So- NIL has changed things a bit, as has the portal.

If this type of momentum was happening in the pre NIL/Portal, with Greg already starting to improve recruiting, without on field success.

We get to a bowl this year and you would have seen even a slightly better recruiting next year and maybe 4 4* instead of 2. Maybe one of those additional 4* is a Zuttah or Britt.

and then we have a run of 3-4 bowls- you would have seen something special start to happen.

NIL and portal- not sure how this will play out for us. We can't win those pure NIL battles, but Greg has been pretty good in the portal- imagine this year without Jackson or Flip.
But I still think if we start getting into a run of expecting bowls and win one of those big games every once in a while- we become more of a steady 7-9 win team with a chance at that 10 win or maybe the down 5 win.

Greed usually wins and when it comes to Rutgers the expectations are low, but Greg built a good program that could be expected in a minor bowl every year, then a lot of Rutgers fans wanted more and complained about not winning BE titles or making BCS Bowl games.
There were some fans complaints that Schiano promised a championship and he didn't deliver.
From no expectations when you root for a bad team, to a reasonable one once the program shows improvement to high expectations once moderate success comes is the rule not exception
That is because no one wants to settle for a moderately successful program forever.
Greed makes fans demand the best once a program becomes a good one.

6-6 in the B1G can get you Phoenix after Christmas against another P5 opponent.

That's very different than the Big East or AAC days.

The elephant in the room is that this is not the same world that Greg entered the first time around. NIL has turned it into a revolving door that pretty much takes away one of his greatest strengths, developing players into winners.
Anyone who has been in the places truly huge programs are in knows that NJ is not even close. So many of the locals are totally immersed in the culture of the team. Money was always available even when it was not legal! Now, the faucets are flowing freely.
My guess is that we will continue to get a lot of 3 star players who think they belong somewhere else. When some of them emerge, they will be drawn to the money and leave. But, I do think like the OP suggests, we can become a middle of the pack team in the league and regularly go bowling.

Sometimes it's a good idea in evaluating a head coach to compare his results with the program to the results achieved by his predecessors. Go ahead. Do it. I have a feeling it will give you a new appreciation of what he's done here.
