Game thread RU v MU

End of the first half was man to man....Rutgers pressure is not man pressure.. it's a zone press...try to keep up.....lol
.

I didn't see it, but whenever we try to put any pressure on the other team full court, we give up easy baskets.
Call it whatever you want.
We should always drop back and play half court D with maybe token pressure because we get beat too easily.
I am just going off of what other posters said when we gave up an apparent easy 2 at end of first half.

You saw it.
What happened?

Sorry I have no confidence in his jump shot. Lewis and him shooting the ball. Why do have to call him an ass?

I think you're missing my point. I agree with you! I don't like either of them, but today he was actually pretty good. The problem with Daniels is he's so inconsistent. Lewis? He's just bad and with his bad knees, it makes him even less effective than he already is.

Definitely one of Daniels' better games this season..much more composed, hope we see more of this in the future. I know he's missed some clutch shots, but I like Williams a lot. Probably hustles more than anyone on the team, and made some big plays on D. I remember reading he had some confidence issues on the court...I wonder if some of his shooting struggles are still mental? We probably win this game w/ a healthy Freeman, but gotta give credit to Monmouth too, they are a good team this year.

Why regarding Choppin? Because he's incapable of any objectivity and even the slightest and factually correct criticism of a player brings this guy out. He's now I'm my ignore because he's incapable of having a decent debate without putting other members down. He reminds me of the hit and run poster Yeah Baby, who pulls that same garbage on the Football thread.

I agree with much of your post especially Williams. It's all mental. And one would think after a year plus here, these moments would not adversely affect him like it does. Hustling is one thing. Knocking down shots is another.

I don't think that's true...the zone pressure has resulted in some turnovers this year....At least 3 today. AND, yes, they just about always drop back to zone. It's used in spurts, not 40 minutes of pressure.

I could be wrong, but, I believe the zone pressure has been pretty good this year...eating clock and forcing some turnovers. We have not seen the "beat too easily" you refer to.

Should I say I'm sorry Mrs. Wiliams? Or are you EJ's campaign manager? What an ass you are.

If personally attacking players on a message board who are playing hard is your thing...go for it. Let me guess....you pay $10 a month so you can say anything you want.....lol

I think the Board Moderator said personally attacking individual players is against the rules....guess they don't apply to you.

He is trying, he missed some shots. He is also working hard and trying his best.

Williams made two threes in first half, and unfortunately for him missed at end.

just got home. They team gave a MUCH better effort today that I never expected. They played hard under difficult situation. Give credit for that. Couple of misc replies..

Williams...seems to start off hot but I think he loses his legs 2nd half from effort. Needs a rest. But he was plying the 3 and 4 today... I like his hustle. Rooting for him.

I did not at all get going away from the Zone. We had them confused and they couldn't hit from outside. At the same time we were going Princeton back door on them 2x and moving on offense. We come out of that 2min TO and go back to M2M and chucking from the outside under a bit of panic. I did NOT get this move at all..

Williams misses FT #2 and Lewis misses his 12 footer..ball game. Knew it right there.

Big guy has the worst hands. And I don't know why is he picking up a foul at the 3pt line 2mins into a game where we have nobody behind him? Why do we have our bigs always go out and defend when we need them under the basket. ?

I would really have liked to see this game with Freeman and Shaq playing.

And what happened to Goode. Got lost on the bench after a decent play in the 1st half.

The team gave us something to root for today. For a while it was kinda like the Old RAC again. Good job not letting the Monmouth fans take the place over. I know it is a loss but they played BBall today.

LOL at "hit and run" poster....That's you....come in to criticize individual players after a game and then disappears....that's internet muscles.

I don't post anything on this board about a player that I would not say to them face to face.....try it.

We lost this game under the boards on put backs by Monmouth. They had to have outscored us 3-1 underneath.
Rutgers lost the game in the second half when there was another long period without a basket which allowed Monmouth to get a double digit lead. Rutgers came back strong down the stretch to tie the score but allowed Monmouth to get a put back basket to take the lead with less than a minute to go.
Monmouth offensive game is dual purpose,ie, dribble drive to the basket and make 3 pointers.Their 3 point shooting was abysmal but they scored far too many fast break baskets and easy shots around the basket.

The Rutgers crowd was in the game which I am sure helped the team in the second half.It was a entertaining college game to watch in person.

Agree, the zone was working during the 2nd half comeback...then we went man. I think that was a mistake, but, I also think it was to guard against an open 3 point look with the game tied..

Goode made a 3 in the first half, but, he had two bad turnovers on passes right to Monmouth defenders that had me scratching my head....he was pulled shortly after that and did not play again.

Ohio....Blaming long rebounds? Don't do that.

On a seperate note....Mike Williams is our best player. Others have more ability, however he is our best and 2nd is far behind. Ask Justin Robinson.

I went to the game today and it was the first time I've watched them this season.

Williams might very well be the best player, but he is badly out of shape. Not sure if that is a topic of conversation here at all, but it's telling.

The press is a zone press--poorly executed.

I saw one bad one today... Laurent getting beat down court that led to the Alley op dunk. I saw two where Sanders went for a few steals that led to uncontested layups.. I'm just curious how many fast break points they had....is it in Kenpom......lol

the problem I saw on defense was interior.... could not play aggressive due to depth and foul concerns.

