Game thread RU vs Maryland 02/9/20

where was I...we beat awful team, it meant nothing, thats why i wasnt there because I knew the level of play would get exposed when we play the real teams in this league. This today tells you where the program is on the national scene. Its a good Maryland but its not a vintage Maryland team and they are easily running the doors off of RU. The so called vaunted defense gave up 44. This program is good enough to beat bad teams but cannot compete with any top 25 team and that has been proven for the past few years...go find the record of cvs vs top 25 programs of late, its frighteningly bad

maybe I hold the program to standards because CVS had a great program going in the 00's but its clearly slipped. The article you posted was quite telling. CVS isnt really coaching this team anymore and that is an issue going forward. She is more a figurehead. Its time to figure out where we want the program to go going forward.
It's clear you are good fan, but you have a tendency to get dragged down in the moment of a bad loss. I agree that it appears Coach Stringer is not as active in coaching the team as in years past. But given her entire body of work and stature in the profession of coaches, it is not an easy thing to give her the boot.

And have you seen what Maryland has done to other B1G teams? Beat a ranked Michigan @ Michigan by 28 points. Beat a not so great MSU team by 41 points. Beat Ohio State by 20 points.

I had to turn it off at the end of the 2nd quarter after watching Rutgers pass the ball around the perimeter five straight possessions and then shoot the ball from the outside with seconds remaining on the clock and score no points. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that is C. Viv's illustrious idea of an offense. If we had any kind of real offense we would actually be able to compete with the likes of Maryland.

I know Maryland is good and nothing today surprises me, the writing is on the wall with how this team will play against the better teams in league and games like Minny and some struggles earlier in the year against average competition. I am past the point of thinking that CVS can build this program back into national relevancy. Some of you are okay with just being middling..that is fine, that is your opinion. I see the bench, obviously CVS health has effected everything, she is not getting up and doing the coaching, its Eatmann so I wonder what is the end game here, you would think CVS like Cheney would see the writing on the wall but thats not happening. What I see here is that Hobbs will allow CVS to remain on the bench as long as she wants even if she is not coaching. He said as much. I wonder long term if that is good for the health of the program. Look CVS is a hall of fame coach, no one can take that away and she brought some incredible memories here but sometimes you have to realize when the gig is up, its been coming for a decade now, its not like this is something new.

My prediction was MD by 25 which it is now but might be a little low. They are just so much better

Rutgers is down 3 good players against a good team, looks like a loss.
Sadly there is more traffic on this board when the team is losing and maybe one that likes to complain can start a complaint thread like I do congratulation threads.

Again my message isn't for those that show up, win or lose, but those who show up mostly when the team is doing bad.
You might be fans, but look for ways to put the team down more than enjoy wins with the rest of the RUWBB fan base.

No, I hear him just fine. He's a clanging gong, but he does make some very good points. Not an easy move for Hobbs and Rutgers to make to show her the door.

Hobbs is in the same situation that Tim was in and the same situation that Julie was in. Both of them tried to push it off, Julie actually had a decent incentive contract but worked to cut the salary. Hobbs ended up increasing the salary why I dont know. Its clear that CVS is an athletic directors nightmare for a program that probably loses alot of money given how much has to be spent on salary giving poor declining attendance

for example I would assume that other programs have more outreach with their coaching staff to the community or radio show, media appearances, CVS had that earlier here at RU and it seems like that went away. Is RU womens hoops proactive in trying to get support. I would think a younger more energetic coach would be able to cultivate a fanbase whether it be through appearance or social media.

arent we always down 3 good players, that seems to be a typical refrain almost every season..go back and think about it, this team is either young, injured, or lacking scholorship player. Constant turnover and players disappearing is happening almost every season here

Sorry, but I just don't believe that the talent gap between us and Maryland is anywhere near this large. We have a lot of good players and have had a number of good recruiting years.

Jordan fouls out. AWFUL game in every way, not that she was the only issue. The one thing that does annoy me is that THE brenda has 8 bodies on the bench, what do we have? Need to carry a larger bench.

Coach Stringer and staff have endured great difficulty incorporating the 3 point shot and the shot clock into how Rutgers plays offense.Too many shot clock violations and too few 3 pointers are the end result.Changes need to be made.

Is there another site for Women's Basketball recruiting rankings other than ESPN?
The last 4 years--RU's recruiting has not been ranked in the top 25, and Maryland in top 5 every year except one. Maybe that explains the result today against Maryland?

2019
Rutgers Not ranked
Maryland 3

2018
Rutgers Not ranked
Maryland 5

2017
Both Not Ranked

2016
Maryland 1

Rutgers not ranked

and that would be very telling

do you know that RU has a top 30 player in Braughton, and Davenport was the #1 incoming center in the country. This isnt even about Maryland, its about the program as a whole, performances vs Mich St and Minny and not being able to compete with any top 25 schools for the past 5 years.

