I liked it better in the Old Big East

Pre modern era, but we give up 58 to Wesleyan, but still record 2 safeties or they give us 4 points. Have never seen a game with 4 points.
Maybe you haven't lived long enough and that's why you never seen it [laughing]
But on September 5, 1987, the Miami Hurricanes beat the Florida Gators 31-4
and on October 23, 2004 Iowa beat the school Who Cannot Be Named 6-4

Hey pal :) what happened? Don't you go into your coma on days like these? Good to see you out getting some fresh air ;)

"A Wolverine fan born and raised in Michigan"....don't worry about me. I used to not post on game day but sometimes it's just not possible. The same people who were making excuses for Flood's awful recruiting, and coaching, are bashing Ash who is handcuffed by the lack of QUALITY DEPTH on this roster and that's why I've ditched by "48-hour rule." Some of these guys claimed Washington wasn't good and then bashed Ash for getting stomped by them. Boy do they look stupid right now. They thought our O would automatically be better despite losing our #1 weapon and #1 OL'man,, having WR's who never did a thing against a single good passing D and lousy TS's, and installed a new O with a QB who isn't made to run it with the guy who can being a true frosh.. People didn't want to listen to me - and others - to the point of getting me banned for speaking realistically from the Kent State disaster until the day Flood was canned. Our roster is littered with Flood recruits who - NO FAULT of their own - had either NO or minimal P5 offers other than RU OR had more FCS offers than FBS ones. But no...they were ALL "hidden gems"...all "diamonds in the rough" ...all didn't bother to "list the rest of their offers." I dealt with listening to these guys defending Fudd and got banned for speaking truthfully. All the crap about "well they didn't ist their other offers after blah, blah, blah...." Bullshit. Called this 3+ years ago (as did others). Many of us completely expected to get rocked by Washington, and called it from the moment the season was over, regardless of who was HC this year, and bamm! OSU and Michigan? Probably 2 of the 5 or 6 best teams in the nation even though only 1 will make the playoff. We should have beaten Iowa by 2 TD's. The play calls were there, however, our QB overthrew Harris a wide-open twice then decided to play "I can do this," instead of pitching to a wide-open Harris, on the 4th down play.... 21 points on those 3 plays but people want to bitch about Merhinger and the play calling while we DO NOT have the personnel right now.. Hysterical. "Athletic" teams - which Iowa isn't - will do more of the same which is why I don't like our chances against Minny, Illinois, Maryland, or Penn State (aside from Mich, MSU) We'll see, however, all of us who predicted 4-8 are probably going to be on-the-mark, unfortunately, unless we pull some major upsets. I think we beat Indiana and get 1 of the other 4 original "toss-ups" from Ill, PSU, Minny and Maryland. We will be the underdog in EVERY game from here on out. No question. One thing we could NOT afford this year was injuries to our 1st team and we got crushed losing Grant and Lambert. ST's suck other than Grant - thanks to the lack of quality depth - and even his punt and kick TD returns were ALL on his own. No "gaping holes' or anything else for him to make things easy. Not Ash and Co's fault, either, IMHO.

Peace.

Spot on.

You know, I would have loved a "real" Big East. All of the "old Big East" and throw in Penn State and Maryland. I would have enjoyed that. Rivalries, teams within driving distance, history, etc.

But, much like Rutgers-Princeton and being rivals with Lehigh and Lafayette, that ship has sailed, albeit for different reasons. As a university, if not a sports program, we are where we belong with other flagship state universities with comprehensive academic and athletic programs. And I'm thrilled. Patience isn't easy when you've had more rough years than good ones over your lifetime, but Hobbs and Ash -- and Pikiell, for that matter -- aren't weighed down by decades of untapped potential and missed opportunities. Bitch for a day about games like today and then sit back and think about the possibilities headed our way. At least until next week.
This is one of the reasonable posts I've read all day. Kudos.

