How is Tubby Smith out at 40 and 22?

2 years and done at Memphis. Just cause he didn't make tourney..wow.
Donations are down over $1.1 million, FedEx Forum is a pretty empty place for home games. So empty that the university owes the Memphis Grizzlies $800,000 for missing an attendance benchmark this season.

The BMDs at Memphis want a return to regular NCAA Tournament days with some deep runs mixed in. Memphis stopped routinely winning 24+ games per season (not to mention 30+ games per season) once they moved up from C-USA to the AAC.

Tubby was a terrible fit for that program and the wrong hire. He is a very good coach, but that town has swag and Tubby has zero swag and little street credibility. He did a very good job this season. They were picked to finish 9th in conference yet finished 5th. Six players left the program after last season and Tubby hit the JuCo ranks hard and developed Jeremiah Martin into the leading scorer in their conference.

Then Martin had a season ending injury with six games left in the regular season. Tubby coached that team to a 5-1 record in those six games.

Well I hope lands somewhere that appreciates good coaching.

They've been to the Final Four 3 times since the early 70s. Two of the appearances were vacated because of cheating, but still.....
They didn't cheat the second time, they played a kid that the NCAA ruled ineligible months after the season ended

Memphis has been vindicated, LOL.

"Memphis must vacate its 38 victories in 2007-08 and return about $533,000 in NCAA Tournament money in part because the organization's judicial body, its Committee on Infractions, decided that star freshman Derrick Rose had a stand-in take the SAT for him, thus making him retroactively ineligible the entire season.

The NCAA also punished Memphis for failing to monitor travel expenses. Investigators found more than $1,700 in unpaid travel expenses by Rose's brother, Reggie Rose. Those included air fare on two trips and five nights of lodging."

Yeah letting Reggie fly on the team plane and stay in the team hotel at no charge was just plain dumb

The video I saw of Colin Sexton from Bama about a year ago lighting up Penny's AAU squad was one for the books.

As he's running down the court after scoring on Penny's son he yells at him " take your son off me-------he stinks ".

For some reason Memphis is under the delusional impression that they're an elite program
Programs that have been successful in the past have high expectations and coaches are held accountable rightly or wrongly depending on fans viewpoints. In contrast at Rutgers low expectations have been the norm as seen by the lack of financial support such as salaries of coaches and facilities not comparable to league competition.Rutgers is in a catch up mode under Hobbs as AD and hopefully Pikiell can finally get Rutgers a winning season and follow it up with a post season tournament bid.

Firing Tubby Smith to replace him with an AAU coach is absolutely and totally insane.

Except for one small thing -- Hardaway IS Memphis. Went there, AAU coach in the area, high school coach in the area. Let's put this another way: If Hardaway was a Rutgers alum and was doing these things in Elizabeth, half of this board would be begging RU to hire him. Begging. (At least before the last coaching hire, anyway.)

Memphis can be a very high-level program. Great recruiting base, good fan base, large building. But it's not a school that's guaranteed to be a high-level program no matter what. The right guy has to be in place, and even some good coaches won't be the right guy.

I may have missed it but I don't recall seeing Penny coach any of the Team Penny games. More of a founder and CEO of Team Penny.

Definitely a very good HS Coach. Still need to assemble an experience college coaching staff. Should not have much trouble recruiting especially point guards.

I think he will be the only active college coach with his own shoe line.

Rumor was Larry Brown was one “assistant”

Saw his name floated as someone Penny told boosters that he could get. I didn't see where it specifically said "assistant". I think hiring Brown is risky, recruiting violations & sanctions wherever he's been a HC.

But they weren't Larry Brown's fault! LOL.

Always reminds me about Corey Maggette and how Duke somehow didn’t have to vacate their 1999 final four.
