Hobbs is the real deal

I happened to spend a lot of time near Pat Hobbs during the Minnesota game and left extremely impressed. This guy just gets it. He spent most of the first half speaking with Keith Sargeant, but during breaks in the action, he would spend time either grabbing a seat next to a donor or chatting with fans. He even brought a goodie bag to the kid that got his leg stuck in the seat. I even saw Hobbs greet Malik Kone, who was at the game.

All in all, this guy seems to be loving his job and getting everyone excited about the future of RU athletics.

There is not one hire of the people mentioned so far that I would say is a great hire. All the names I've heard have negatives. Sendek, Hurley, Brown. Not one guy we're talking about compares to Archie Miller, or a Shaka Smart type. With that said, I still think we will upgrade significantly from Eddie.

Rutgers is not Texas. Elite MM HC's have no reason to risk career at Rutgers.

We're not Virginia Tech either which pays Buzz Williams $2.5 million or more a year.

Support the decision or don't post. Regardless of the outcome. I hope everyone abides by that a week from now.

I have about as much "Inside information" as anyone on this board. I went to Rutgers with someone that works for the school in a department where he hears things, mostly rumors. He is is not hearing that a change is imminent. He may be wrong.

I hope fundraising for facilities is going well. Plateauing wouldn't be good at all.

I have full confidence in Hobbs to right this basketball mess starting with firing Eddie sometime either Thursday or Friday..actually they may wait until next week to not interfere with the Big 10 tournament.

Not sure why RU66 keeps bringing up Julie Hermann since everyone else has moved on and she has nothing to do with whats going on with what Hobbs has to do with basketball. Lets focus on the matter at hand
I don't know basketball firing etiquette but wouldn't firing him during the tourney be ideal? It would be the only way RU gets mentioned after day 1. They would talk potential candidates, rumors, and surely interview Hobbs about it. Seems like good free press to the basketball masses.

understand the sentiment, but sounds a bit restrictive - no dissent allowed here?

I find it hard to believe that Hobbs would take the job if he didn't have the autonomy and authority to make a change.

He has the authority to make the change, but not the autonomy. That is, Hobbs is the one who decides whether to retain or replace Jordan. No one is going to make that decision for him. No one is going to dictate what the decision needs to be. It is Hobbs' decision.

But he doesn't have full autonomy to implement the decision. He needs to justify it to Barchi and the BOG. They will probably ask him questions about the decision, especially about how he is going to pay for Jordan's buyout and the next coach's salary, if the decision is to replace Jordan. But he unless Hobbs sucks at his job, he is not going to be overruled. At worst, he may be asked to go back and gather additional information to support the decision. If Barchi or the BOG were to overrule Hobbs, and change his decision, that is a real indication that they don't trust Hobbs and hired the wrong AD. (And considering that they only hired Hobbs a few months ago, to much fanfare, it is pretty unlikely that they would take action now that indicates they think they hired the wrong guy for the job.)

You're speculating or your source speculates that Jordan isn't going anywhere.

Some of my fellow posters and I have been criticized for saying the opposite, that Jordan won't and doesn't deserve to be back.

If he goes or not.....I won't lose any sleep on it. On the flip side, my guess you and others will go nuts if a change is not made. They would really be fun to watch.

You have spent the better parts of two years defending a coach you real don't care that much about.

Why waste all that time?

2 years ? I hope you are not a fact checker in real life.

Discussions about Jordan's status began in earnest with the start of this season and the fall recruiting season. My opinions have been consistent. Deserves a chance with a full, uninjured roster. If he can't get it done, he should go. But, he is goes this year, so be it. Hobbs will decide.

No - I thought losing 15 straight last year was a clear indication that he wasn't going to get it done, and expressed my displeasure - you defended Eddie all last year

Your fact checking leaves much to be desired. I was not actively posting during last season, only posting a few comments during work hours, certainly not enough to engage in ongoing conversations. You know how I know........ my laptop crashed last winter and I was deciding my next computer purchase. Ultimately, I decided to get a Microsoft Surface in February.

No Change should be made, its a waste of money. If Hobbs is going to ask me for money, I'm certainly not going to give him a dime if he's going to flush the 2 million down the toilet.

If he wants to fire Eddie after next year when he finally gets a shot at coaching a full team, then fine. That will be based on results. To fire him after this year is just idiotic. Rutgers won't see another cent from me if they make the change after this year.

Rutgers just ate a few million in football....then spent a lot on new positions created. Now, the expectation is to eat another couple million in basketball....plus, the millions it would take to entice any coach to come to a program that likes to fire coaches every 3-4 years.....instead of finally addressing the core problems and having shovels in the ground to finally help recruiting (see signature).

The alternative is to give a coach a chance with a full roster of his players, hopefully without injuries.

How many people think Rutgers will eat $4-5 million in one year in football and basketball? That does not even count the increased expenditures in football. People talk like money is growing on a Rutgers tree at the AD's office.

I'll let Hobbs do his job. If he fires Jordan, he found the money.

The jury is still out on Hobbs. He definitely brings a breath of fresh air and is able to connect better with fans and donors. But his success will be based on how much money he can raise.

Thank you, Captain Obvious!

Still doesn't get it.

It is time for a change.
It is over.
Bring in a real "college" coach.

I hope everyone has already sent in their pledge or $ to the build fund --if not that's a sad commentary about some fans--when a decision is made by hobbs-he should have our full support-one way or the other

The R build Fund is a drive for improved facilities. That's the priority. Is there separate fundraising being done by Hobbs to come up with another $2 million plus for a new coach or does anyone think Rutgers will simply eat more money?

I'm lost but what did Ash say about quitting?

He said when he was reviewing film of RU in preparing for last year's RU/OSU game, he felt that the RU players "quit" in games. This is the sort of thing he was saying in explaining how he needs to change the attitude and culture in the RU football program.
