We knew we needed size to make inroads to our rebounding problems from last year but our guards are doing a nice job and have made a difference especially Mike and Nigel. Our guards are buying in to being more tough and Mike has been clutch especially the one last night in the last few seconds.

It is a mentality passed down from the top, coach Pikes,

Size helps, but the mindset is the hurdle in becoming a solid rebounder. Rebounding is heart and desire more than anything else. Put the work in and you shall succeed.

Pikiell has the team rebounding by commission. It doesn't exactly lead to great transition play, but the team is not capable of that anyway, and obviously, what Coach is doing is working.

In a near perfect world of basketball, your guards could score, and your forwards and centers could rebound. When the guards did not rebound, they could start to run early against the opposing guards in transition. That creates scenarios that work for our guards, who are having trouble scoring in half court play.

Somebody made a great point when I noted about Mike Williams' tenacity on the boards in another thread.

Really you can thank Eddie for this. Without Eddie playing Williams at the 4 for half the year, he may have never developed these skills. Haha.

One of the things I have noticed about Williams this year is that he seems to have improved his overall athleticism (maybe from a full buy in to the fitness and weight training program of the new regime). I see this from his fast break dunks - I do not recall from the prior 2 seasons Williams getting off the ground as quickly, or with as much explosiveness as he seems to be doing this year. That would also help his ability to rebound.

Maybe so, but a lot has to do with confidence. In year 3, Mike seems finally to be brimming with the confidence that was lacking in prior years. The effort has always been there, but now he also has a little swagger. I'm excited to see how he does in conference play.

Also his rebounding in previous years was not as noticeable do to be out of position and playing against much bigger players.
