It always shocks me how stupid these kids are. Given a chance to make something of themselves they blow it.Who are they going to blame? The system, the public, their upbringing, the MAN? Cut me a break, some of these kids are just bad seeds, and not worth the effort. I blame the parents, I really do. You don't need money to raise a good kid. You don't need money to teach kids to treat others with respect. You don't need money to teach your kids right from wrong. What you need is to know what your kids are doing in school, who they hang out with, and how they treat family and friends and perfect strangers.

I used to think that a lot of athletes really missed some the great stuff in going to college. But, since I attended without benefit of a scholarship, those same athletes were getting something I could only dream about. So, I guess it kind of evens things out in the end.
As for leeway, we all had to follow certain rules no matter what our status on campus. Cross the wrong lines and your pass could be canceled pretty quickly. Since scholarship athletes are receiving a virtual pay slip to attend, they are more like employees than regular students. I guess we have to try and be more aware of what they are doing when not on the various fields. But, I really don't hold anyone in power as responsible for them going off the reservation either. The university can only do so much and it is up to the athletes themselves to show that they are worthy of the school's trust.

If you don't know that you shouldn't rob people or beat them up by the time you get to college, I don't know that a football coach can change that.

However, the coach still has to take some blame for the fact that he recruited them, and kept them on the team.
