling a 69-93 record.

Took three of her RU recruits with. One immediately and that stayed one more at RU and left iirc

GRENTZ TAKES DIP AT ILLINOIS - Hartford Courant (1997 article)

But she left Rutgers frustrated and unhappy. The administration didn't want to try new ideas or marketing strategies. As Olympic coach, Grentz had limited time to spend with her program and in the ever-increasing competitive atmosphere of women's college basketball, her team suffered. In 1994-95, her last season at the school, Rutgers (17-13) didn't win more than 20 games or qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 10 years.

When Illinois called, she was ready for a change.

"I don't mean any disrespect to Rutgers," she said. "I was in that situation for a long time, getting it done year in and year out. They didn't give me what I needed.

"I'm looking around and seeing what's going on at other places, like Connecticut. They play Tennessee. They build this rivalry. I'm saying, `Hello. That's marketing. That's promotion.' "

There is some truth to this. There is also a lot not said and a lot more to the story. Long time fans know far more than I do.

Understand Theresa wanted to be paid as well as the RU MBB HC (Wenzel) was and Grunninger wasn't going to do that.
That along with Rutgers refusing to fund the WBB program like Grentz felt it needed to be competitive made going to Illinois something she felt was better than being dragged down by Rutgers refusing to invest in the RU WBB program so it would be continue to be competitive against programs that were beginning to spend what it takes to make their WBB programs winners
