BB Recruiting Hyatt Update

We could get a quick, smaller PG who may not be as talented as Mulcahy and who could play about 10 mins a game as needed. Maybe a grad transfer (not the grad transfers that the big time schools are looking for) but someone thrilled to play in the B1G even in a limited role

The B1G has many smaller, quicker PG's (6'2 or smaller ), plus, Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State are each bringing in 4 star PG's that are 6'1 or smaller.

We probably need to have at least one on our roster who can easily get into the lane and better defend against penetrating PG's.

We just need big ten players. Doesn't matter height, speed etc. I have seen short guards play great in the big ten. I have seen shorter PF play greatbin the big ten. Both because hey excel elsewhere. Our problem has always been our undersized guard isn't a big ten player. Same for the undersized forward. Just keep bringing in highly talented guys like Hyatt, Mulcahy, Mahmoud etc. and we will eventually win. Or do t and we won't.

Yes, talented and B1G level. That's needed, we learned the hard way with Good and Souf....yes, you were right on that one.

But match-up are also important. You match quick guards with quick guards. My concern is having our tall guards trying to keep up with Isaiah Washington, Antony Cowan, Nate Mason, CJ Jackson and others in the Big 10. Length is great to have and I love it, but Speed / Quickness is very important as well. Right now, we lack the latter.

We have had a dreadful offense the past 3 years with a guard that opponents couldn't stay in front of. Lack of quickness defensively from our perimeter players is on the list of concerns, but certainly not near the top.

Corey could certainly break down his defender. But (in addition to having a very erratic jump shot) he didn’t know how to really utilize that ability. Everything was at one very high speed. He could not see the opportunities drawing bigs created for teammates and always found himself with very tough finishes against much bigger interior guys.

When to go, when to slow. Key!

That's the beauty of message boards... Different view points. IMO, Speed in basketball is very important. You can teach and improve shooting, but, you can't teach speed.

Even with all his flaws, Corey Sanders may have been the only offensive player other teams were concerned about.... And that was due to his ability to get into the lane with quickness to finish or draw fouls.

On the defensive end he used speed to get thru picks like no other guard on the team could do.

People can get faster.

I would like to see a 35% shooter on this team moreso than someone who can throw down great dunks and run really quickly. Viewpoints do differ. I made one once and you called me a jackass I believe. Now you are preaching people can have different opinions. Well respect when other people have them.

Come on... Stop making up stuff. "Jackass" is not even a word that I use on this message board or real life.

You said your view point means "Jack shit"

I just find it funny that now you preach that this is a message board, and people can have different viewpoints.

Context is important and you taking that out of context. ... U should tell everything that happened, if not, I'll find it

Context is important. It was nothing viscous. it Was my viewpoint, which you didn’t like, and that’s fine. Now you tell others that it’s a message board and people have different viewpoints, and you have been preaching that. If it is a message board with differing viewpoints, respect others if you want yours to be respected.

Two grown men in a pissing match on an anonymous online message board about a conversation neither can remember. C'mon now folks. Let's stick to basketball.

No pissing match but I just wanted to bring up a point to allow people to put their takes on a message board and keep it respectful if you want the same.

I am with you on the defensive end.....not with you on the offensive end. When did Corey sanders hurt a team driving to the basket and finishing or getting fouled. They set up the Venus fly trap...let him beat the guy right...and get sucked right in to help. The big fear was the weakside offensive rebound after the help guy was out of rebounding position.

Re: speed and quickness:

The former you cannot really improve in a meaningful way by college. The latter you certainly can and is probably most important in basketball. In fact, there are plenty of slower players that are quick because they can shoot (I’d say Matthias from Purdue is a prime example). If the defender has to react to your threat to shoot, you gain a split second edge which can be huge. Corey was very fast, but not quick because he didn’t pressure the defense into quick decisions

I understand what you are saying and I am not saying I completely disagree. Just saying if our taller slower PG is Carr from PSU then the smaller quicker PG has to defend him too. It’s a mismatch the other way and now you have a game. But if the taller slower guy is Marquis Webb then the other team has the advantage.

Blasphemy! You must have missed this board's vilification of Pikiell for giving Mensah and Bullock scholarships.

The problem with grad transfers nowadays is that everyone is on them.

There are very few surprises out there.

Still think the Barnes kid from RMU is a great fit for Rutgers

Agreed, I am certainly not advocating for a group of guards that are all 6'2 or smaller....just one with speed and quickness on the roster that can help with certain matchups at the PG spot. Obviously, he should be a complete player or close to it.

On SHU: "They make the tournament almost every year."

This is how quickly perception can change if we can get back to the dance. SHU has gone to the tournament the last 3 consecutive years.... over the prior 21 seasons, they went just 3 times (and their 3-year streak is coming after a 9-year drought).
Tradition to recruits is who won last year.

I believe that as well. SHU made the NCAA 3 years in a row which was good but even many of their own fans question how it was done. They hired Tiny Morton who coached Whitehead and Rodriguez. They hired Antigua who coached Delgado. Carrington was big in NYC as well so they had 4 outstanding recruits. Although none of the moves were illegal many felt it was under handed or unethical. SHU could be very good this coming season but that remains to be seen. They lose an awful lot. We did beat them this past season and I would not be surprised if we beat them again this coming December. Also, SHU is in hot water with the NCAA over Whitehead supposedly being paid twice while at SHU. They also just lost Shaheen Holloway their top recruiter who took the Head job at St. Peter's. He was very good and that should sting a bit.
