Kill acknowledged he will spend some time before spring camp in March looking back on what worked (and didn't work) this season with Drew Mehringer calling the shots.

"There will probably some things that we keep in, some that we move out and probably have some additions to what we need to do,'' said Kill, who inherits a unit that ranked last out of 128 FBS teams with 283.2 yards per game of total offense, No. 122 in FBS in passing offense, No. 104 in rushing offense and No. 125 in first downs.

QUESTION (seriously)--WHAT WORKED?

I read that article earlier and it seemed like there wasn't a single quote different from what Kill said in his introductory conference. Did I miss something or did NJ.com literally form a new article with old material?

Janarion Grant worked. Once he was out there were not too many more good plays to run.

Mehinger should have went back to the drawing board and designed plays not centered around Grant. To me the play calling got worse as the season progressed.

You don't like running on first down?

Unless Odin wins the starting job don't put him in to do designed runs, it never worked. That stupid screen pass that Mehringer used to run on third and long, take that play to the backyard and shoot it dead. Don't run a reverse in the redzone against Penn State. Play Robert Martin. On fourth and goal against Iowa, don't run an option with the most unathletic QB in the B1G. Throw the ball to a tight end every once in a while.

He has exactly 4 letters in his name...it isnt that difficult

Really hard to do much of anything when teams can live in your backfield rushing just 4.

I can't believe the amount of pressure better teams were able to get against us without having to blitz.

And in our zone runs, it looked like we had difficulty with reach blocks along the interior of our line. As a result, D-linemen could shoot the gaps and create negative plays with direct pressure up the A & B gaps.

Odin will not win the starting job

I hope he starts over with 90% of the offense and agree, the playcalling got worse as the season progressed

You might want to actually LISTEN to what Ash and Kill have said. We're not "starting over." We're running a POWER SPREAD that will be tweaked a bit, that's all, so you and everybody else needs to get away from this notion that you're going to see a whole lot different playcalling-wise next season. Maybe a difference in the frequency/what/when, however, SAME offense.

Hopefully into a true The smashmouth spread with a running QB and more involvement of the RB.

Think Houston and OSU.

Jonathan Lewis is a great runner. Probably better than any QB we had this year. Gio can move a little bit when he's healthy though.

Three and outs are tough on a team whether you huddle or not. There were times where we did not go that fast even without huddling.
I know but it just seemed like the D was exhausted by seasons end. I would love to know how much time they spent on the field compared to the O.

We really didn't run a "hurry-up" that much. Most of the season we took our time getting set and snapping the ball. There are a ton of teams out there, now, who run much, much faster O's than we do.

Yeah- I know...maybe we should have though. Announcers mentioned it all year and yet we barely did it

It all starts up front. I think he spends considerable time with Blazek to figure out what went wrong. Fix the line you fix the offense. End of story.

I agree to an extent: the OL didn't drop 30 passes this season.

Fixing the offense depends on several things. First, will we or will we not have Grant back in the fold. Second, who will the QB be and exactly what will his skill set be, third, how ready to play will the redshirt and true freshman be this year. Especially the WR, OL, and DL. I don't think we or the coaches really know the answer to those questions. If they all fall into place this might be a very good offense, however, there is a flip side I would rather not discuss.

It willl NOT be a "very good" offense even with all that. Better? Yes!