In the words of Clyde Frazier, we play with no cohesion. Our guys look like they met on the bus ride over to the gym.

On the other hand, Monmouth looks like a team with senior leadership. Everybody plays a roll. 10 deep with interchangeable parts. And they killed us on the baseline.

All that said, the game was there for the taking.

We're just not well coached.

Mike Williams - "best player". That's a pretty nasty indictment of the state of EJ's recruiting classes. 5-15 from the floor. 2-8 from the 3. Misses a 3 in crunch time again. How can a kid put on weight during a D1 basketball season. Goode should not play a meaningful minute during a B1G game. He may be a swell kid and a hard worker. But he looks like he's driving 25 in the passing lane of the Turnpike.

I don't pay attention to things like that....is he really gaining weight? Noticeably?

Post game stats..Monmouth something like 4 for 18 from three but 42 points in the paint. Them making a three end game was the last of my concerns...

their threes seem to come in transition too, not the spot up type you see from kick outs. either way..I would have stuck with the one thing that was working at the time. it also helped with keeping our guys from burning themselves out there.

same old song & dance

yep, another tough one to take

Ohio -- I only notice it because he looks so damn tired about 5 minutes in the second half and then has no lift down the stretch. Ow well, blame it on the late night snacks while he was studying for finals.

As I said, I have't watched them play at all thus far this year, but Williams looks "soft" to me. Not soft as in not tough, but soft as in a little "pillowy" around the middle.

And I would agree that several of his 2nd half threes were on line but clipped the front of the rim. Classic tired legs.

I contrast him against the wing Jones from Monmouth. Physically, that kid looks like he should be playing for the Knicks. He's long, explosive, has good bounce and has a man's upper body. He had 12 points, 9 boards, 2 blocks and only committed 1 foul. That's a boss stat line for a team that plays 9/10 guys.

agree...I know that Williams plays hard but a lot of people have a love affair with him but I don't see it. He hasn't delivered and its almost midway through his sophomore season and his shooting percentage is pretty awful. I agree fully about the conditioning but that's been a common theme with the basketball program for years.

My oldest son loves basketball, so I anticipate being around the RAC more going forward. But fundamentally, this team is a f@cking nightmare...lol.

I need to get a pack of Tums.

Fools gold today...best FT shooting team goes 7-14, good 3 pt team shoots 4-18. Still beats us.

Impressed with comeback, but MU got the lead SOLELY by beating us down the court. Disgusting!

With 5 fouls with 13 secs left he subs in Batie. MU gets a layup with us having 1 to give. WTF?

We got Monmouths C game and lost.

agree...I felt all week that RU would compete in this game and wouldn't be shocked if they pulled out a win. Remember Monmouth was the hunted in this game not the hunter, not used to handling the favorite role against a power 5 school. It got to them early with their sluggish start, give credit to RU because it looked ugly when the lead ballooned to 13 and Monmouth clearly was getting rattled playing with the lead slipping away and it got worse when the RU crowd started...but Monmouth kept their compsure when it counted getting layups and putbacks. A game RU should have been able to pull out given the late momentum and playing at home but simply not having the players to do it.

Two glaring issues. The team doesn't play as a team. Today was better than other games I have seen, but that is on the coaches.

Strength and conditioning, mainly conditioning, needs to be addressed in a big way. Teams in the NBA don't really do that stuff, it is mostly individual. I keep saying I would love to see one of our practices. I'm guessing they are very different most other college teams. Our team across the board doesn't look lean. Chubby and carrying too much weight many of them are.

That said, today was probably the best game they have played, and they lost to Monmouth. Pretty telling sadly.

oh you mean like not being able to catch or dribble the ball cleanly...yeah a lot of that in first halves, they seemed to get better at it in the 2nd half but they don't seem ready to play either

I haven't seen enough to comment and in their defense, they only had 8 guys. Monmouth played 10 and all 10 played substantial minutes.

Setting that aside, I agree that some of our guys don't look basketball player lean.

And totally agree that they don't play as a team. That was obvious from the first possession. They looked like they met at the gym on College Ave and convinced each other to go play a varsity basketball game at 1. lol

Yeah that was the first thing I noticed. Not many clean catches on our first dozen or so possessions. Lots of fumbled dribbles by everyone not named Sanders too.

And how does Sanders not get called for a carry every time down the floor? King Rice was losing his shit over them not calling it.

Been saying that for two years Hud.

I often don't even know what they are trying to do on O, and the defensive breakdowns on D are very common, usually do to non communication and ole defense. Daniels had one of his best games today, but still frustrating on D. He is athletic enough to stay in front of anyone but constantly gets beat creating dump off stations for the other teams bigs or kick outs for threes. I'm guessing he just didn't have or take to coaching as a youngster. His positioning from the start is horrible. With his athleticism, he should be a lock down defender.

And I thought Monmouth got away with several travels.

Totally agree

The refs didn't have a great game.

Lewis had a great recovery block in transition in the first half that hit every part of the Monmouth shooter before going out of bounds and none of the three of the refs were in position to see it. They all told Eddie, "Sorry Eddie, I didn't see it." lol. Monmouth scored on the inbounds play. That ends up being a huge extra possession in the grand scheme of things.
