Let's say Al Golden is a smart guy, and yes, he is - he is not Karl Childers of SLINGBLADE. He also has had credibility - in varying degrees.

BUT - he has just been through a hellish, hideous, enormously high profile humiliation that makes him very damaged goods in the eyes of an enormous portion of those who are in, or follow college football. Right now, figuratively, there are giant flashing signs surrounding Golden (and have been some real ones flying overhead) saying that this guy is NOT a good choice ... this is so painfully obvious that in virtually any situation - hiring Golden now & having him fail - is a guaranteed 'lose your job scenario' ... and automatic "what the Hell were you thinking?"

Golden needs a friend - or friends & his agent - - to sit him down & say:
"Al ... take some deep breaths, clear your head, you are dinged up right now ... Right now you are viewed - right or wrong - as the author of an epic ugly fail. So ... take a bit of time, let the dust settle - - re-calibrate yourself ... re-establish the fundamentals of how you operate a winning program - get that re-set in your head ... then rebuild your image - re-introduce yourself to the college football world - maybe you should be a talking head on TV for a year or two - show the world that you are articulate, that you are human, that you are insightful.... rebuild the respect for your knowledge & your genuineness - people will give you another shot - but you really need to give people some reasons - reasons to get excited about you... reasons to believe in you."

At this point - my sense is that Golden is not destined for RU - should have happened by now if it was.

Disagree that it would have happened now if it was going to happen. The smart move is to examine all of your options and then make an informed decision.

Who knows if Golden is being interviewed, has interviewed, heck, we don't even know who is on the list, it's all conjecture at this point. What I think has happened is a criteria was probably set by the 4 man search committee on the criteria for the new coach, my guess is the following:

- Budget - How much do they want to spend for the new coach, I'm guessing the budget is probably $2.5 - $3.0M/ 5 year deal, so $12-$15M for head coach. This takes Mullen off the list because we are probably looking at $25-$30M just for Mullen, Hobbs did say money was no issue but spending almost $15M more, I don't think they are going there. Also what is the budget for assistant coaches & staff, say another $2M-$4M, so that gives you a budget of $4.5M-$7M.

Experience - Is it a requirement that a candidate have previous HC experience or coordinator from a winning program suffice?

Recruiter - It's all about recruiting, does this person have good relationships and shown an ability to recruit top talent

Attract Top Assistant Coaches - Can this person fill the staff with competent people and do this quickly?

Character - What's the character of this person? Is he hard working, trustworthy, family man, respected in the community,......?

Passion/Hunger - Does the guy come across with passion and is he hungry?

These are some of the things I would be looking for in my new coach. Based on above, to me there are just 2 realistic candidates out there and Al Golden isn't one of them. It's either you take a chance on Ash and hope some of Urban Meyer rubbed off on him. You go with Mario, previous HC experience, good recruiter, knows the area, hope Saban rubbed off on him.

Yes- time that it is taking is kind of compatible with a Mario Scenario - he can't act while in the Championship process (but Kirby Smart clouds this thinking)
- and conceivably there still is the remotest of remote possibilities that Ohio State could fly through the eye of a needle to get to the Championship process.... so maybe that impacts Ash.
