Football GAME THREAD: Rutgers vs. Illinois

The so-called Final Drive showed only a few clips with no mention of Wimsatt’s key play or Vedral getting knocked out but coming back HUGELY.

Are we sure we are in this conference?

Even Maryland got a bit of discussion after their highlights.

Really bad announcers. They weren’t annoying, as some are. But the whole game it was just yapping about player stats and anecdotes. No talking about the game itself. Not until the failed 4th down conversion on the Illini final drive did it even occur to them that there was a game on the line, and that drive was kinda important. They made it boring.

That color guy had obviously done some film study before the game, and his commentary was usually on target. If he's bad what do you think of Mr. Cocknose and his game preparation?

On a day when unbeaten Michigan is playing unbeaten
Michigan State in a game with multiple highlight plays
AND another game with national implications has Ohio State playing Penn State
you expect 0-4 Rutgers to get more than a passing mention?

Certainly. Actually pointing out crucial personnel elements of the win (that fill all of their other game reviews) would take up the same amount of time. Instead, they described what everyone was seeing anyway or were just silent.

Actually there was not even a passing mention. Highlights followed by zero commentary. Even Maryland got 60 seconds.

in all fairness to cole.....it was the first time he had reps in a big ten game.....maybe he had the yips....i know i'm making an excuse for his play...but,.a few series is a small sample to see if he has what it takes....just saying.
Cole did a couple good things, especially the one roll-out in which he wound up turning nothing into a first down. He threw two really awful throws, one a bad decision and weak throw that should’ve been a pick six, the other an inaccurate pass for a completion that easily could’ve been a pick six. That’s the sort of stuff Vedral rarely does.

We’re not a team built to win shootouts against Big Ten teams. So protecting the ball is clearly a priority for the coaching staff.

I saw nothing that challenged the coaching staff’s choice of starting QB. And Vedral, when we’re not missing key blocks on every play, can be a difference maker. Just not a difference maker with a great arm.

Wimsatt OTOH, did a very nice job considering he was thrown into the deep end on his first play for RU. Much too soon to celebrate his greatness- one play isn’t nearly enough to extrapolate from. But that one play will have helped boost Wimsatt’s confidence, and that’s no small thing for a young QB.
