Greg will make us beg for better bowl berths . His second stint will be eerily similar to the first one. We will eventually become a perennial 5-7 win team with bowl games, with maybe an awesome 9-10 win season in there, but eventually the fanbase will start wanting more . Similar to the way we were not happy with the weed eat bowl in 2009 and getting Pinstinked in 2011. I don’t think the Hobbs rose bowl dream will come true.
But where we are now I will sign up for this future with schiano. We are rutgers after all, not a stellar program. He will restore pride and get us victories . The program will be alive again. Tailgates and most games will be fun . By year 4 you will be able to walk out of your tailgate into the stadium thinking we have a shot today to win, no matter the opponent. That will be fun .

Oh well that would be a great problem to have. Everyone always wants more all of the time. Look at the entire Michigan fan base calling for Harbaugh who is #13 in the country right now. Think about it. People were actually starting to question Nick Saban’s coaching ability after last night. There will always be wanting more but I just want to see us win more often than not and go to a bowl game in a nice warm vacation spot for the holidays. Anything on top of that every few years is gravy

oh and also since we’ve played hard against them and kept it close until garbage time every year even with terrible coaching, we will also beat Penn state almost every year which I why Plum Street (or should I say P*** St) makes this post .. he’s getting nervous

I dunno. With sustained institutional support, over time (think like 10yrs under Schiano), I think we can play spoiler/upset to OSU, Michigan and PSU on any given day (think MSU or Wisconsin).

Anyone who on a day like today is thinking about 9 win seasons is crazy.

We know the type of talent Greg brought in last go round... I want to see what he can put together for 2020 and 2021. If he can have a decent 2020 class and strong 2021 class, it will only be a matter of time that we’re back Bowling.

My goal for RU football: 4 wins in 2020, 6 wins and Bowl eligibility in 2021. Both are a stretch. Would be OK with 6 wins in 2022.

Wow. That is you first thoughts after hearing this good news. Yikes. But I guess you are planning for the future so you can repost this in a few years. I don’t think it will work this time.

RU to the Rose Bowl in five years!

Even if this does not work out as we all hope we will have the facilities necessary for the next coach to succeed. This time the foundation will be made of concrete.

I will take regularly 6-7 wins and the occasional 8-9 seasons with an outside chance to go higher than that with a hot running back or QB.

Wow! Not even 1 day and people are finding ways to be negative. Rename the thread "For those who can never Be Happy!". We just got the GREATEST Coach we could possibly ask for here and you still bitch about something! Glad I won't be at your Christmas tables.

I don not think that it is unreasonable to expect to be one of the top 3 teams in the conference if GS can hire a big league staff that can recruit. Recruiting is 90% of winning at this level, and we saw how well he recruited with a few top guy his last 2 years here.

Schiano lucks out in the 2020 schedule next year. Non-Conference schedule of Monmouth, Syracuse and @Temple the hardest. The B1G West schedule Illinois, Nebraska, and @Purdue, all winnable. B1G East home games are Indiana, Michigan and PSU, road Maryland, Mich St and Ohio St. They could pull out 6-6, 7-5 next year if he can plug the holes at positions needed next year. As we saw, LBs, DBs, and RBs depth solid and a couple of WRs developed last 8 weeks and kicking is solid. OL and DL needs work and depth but got better as the season went on, need TEs, and we will see what we have at QB for next year. We are only losing a handful of seniors and we will lose some to transfer, so there will be enough spots to plug all the holes and you know Schiano will get his share of PWOs. The cupboard is not bare like 2000.

Greatest coach we could get and willing to come here.

