Harper is the best RU player driving to the basket I've ever seen (and more)

Quincy Douby also had the drive and finish besides being a tremendous shooter..

When the great UConn teams came to the RAC, I remember commenting on Ray Allen, saying "Geez.. the guy just looks like he isn't trying". The same compliment applies to D Harp.

He hasn't seen the shot blocker he may encounter most nights. Defenses will adjust to what they saw on film last night. How Dylan adjusts to other team's adjustments will really tell us what we have.
You are underestimating his passing ability and basketball IQ . If Dylan blows by the guard and the big man comes over for the block or contest , I expect the ball will find its way to one of our players who will be wide open and has to pull the trigger. He had 6 assists last night with no contribution from PJ and Zack with I doubt will happen often and Jordan missed 3 and later 4 after hitting 2 wide open threes . He had 9 assists last game. If he cannot get up a shot he thinks will go in, his unselfishness will be on display.

Douby and John Battle did come to mind and they were very good drivers but to be fair their outside shots were a bigger part of their arsenal.

Corey driving against Indiana!!!
How did I forget that?
He could drive against anybody too.

Dylan just as so smooth. You can see why Pitino compared him to Frazier

I saw Sellers play as a kid.
Harper driving, taking over a game is very reminiscent…
Sellers, from the 3 successive drives at end vs St John’s in ECAC final, hitting clutch free throws at Manley (Syracuse) while oranges being thrown on floor to get only win by visiting team there in years, to 33 point second half vs USC to nearly pull off upset in Western tournament, to silencing crowd at Hawaii (I was there) etc..
Harper has it.. best since
Too bad we can only see him for a year..

I just need to see it 1st. Driving and getting to the basket is 1st level.....Driving and getting to the basket and finishing at a high rate is the next level (this is a major seperator ask Simpson or Corey Sanders)...The 3rd level is to able to drive without knowing what you are
doing and be able to read the defense and make the decision to finish or pass. Most can't get here.

Dylan has the jump stop down and I believe he is very unselfish so I think this is attainable.

He is going to have the kitchen sink thrown at him over the next few months. He is going to have ups and downs...he is human.

As others have said he has an uncanny ability to will the ball in on drives. Sometimes I can barely see him amongst the defenders and thin how will he make this and it kisses off the glass and rolls in.

Sanders could beat anyone off the dribble and get to the lane.......from there the results were a bit sketchy most times.

Looking back on the Kinnesaw game, before they were taking their final free throws, Pike should have told the team to put the ball in Dylan's hands if the KSU guy missed one or both free throws. If he would have had the ball instead of Ace, I'm pretty confident he would have either drawn a foul, made a tying basket, or made a winning basket.

We did in regulation against ND and he shot an airball

Kansas was double teaming Cooper Flagg all over the place last night, with good effect. It is going to be very interesting to see how teams adjust to Dylan over the course of the season and how he in turn adjusts and responds. It is just so freaking exciting!

ND was sagging and trying to clog the paint late in the game to counter Dylan. I was hoping he'd drive on that last play in regulation, and thought he may have had a lane to do so, but I suspect he was reacting to what he expected the defense to do and picked what he thought was the best option. Every situation is different, but I'm looking forward to seeing how he handles the next situation he faces, and the one after that, etc.

EDIT: I didn't mean to imply that they were sagging off of Dylan. Rather it seemed that on many late possessions they had a couple defenders dropping back into the paint to try to clog the lane

Yeah, that was his one bad decision. Derkack had a poor decision to drive at the end of regulation when we had the lead and there were 20+ seconds on the clock. As soon as he started. I yelled NO!!! at the TV. Lol
At least he made the fts. But ND got it back with over 20 seconds left and set up Allocco's first of 3 straight clutch 3s.
Harper was getting doubled around half court and passed to Derkack. Notre Dame (specifically Roper off the corner) was trying to intentionally foul and Derkack knew it was still 1 and 1 so he tried to take the wide open lane and go to the basket and get a shot up as he was going to get fouled to at least get 2 guaranteed free throws and possibly an And 1. Which seemed a better option than standing around trying to get fouled or getting trapped along the sideline. And remember he didn't shoot it until after he got fouled. 25+ seconds seems too much time to think wasting a few seconds was going to change their last possession.

I just re-watched that play and they doubled him at the perimeter with 4.5 seconds left after an Ace "pick" and he had Ace open for a three. One of the rare times he made the wrong decision on a double team.

Side note: The Ace pick and pop/roll with Harper absolutely needs to be a staple in this offense. It can be unstoppable.

Dickinson got ejected for kicking someone in the face,...after that Duke just went 2 man game almost every possession with their 2 freshman. I want Pike to experiment with that and Ace screen (although not sure if Dylan needs one) and roll....he can also do what we did with Cliff. Go to set the screen but then roll before the screen is actually set.

As I type, I only watched the first 30 minutes of yesterday's game. I'll watch the last 10 minutes and the OT later today. It sounds like it may cause me to rethink this. But probably not.

nah...stick with it....sounds good...different arena and different opponent....plus @mjjoyce51 rewatched and said he was doubled

I am trying to think of the great drivers in RU history.
Phil Sellers, Tom Savage, Steve Worthy, Dahntay Jones, Sanders?
Think Dylan is better than them all. Yes even Phil.
Dabney, Jordan Copeland

I saw the same thing and Pike definitely needs to be trying it, need to get Ace the ball in a better position to attack then always deep in the perimeter with at least one man on him and asking him to create his own shot.

Well, Dylan was the best player on the floor against a potential FF team that plays very good defense and they threw a lot at him tonight, but he was able to still get and convert his shots. 8-9 FG and 9-9 FTs in the 2nd half, plus covering Sears over the last 6 minutes and shutting him down might is probably the best half I've ever seen from an RU player or any player possibly. 37 against Bama is extraordinary.

Was also great to see Bailey play well against a very good team, scoring in all kinds of ways - just wish we had gotten him the ball more in the last 10 minutes, especially after he hit that trey. When we play well, we can play with anyone, so I'm much more hopeful of being an NCAA team now than I was after the Kennesaw debacle and if our complementary guys can get better (there is potential there) and Harper/Bailey continue to play well, we're going to be a team nobody wants to play.

I saw Sellers and Dabney play quite a bit way back then, and their games were quite different from Dylan's. Most of their drives started from a standstill, from what is sometimes called called the triple threat position. Sellers in particular was explosive to the basket from this position. Same for Dabney, and he was also just so quick and would practically fly to the basket on the wing in the fast break. Dylan is different. He is just ridiculous off the dribble. I agree with the OP that he might be the best going to the basket off the dribble that RU has ever had.

He’s the best player in the country.
I think so too.

Clearly the best player ever at Rutgers imo.

If a team has a need for a PG Dylan could go as the number one pick. He’s awesome. Absolutely incredible when playing downhill. Just imposes his will on the opponent.
