Gio the Dual Threat QB

Gio played at a very low level of competition and only started one yr in HS. Very raw and gets very few reps in practice. That's a tough uphill climb.

I don't understand. If the two guys above are correct then you just made this up. Why would you do that? Either you had no idea of what the competition he faced was and just decided to say it was very low to sound like you knew what you were talking about or just decided to lie for the fun of it. This happens constantly here. I just don't get the mentality of trying to sound informed on a message board when your not when you know someone will know the truth.

It's the general disposition of some posters. It's tiresome to see them taking backhanded swipes at our players with nothing to back it up with.

The easy answer is because he is an asshole. An exposed one at that. Should have been banned a long time ago.

Schiano's issue was not how he handled QBs but rather his inability to recruit the position. He pretty much never had more than 1 QB on the roster that was beyond serviceable. Flood actually did a decent job of recruiting QBs and then proceeded to forget he had any other QBs on the roster once he named a starter. I am cautiously optimistic that Ash will be able to recruit, develop and let QBs compete. If so we should be much better at the position than we had been under either Schiano or Flood.

Bled ,He is a D coach just like Schiano was. If the O guys he brought in are as competent as he seems to be then we should be ok. Outside of Ray Lucas we have never put a guy in the pros. For this program to train one onto a Sunday guy or even a good Saturday guy would be a real treat and a novelty. Hope springs eternal.

Great scot! Omigod! Is that his mom or his girlfriend? Dayum!

Do I sense an oedipal vibe in that photo? A psychologist would have a field day with that photo. Or maybe with my reaction to that photo. One of those things, anyway.

If James Franklin picked starting QBs based on mom's, we know who would be the starter if Gio was on the team.

Call me a nut, but I really do think Gio has a legit shot at winning the starting job. The dude can run AND throw.
You're basing he can throw off of 1 highlight two years ago vs a level of HS football equivalent to the Little Giants.

I'll hold my opinion until spring but nothing showed me he's ready to start simply based off his time at Rutgers.

Gio might have a much better chance of playing time if he switches to TE.
We have a need at that position as well.

You are 100% correct: posters here CONSTANTLY make shit up. It's simply amazing and, most of them, don't bother responding when "called out" as to the nonsense they're spewed. Opinions are one thing but facts, FACTS, can always be backed-up so do a little research, right??!!!

Ash said everything is wide opened and I believe him. Apparently the QB's do as well or at least one of them would have jumped ship by now so let's just see how it shakes out.

I fully expect at least 1 QB to "jump ship" following the spring and, quite honestly, there's no reason to do that before then once a coaching change is made.

I'd bet a glass of 21 year old Scotch.

I couldn't care less who the QB turns out to be (although it's interesting and exciting to discuss). I'll be perfectly happy with whoever the coaching staff chooses. Because it's really not rocket science who starts at QB.

But logically speaking, Laviano has the best shot at it. He runs well, he had pretty good situational awareness for a first year starter (yes, even with the 4th down spike), did a good job of recognizing the defense, did a very good job of understanding the offense. His major weakness is that he doesn't have the kind of amazing arm that pro QB's have to have. But I've also observed him throw the crap out of the ball, so his arm is good enough for the college game.

Which is why he played. He was the best at all those other things and had a good enough arm. All the bullshit people like to make up about why Flood chose him as QB over Rettig is just that: logically unsupportable bullshit. Flood was coaching for his job. As was his staff. They were going to put whoever the best option was in at QB. And they did.

Flood's weakness, in terms of QB play, wasn't in identifying the best option. It was inflexibility about yanking the starter to give the backup a chance when the starter was sucking it up. And there was nobody to coach up the QB either. Fridge showed what a good coach can do for a QB, developmentally. We really didn't have that before Fridge and certainly not after him.

So yeah, the competition will be wide open (again). But I think Laviano is most likely to get the starter spot. Can he hold it once he gets it? That I wouldn't bet on.
Didn't Flood keep saying his job is safe?

Seems logical as they all came in to play in a pro set.
and it may not be the least physically talented QB but the one who has trouble with quick reads and slow to make adjustments be it throw, pitch, or run. I have my candidate of choice, who best fits this bill!

Nuts, my point is simply that Ash convinced them it would be wide open and they have as good a shot as any other QB. If any of them thought there was still a pecking order and that they were on the bottom they may have wanted to leave and get a better shot elsewhere.

I like Gio. I remember ESPN made him a 4 star after watching his hs film. If we want to truly go dual threat he's the guy.

Mike McMahon was in the NFL for like 5 seasons, and started some games for the Lions. The Lions actually traded up to draft him.

WRONG. He played at the HIGHEST LEVEL of Michigan high school football in one of its toughest conferences.
Cripes!
I did not intend to overlook his throwing, which did not look superlative, but did not look bad either. I was impressed with his RUNNING ability. He ran over and through tacklers and made some nice cuts. I have not seen a Rutgers QB run like this since Ray Lucas (or Mo Sanu).

LOL relax I was responding to the part of Chip's comment referring to the level of competition Gio played against in high school!

I'm 150% with you. The cripes is for the people taking backhanded swipes at our players with NOTHING to back it up. WTF is wrong with some of our fans? The point of the thread was to highlight Gio's running ability. His throwing looks serviceable to decent. I could not find any film on any of the other QBs on staff who demonstrated an ability to run regularly like this. Laviano is quite mobile. In fact, IIRC, his first play in 2014 was a 46 yard run against Nebraska. Rettig made a nice move and run in his first drive against Norfolk state. Unfortunately, we never really saw him again in action.

Really looking forward to see how it all shakes out, but it would not surprise me if Gio moves up.

I can add this to the thought and debate. Was chatting with a former RU QB post Detroit bowl game last year at the Team Hotel. Asked him about Rettig v. Laviano....funny thing was he mentioned how much he liked Gio.