Great points + 1

First let me qualify my post by saying I am not a Schiano is god and the greatest thing since sliced bread believer. However, predicting his success now based on how he achieved his success first time around is, IMO, not valid. Back then he could not recruit the best players from NJ. The overwhelming majority still went to the p5 programs. He adjusted his recruiting to get the smaller faster guys and played the game accordingly. This time we are a p5 program. To assume we will stay a 500type of team because that is what happened last time assumes he will not get a fair share of the 4 and 5 star jersey guys which is what happened last time. If he gets the elite type recruit to come here he can have an elite type team. Time will tell and I am not saying he is god and it will happen I am just saying he has the opportunity to get us to the rose bowl if he gets the players this time around that he couldn’t get last time around. It will hopefully be fun to watch. Go RU

Wouldn't that be amazing. And I think we pull it off occasionally. Mostly we can be sure we'll be beating the teams we should beat.

For example with what I expect our likely high end is with this year's schedule, 9-3 is doable.

Easy there big fella.

It will be interesting.
It will be fun.
It could be great, it will be good for the program.

No reason to complain for a few years.

A little reflection … posted this in 2019 “By year 4 you will be able to walk out of your tailgate into the stadium thinking we have a shot today to win, no matter the opponent.”

I think this is coming true . except for Ohio state this year.

Jeff Brohm took Purdue, a perennial doormat, to 9-4/6-3 in his fifth year. Purdue was 9-33/3-24 in the 4 years before Brohm took over.

His "progress" was far from linear:
2017: 7-6/4-6
2018: 6-7-5-4, beat #2 Ohio State
2019: 4-8/3-6
2020: 2-4
2021: 9-4/6-3
2022: 8-5/6-3

For those who will say, yeah but they are in the West- save it. Divisions are going away. And sure, he started with two straight bowl bids, but if that was Rutgers, some of our esteemed fans would have been screaming for him to be fired after 2019 and 2020.

In 2021, Purdue beat #2 Iowa 24-7, #3 Michigan State 40-21 and beat Tennessee in a bowl game.

Every story and trajectory for success (or failure) is different.

Greg knows what he is doing. He owns his mistakes. He assembled a staff this past off season that will hopefully right the issues that plagued the team in his first 3 years, but more importantly, he is building his team from a decimated roster and program that was left in shambles by Ash. I'll take 8-9 win seasons mixed in with some 5-7 (or even a once in while 4-8) over 2015-2019.

*. Brohm lost to ash . And he also lost to schiano , with the gleeson/langan game plan.

You made a good post . But I figured to add that asterisk 😂

That's a good point. Brohm's team also lost to Syracuse last year. Does that also mean bigger, better Greg-coached Rutgers "could" or "will" beat Ohio State, Iowa and Michigan State this year? Asking for some less optimistic "friends." 🥴

Quoting me from 2019. That's a Deep Cut.

Yes .
Although I predicted a loss yesterday , my long term prediction on schiano is coming true
“By year 4 you will be able to walk out of your tailgate into the stadium thinking we have a shot today to win, no matter the opponent. That will be fun .”

Heading 6-2 into Ohio state , people will walk tout if their tailgates believing !!

that happened by the end of year 4 in the G1 era.
By the end of the 2006 season every game was an expected win, no matter who the opponent was.
Greg , in his first tenure, built RU FB fans expectations so high that by the time he left a Schiano "No" cry was starting to take hold when it came to who some fans wanted as the HC.
So when the G2 era began some still held bitter feelings about the G1 era not bringing home a BE Title or a National Championship and find fault in every move he makes now
I expect once RU goes bowling constantly again many in the fan-base will cry Schiano "No" by the time hos contract expires, unless RU has made the playoffs.

I think most fans will be happy with being a perennial bowl team.

Greed usually wins and when it comes to Rutgers the expectations are low, but Greg built a good program that could be expected in a minor bowl every year, then a lot of Rutgers fans wanted more and complained about not winning BE titles or making BCS Bowl games.
There were some fans complaints that Schiano promised a championship and he didn't deliver.
From no expectations when you root for a bad team, to a reasonable one once the program shows improvement to high expectations once moderate success comes is the rule not exception
That is because no one wants to settle for a moderately successful program forever.
Greed makes fans demand the best once a program becomes a good one.
