How many years until we have a Gary Waters like team?

In the long run we shall see. Alvarado might miss home next year like many young players do. His family and friends will not see him play too often. He just might wonder if he made a mistake. I like our staff and the direction we are heading.

Who knows. I don't want it to sound like losing out on him means we can't have success with other recruits.

I just see Jose as an intangibles type of player. He is talented enough to keep a defense honest, but the other things he brings to the game is what has made him stand out (player of the year n NYC). I think he has the Bobby Hurley intangibles, not saying he will have the success in college that Bobby had (not many had or will).

But I do really like this staff and can't wait for the season to start.

I can guarandarntee you that it won't take Pikeil 8-10 years to get to the level that Waters had RU. He'd be gone, and rightfully so, way before then.

It's true that Waters was the highpoint of RU's last few coaches. Maybe not the best, but he didn't let his temper, laziness, ability to bark at umpires from behind a tree in the outfield, or bartending skills undermine him. Yet the fact that what Waters did is seen as a high point only re-emphasizes what a crapmess RU basketball has been. Waters is a good coach, but he was miscast in NJ and the northeast. Even with that, he's the best we've had in a while. Jeez.

You left out naked free throws. :)

Took Schiano 6 years...Let me lower my number to 6-8 years until program can reasonably start a 5 year period where we are part of BACs NCAA bubble threads in at least 3 of 5 next years.

If Pikiell is the one, or at least could be the one I beg fans and AD to keep the coach and not start the coaching carousel. I repeat...anyone who thinks all a good coach needs is time is really underestimating how difficult it will be in this conference to succeed.

Michigan State, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Maryland
Iowa, Ohio State, Purdue
Nebraska, Illinois, Penn State, Northwestern, Minnesota
Rutgers

I would expect to see a tough, gritty squad this year that does not have the talent to finish .500 but a team that we all will be proud of. Similar to the Waters teams of the early 2000's. Opponents knew that you could not take the night off and come away with a W (like we saw the past 3 years).

Once Coach P brings in his level of recruits then we will see the rise in the standings. I am thinking that is 3-5 years out. Coach P's mentor, Jim Calhoun, took UConn from the 8/9 game in the Big East to the Big East championship game in 4 years. I am not saying that we will be in the B1G championship game in 4 years but I could see us in the top half of the league in Year 4 or 5 with this coaching staff.

I guess that Waters himself is an example of how RU can get to the Waters level in less than 5 years, and back then RU was arguably in a better conference.

But then, this is all a very high level of speculation, even for a message board, as Pikiell hasn't coached a game or a season yet and hasn't brought in a recruiting class that is fully his. He's likely going to have to do that 2 or 3 times before it's possible to give any reasonable thoughts on him. Every new coach looks great before the games begin.

C'mon can we have some pride around here and hope for a little better than a Gary waters team? Maybe a little better than hoping for a team that never had a winning season in conference and treated every confernce road game as a no show job?
Maybe it's because we are Rutgers and considered a joke an embarrassment on many levels. But one day I hope we will have a team we can actually be proud of and not a Gary waters type team.
Gary Waters was the last good coach the we had around here. Everyone after him was trash.

RU's winning % under GW,for 5 seasons, was .5074. I wouldn't be happy with a reprise of that.Nor do I expect it.Coach P. and Staff should be able to put very good teams on the boards in the very near future. WTB(with the Blessings)

Gary was a good coach, but not the type of recruiter that could get enough talent on the roster to make Rutgers a constantly good team. He just couldn't bring in the talent and he wasn't going to succeed in the BE with the type of talent he was bringing in against the type of programs he was facing A few upsets could be expected, but not enough to make RU dancing material

I often wondered if Mulcahy didn't try to cut Waters throat because he was afraid the Hall would poach Freddie, what type of team would have come out of Waters' coaching ability alongside Hill's recruiting ability if they stayed together for a couple of years.

Seels We sat with Gary at the team hotel in Scottsdale the morning of the Insight bowl He was more open and honest than any coach I have ever seen . He knew his days were numbered and we were sympathetic. I liked Gary. I think he got hosed.

Douby and Hamady played in the NBA. That doesn't happen often here. And yes, Gary needed a better recruiter with NJ ties on his staff.

Pikiell built a heck of a staff when got here. Very, very good step one.
