How Many Sacks Do We Get This Weekend?

We'll bring some pressure, but they get the ball away quickly. Tough prediction.

I'm going with two.

3 maybe 4.
Hamilton out and Turay not be 100% really hurts.

3-4. The Dragon is back, and JPO looked like a different player last week. He was all over the place.

2. Hopefully our D Linemen can get their hands up and disrupt some passes that way.

I'm thinking if the answer is less than 4 sacks, we lose the game. We need to be disruptive, because the CBs aren't going to hold up in coverage if the QB has a lot of time. I expect us to out play them early, when both teams are trying to play a standard game. The ability of WSU to come back once they sell out and simply start passing every down has me very concerned. I see lack of QB pressure on sustained passing attack drives in the 2nd half as the top risk for a loss.

Disruptive doesn't always mean causing sacks.

WSU likes to get rid of the ball fast, often on short passes. There usually isn't time to get to the QB for a sack, unless it's in a 3rd and long situation.

But we can still be disruptive on the line. With enough pressure, those short throws can be hurried, off target, or batted down.

The bigger question is how well do we handle passes to a WR with two lead blocking WRs - they went to that well a lot last year with success, and we need to break up those plays.

Agreed. While I'm worried about Hamilton being out, JPO looked like he filled his shoes pretty well. JPO may not have the technique that Hamilton has but he's bigger and has great instincts. I don't think JPO is much of a downgrade as we thought.

I hate this play. It is pass interference 1/3 of the time and never called. Fresno State and WSU and others have killed us with it. I haven't seen any schematic or personnel changes to combat it. Half seriously, I would take a big mofo like a tight end /fullback/big linebacker and line him up across from the 3 WRs. Let him knock the snot out of them and put them on their asses a few times. WRs are rarely hit by big bodies, it's usually a 185 pound corner. Let's see how well the WRs play the rest of the game. Yes, I realize it's ridiculous but can Rossi do something to address it?

I believe Portland State had 2. I watched the last WSU possession and they were only rushing three sometimes, dropping eight into coverage. No idea what they did most of the game.

Getting off blocks and screens, then tackling, is going to be huge for our young guys. I wouldn't mind seeing Cioffi at corner against this team, as he has a nose for the ball and is physical.

LOL... see trips set up, swing Turay out there. "Just knock your guy back into the guy with the ball"

They go for it on 4th down most of the time, giving us more opportunity for sacks. We will have at least 4 sacks and win this game by 10 points.

The official stats from PSU-WSU: zero sacks for PSU; 5 tackles for loss...

Just hope your DB's are good open field tacklers.
Me, too. Our tackling technique was solid against Norfolk State, so we'll see if that continues against you guys. I'm much more concerned about tackling than takeaways.

I think the biggest question for our DBs is whether they'll be in the right position. A few times against Norfolk State (mostly in the early part of the game), I saw blown assignments and players out of position. Austin had a particularly rough first drive.

They'll have had a whole week as the "new two deep" to prepare, though, which should help them.

4 sacks and 2 INT's...ST's will have a major impact. We should win by at least 13 pts. Got to get ahead and keep the pressure on.45-31 or something like that.

need to jam the receivers, not sure if our freshman can do that, even one second delay is enough for the front 7 to hurry the QB.

QB throws late, timing is off, Cioffi gets the pick back for 6

Agree. They like to get the pass off quickly to receivers only a few steps past the line of scrimmage. Last year, we played right into their hands by playing off the line and letting the receivers run wherever they wanted. If we do that Saturday, there won't be time for anyone to sack the QB and we'll have to rely on open-field tackling. We don't have to try to jam them every time, but do it enough to throw off their timing on a bunch of plays.