One of my main issues with the BRENDA now, and forever besides her well known recruitment violations is that she, and her players play dirty ball. Evidenced by that filthy, unecessary poke to Maori's eye when you are up 25 pts with a minute to play.

This is why we never get any respect from the rankings and seedings people, no matter our record. Every time we come up against a ranked team we get rolled over. We build up against the Penn States and blown out by anyone in or near the top 25.

Amazing that in the first year that CViv has a dedicated practice facility, like every other school has had for decades, she recruits the #1 class in the B1G

as if that means anything, CVS has recruited top players in the past including a fab 5 bust, she as a top 10 player #1 center plus another top 25 player on the team now

I hope the practice facility can coach a 2020 type offense.

But, they still play in a 40 yr old brutally ugly place, like the RAC, don't you think they choose to go elsewhere because of that as well.

This team is frustratingly mediocre. CVIV needs to be relieved of here duties at the end of the season without question. Obviously it’s not easy to do but it’s what needs to be done. It’s now more evident than ever that the college game has passed her by.

LOL, only thing very evident in this thread is people you never, ever see here come over after a loss. I'm on here good, or bad. You have your account since 2003, and only have posted 242 in total. "The game has passed her by." Come up with a new, or creative remark, please.

My main complaint about some posters is that they seem to enjoy sprouting their negativity after a loss but infrequently appear after a win.
I enjoy the critiques from those who show up just about every game and can understand why they feel it might be time for a change, even though team is winning.
They feel the program should be elite like it was years ago and maybe a younger HC could return the program to glory as it seems CVS' coaching is stuck in the past when the D could make a program elite without a good offense to back the D up.
That is something I think about a lot.

Then there are those who will praise after a win, but don't expect them to show up after every one of them or during the game thread.
When the team is losing, expect them to
jump in game threads and just about every thread on this WBB Board that day.
Good points are made by them, but their agenda has been clear for years, and they use every chance to push it.
That said, they do have some good points, but their long time agenda sometimes makes me thing thwey are more happy after a loss so they can bash Stringer than after a win when complements are considered a nice way to celebrate.
But the beat cupcake type of complement is usually what can be expected because they really didn't enjoy the win.

That's another thing I think about along with how long Vivian will be HC and if Hobbs will go for the best available to replace her, or someone that will coach for less so the FB and MBB programs can get more.

Stringer has had to fight for every cent over the years, just like Schiano had to before he left the first time and refused to come back unless funding was there or planed in future.
I'm hoping whoever replaces CVS won't have to do the same or is willing to fight for the RU WBB program to get what it needs to return to elite status.

Not sure who you're talking about. Who's the top ten player? Again, Aliyah Boston for South Carolina was the top post(3rd ranked player). Maori was 2nd ranked Center(16th ranked player) behind her. If you've watched them both from day 1, you would agree.
Yes, Zippy was #23 ranked player. Do you realize, Maryland has the 7th, 17th, 32nd, and 80something ranked players from the same class. Also, the #4 ranked player in the 2018 class in Shakira Austin to go with Taylor Mikesell and another young lady at Owens at 33 & 34.
If you say that's an equal share of talent, then you're not being honest with yourself.
Also, btw, Arella was the 100th ranked player in her class. Of course, she is Number 1 in my book.

Maryland has 3 highly rated New Jersey players on its roster. Rutgers WBB has only one New Jersey player.
What happened, did these players get recruited by RU?

It is called player development that is lacking.
I have often been frustrated with the slow development of some of the post players that have come in highly recruited...Chelsey Lee, R. Hollivay, Victoria Harris, and currently, Jordan W and Tyia S (not counting Maori because she is 1st year). ....I also, have eased up on putting the bulk of the blame on the coaches. If we are fair, we would have to acknowledge that this same thing occurs with other top programs. Some posts come ready and only need tweeking, while others need to learn the game. Tyia and Maori are often lost on the floor and responsible for many costly mistakes(Tyia @ Minn).
On the flip, Kia V. Monique Oliver, Stashia Carey came with something to work with and were a joy to watch.
Look at Shakira Austin, who was a #4 ranked player out of high school and Conn's Nelson-Agoda right behind her at #5. They have taken a while to arrive on the scene. Both are in year 2 and just recently showing flashes of what is expected of them. Both still with plenty of work to do. If a coach had a choice, for a game to be played today, out of them and the Frosh, Aliyah Boston, they would probably pick the Frosh. Also, remember, Kiah Stokes always in Geno's doghouse first two years at UConn. Never really developed offensively.
*** I think our frustrations come from us not having enough true ballers. These top teams have a roster of top players. The Elites are getting the ballers. One example that comes to mind, Rickea Jackson, who we whiffed on in recruiting.
