I’m changing Gavin’s last name to WINsatt!!!!

This is nice, long winded and verbose, but it isn’t relevant to our situation

Not one Rutgers quarterback hasn’t struggled with accuracy issues at one point or another, because they were due to poor mechanics rather than lack of talent.

Wimsatt shows he has what it takes when he threaded the ball between two MSU defenders so that Shameen Jones could catch a TD pass. He has made several other tough throws across his body to beat Illinois.

Where he has struggled is when he has made poor decisions and/or demonstrated poor mechanics, which can be corrected. That is why we are paying Kirk C.

As long as he completes 50% of his passes, that’s good enough, because he is going to make plays with his feet.
A 50% completion percentage isn't going to win a lot of games.

Wrong. Artur improved to beat Penn State and Nebraska, while playing for Illinois. He also beat Maryland while playing for us.
Dude he was 8-19 for 38 yards and 1 INT against Penn State. He was not the reason why Illinois beat Penn State. I am sorry but beating a 3-9 Nebraska team that was a train wreck is not impressive.

Football is the ultimate team Sport. You win and lose as a team. His performance may not have been pretty, but at the end of the day, he got the job done.

I’m sure between this board we could get enough members to pitch in $5-10 bucks a piece to fund a years long premium eHarmony account for you…. A girlfriend would really go a long way here

6 games is good enough for this year

It’s not even about his overall completion percentage. We want him to be able to throw the damn ball away to avoid sacks. He has a strong arm so he’ll be encouraged to take shots down field. As long as the placement isn’t in spots that open us up for interceptions it’s fine if more than half of those passes fall incomplete. It would be awesome if he completed even 40% of his long ball passes as long as the others aren’t getting picked much.

The million dollar question with Gavin is about the short / midrange game that our fan base has forever taken for granted prior to GW. Remember Laviano? Flash back to when this board absolutely ripped him for so many of his completions being short. That kid was dang near automatic though from in close. Leading into this season, that’s been GW’s biggest flaw. For us to be competitive Gavin needs to be a whole lot closer to automatic on these passes than 50% accuracy. At this point, even if some of the side passes result in no gain, thats okay. Throwing those passes reliably forces the defense to prepare for them. Gavin misfiring on them routinely becomes a big problem for our run game. This is where he must show major improvement for us to have a legit chance of making strides.

Agree wholeheartedly. His football IQ must demonstrate improvement this year.

We’ll see how things go. Ironically, the biggest reason for optimism going into the season is that this particular issue was truly an observable flaw in Gavin’s individual game rather than a team issue on offense. This is not to say our OL is “good”. But Gavin’s accuracy issues in his short game specifically had very little to do with protection level. He just flat out wasn’t reliable on simple lateral passes even when he had ample time. Even against Wagner… If just this changes (and nothing else) on offense, our overall production would improve a lot on offense. If he’s still inaccurate from in close he probably doesn’t end the season as our QB and we’re likely in for another long year. It’s that simple.

Hard to disagree. The short passing game is the low lying fruit that must function effectively.

Mr. Optimistic is the best nick-name name for rutgersal.
Keep on being optimistic while surfing in the sea of negativity
that surrounds the RU football program on this board.

Pessimistic attitudes might be more acceptable for many RU fans on this board, but I enjoy seeing a healthy dose of optimism that helps make RU FB look like it will be a program yo be proud of.

At this point of the season you have to be hopeful, and look for positives.
I am hopeful GW realizes half of his potential. As far as the optimism for me it’s cautious.
I struggle with the shortcomings GW has exhibited as a QB, shortcomings which have historically been shown as difficult to overcome.
The comments from BTN and Richies podcast about Gavin add more caution to my optimism

Because we are going to win lots this year!! Wish I could take credit. But that belongs to ddsmugs who made the suggestion on the premium board.
you do know it's inappropriate to post Premium Material over here right?
(just kidding...this would be good if it comes true so my response is currently PENDING) 🤔

nothing wrong with being cautious or even pessimistic about a player or season and even postting those feelins.
But those that are not optimistic shouldn't get upset if someone constantly posts optimistic posts on this board. Even if they seem a little overboard at times.
Just seeing he's no good, Rutgers is a loser, the HC sucks and messages like that make for a depressing board.
Hell after seeing a lot of doom and gloom being posted on here I start enjoying the nuts go at it in the OT threads that are just CE BS from both sides..
The doom & gloomers claim to be a realist just like the OT nuts do when insulting each other because of the position they take on the ever changing issues being argued about.🤪

I've never been good enough to play a sport -- I was always the last kid picked in school, and for good reason. But there's one thing I do know: you have to keep an even keel to be successful; you can't too high when you win or too low when you lose. My problem is that @rutgersal encourage people to have unrealistic expectations that are bound to be disappointed. He is also so unrealistic that he discredits optimism. It's like having someone make such an exaggerated argument for a position that it makes that position seem bad.

I think the overall disconnect that fans gave, are never being able to project forward where players improve, what roles become expanded and how that creates a pecking order in terms of offense, defense, rebounding and passing.

I know it sounds silly, but Hyatt is the 2nd most experienced Scarlet Knight in terms of minutes played behind Cliff. He is also the 2nd highest returning scorer, behind Cliff.

What happened last year with roles/responsibilities, has NO bearing on what fans should expect or not expect this year.
Last year's team was starved of any athletic abilities or lacked an ability to get transition baskets. That placed more emphasis on stationary shooting (Spencer) and the lack of scoring, made fans hyperfocus on any defensive lapse or breakdown by Hyatt, Mulcahy or others, to the point that if RU didn't smother everyone on defense, it was an issue.

Because this team last year was so reliant on Caleb and Mag to be all-B1G caliber defenders, it placed more focus on them, vs reality of the steep dropoff when one or both didn't play.

On the 2023-24 roster, the guard defense will be significantly more effective AND the guards will be able to get cheaper transition baskets (deflections, steals, etc). It reduces the need to Mag or a Caleb type of player, because the guards will be better in the 1st line of defense.

There's virtually no reason this year's roster won't score more points and it should still be a Top 3 B1G defense with the guards and Cliff and Ogbole in the paint.

I agree. Especially after listening to Richie’s podcast. I mean, coming from someone who has actually been at the practices it doesn’t sound like we should expect Gavin to suddenly look like a completely different player.

Added in a basketball thread comparable for better measure to your point. Hawk thinks we’re on par to have a top 3 BIG defense. There’s no basis at this time to predict that and put that expectation on a bunch of frosh and guys who have not notoriously been good defenders and/or are returning from major injuries. Different sport. Same concept.
