Was he (gently) nudged out when the opportunity arose at Texas?
Was there friction between Mehringer/Ash?
How did the players view Mehringer?

It's definitely win/win.

Rutgers gets a course correction and DM gets "peace with honor".

I think the reaction of many when DM left was naivety that he was more important to the program than reality. The reality after seeing Ash hire Kill is that Ash is a respected up and coming coach who established veterans have no issues partnering with. None of our coaches are really indispensable.

At this point I have my opinions about what happened with Ash and DM and they really haven't wavered. The fact that there is still no real announcement out of Texas and the first words out of Ash's mouth were that he was looking for experiance seem to support my view.

I think it's a win-win and getting mired in the details don't matter at this point.

That said, I thought Ash's comments about Kill having been there and that he's not chasing the next thing when the going gets tough, etc was a direct shot at DM. He said he got that it was college football, etc, etc -- but I thought that it made clear this wasn't a straightforward forceout, at least.

No one will ever know the deal, but the way I see it:

1. Mehringer was not too successful here in year 1
2. Ash didn't fire him, and if Mehringer wanted to come back, he seemingly would still be a coach here
3. Ash, Mehringer and Herman are all professionally close
4. The way it worked out was in everyone's best interest, and I am sure they all feel that way

So they found a solution. If Mehringer fought it and tried to stay, I am sure he would still be here. I don't think Ash would have canned him. That would have been a big risk for him career wise, and one that he apparently saw no sense in taking. He realized it wasn't working so he left. Good for all of us. I could see where Ash might be annoyed if he was willing to take a chance and keep going and Mehringer wasn't, but I am sure he will get over it quickly.

My question is IF this was all about DM going to be with his super close pal IN Texas then why didn't he go to Houston with him prior..(I think Houston is part of Texas, right?)

Just feels like water found its own level and all's good with that here...Ash just made some chicken salad.

What? They formally announced the hiring with a long release:

Enough of the Mehringer bashing people. He didn't decide to not play Hicks & Martin which would've made a difference. He also didn't decided to not play others. Let it go already & move on.

Um... He was the WR coach at Houston.

.

Looks like 1984 trying to send out fake news to fit his anti ash agenda. Never gets old with this guy.

1. Not nudged out.
2. Could have stayed, no issues.
3. Many plsyers were upset he left, not just because they liked him, but because they wanted continuity. Those kids will adjust, and most will undoubtedly like Kill, who is a players coach.

No need to look too far into this. Rutgers will lose assistants, as do all programs. For Mehringer, he was in over his head, he knew it, and he found a place where he could save face, continue his career, and be part of a top (perceived) program. He made the choice that he felt was best for him.

well that was stupid of me , huh. I didn't even realize that. but that doesn't really change the thought. If he really just wanted to be in Texas with Herman then why didn't he just stay there.

dude you're a moron. I have zero anti ash agenda and hope for god's sake he achieves. In fact the point I was making is that Ash may have helped DM out and turned a negative into a positive. yep, a stupid miss on the past connections..but your response is idiotic.

yes, I think this nails it.

I still believe that down the road Mehringer will be a fine OC and one day a good head coach.

That being said, for us at this time and place, Kill is the better man for the job.

Landing the 4* star hoops recruit, the hoops team record, Hobbs, the new practice facility and a solid football recruiting class all point to a very different experience for RU fans over the next few years.

This one post made my annual subscription worth it, right there

If it was obvious he was in over his head, why wouldn't he be nudged out? I guess in the end it doesn't matter, seems like a win-win to me.

I think Mehringer had some doubts that he would improve the O in his 2nd year, and smartly decided to take the new fresh start with him mentor, so he wouldn't face the chance of having 2 very dismal years on his young resume.

Thank you John (however, I'm quite sure, some will continue to claim he misused literally every player on that side of the ball....).

My suspicion is that he wasn't nudged out, but that Ash didn't try and block the door either. 'So Drew, you are thinking of joining Herman at Texas...huh...if you think it is best, maybe you should go'.

I've heard several times there was friction between him and Blaze. And we all saw on game day how those plans came together.

Andy Reid.
Jon Gruden.
Steve Spurrier.
Chip Kelly.

Some of the finest offensive minds of our generation.

Even these guys cannot scheme around subpar talent forever.

Reid needed a peaking McNabb and megastar T.O. to break through.
Gruden needed an all-time, hall-of-fame caliber defense.
Spurrier got laughed out of the NFL for thinking his scheme could overcome having Shane Matthews &
Danny Wuerffel under center.
And Chip Kelly is now realizing that while his scheme may be sound, you need real talent like Vick, McCoy, DeSean, & Maclin to go out there and execute it.

This part we now is not true. Mehringer's admitted during the press conference after the Iowa game that it was Gio was pushed on him by Ash based on how he looked on the scout team. DM admitted that he was never really considering Gio. He was was more than willing to continue on with Laviano and the Freshman. Based on that, it is probably fair to speculate that the RB decisions could have been made by DM or DM and Kur.

The other interview that he did were someone asked him about whether he looked at any prior year tape on the players to see what they did well was pretty damning IMHO also.. He responded that no he did not watch prior year film and he did not care what they did in the past. That response shows shows arrogance and ineptitude to me.

Nah. Ash decided not to play Hicks & Martin, among others, but nice try.

Again, you don't know either. It's speculation, but I find it hard to believe that the OC does not get to play the guys that he believes give him the best chance. Ash was not an offensive guy. We are both speculating here, but nice try pretending that you know for certain.

The headcoach ultimately decides who plays.

Nah. He made the decisions. I'm not speculating.

This. Do people really think that the HC doesn't make personnel decisions? Could you imagine Kiffin telling Saban that so & so isn't playing. How about any other coaches in America? Silly

Here we go again:

- Martin was injured up until the week of the PSU game
- Hicks couldn't pass block. Plain and simple.
Wrong. Quit while you're ahead. I'm not going to post any further details but others have posted some.

Okay so Ash lied, in the presser following the PSU game, about Martin's injury. And, well, everybody lied about Hicks ineptness at pass-blocking, as well. You're right.