My cell has been blowing up all day with group texts abusing the team and today's performance. I'm quite certain many others as well. Telling friends and coworkers 'we're in the B1G' is old news (and no one cares) and for the fans at the stadium week in and week out, the bottom line is seeing a good product and WINNING .....As the saying goes, winning cures all.
We're way over our head in this conference...obviously

Will it change someday? Very likely yes....and that's when a big time splash hire is made imo....like a Schiano

Until that day.....my advice is to buckle up
Are you saying that schiano would be a big splash hire now? Because he wasn't a big splash when he first got the ru job, he was basically Ash (DC from a national power, first hc job, changing the culture to rebuild). And remember how long it took for him to right the ship.

100%. It's about name branding as much as anything and he has it. And yeah he can coach up a defense

Who would have ever believed we'd be playing kids from Tennessee and Texas? One reason.....B1G branding
Add a guy like a Schiano and the handful of local high schools who recruit the entire state start to become ours to lose

the faster that happens the better....not saying CA won't do it but he's got a long road in front of him

Yea the old Big East was great!

Excellent post. It's one thing when Ohio State, Michigan and Nebraska beats your ass to a bloody pulp. But when the likes of Pitt, BC and West Virginia are doing it it's way more embarrassing.

i could care less that we lost 58-0 and have no expectations for this season. With that said, even if Ash does a good job what is to say we will ever get near the level of OSU, UM, MSU, etc. My point is we may be punching above our weight even when we turn this around. The old Big East we could at least compete if we had good coaching and good talent for us.

Chrissakes...I'm just glad all you guidos aren't feeling this way. Good luck the rest of the year from your hillbilly friends.

I have friends who are sceptical of Rutgers football. Honestly, the "respectable" win against Iowa last week mattered more to them than the blowout this week. They don't see how Iowa is weaker than they should be or etc. They expect OSU to pummel us and are seeing "progress" when we compete against decent B1G teams. Beat Indiana, beat Il, and beat PSU, and the season was decent on all levels.

Now will we win those 3 games? Not unless we fet our heads out of our butts, stop dropping easy catches, get our QB either out of the game and find a better one, or wake the hell up etc. Unfortunately, I don't think we win these games, maybe 1 or 2 of them, however, it is there to happen. If we lose every year to Michigan and OSU I can take it if we have years where we beat the rest of them and go to a good bowl. So chill out.

My thing is, yes it sucks getting destroyed, but you know what? I went about this whole week acting like we didn't have a game this week. I just counted it out and checked in in the first quarter but other than that, I didn't watch, I just did some fall activities and enjoyed my Saturday. I'm getting ready for an awesome tailgate Saturday and also again, not thinking about the win or loss.

Gotta stay sane and just watch things build. This isnt the year, and after Grant went down, it's really not the year. Just gotta hope the class stays together and Oden or another QB emerges next season and we come out swinging next year

Sorry, missed them both. I like the Iowa game if it were 5 safeties.
The 1942 Sugar Bowl saw Fordham beat up on Missouri. 2-0.
I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a 3-2 bowl game. It could have been St. Mary's.

What a third rate loser's mentality. It makes me puke to think you're serious.

Fair point of view. Im afraid we will be like Indiana or Purdue or Vandy in SEC. Maybe a 10+ win season every 15 yrs or so. Mostly at best 7-8 wins each season
I also have that fear. Have been waiting years for a turn around, and it doesn't help that I'm not getting any younger.

Dude, we are a national joke today, our score against osu has college football fans across the county laughing at us. Getting our asses kicked for half the money everyone gets sure isn't awesome.

Not that this thread needs another post, but, tOSU blows everyone out. I spent the time to read this thread (ugh) and not one person mention the 50 plus point shutout tOSU put in Wisconsin in the big ten champion ship game two or three years ago. Proves the point that once the week comes and goes it just doesn't matter big picture. Oh and Wisconsin is doing just fine since.

Looking at the AP top 25, there is really only a handful programs that can be comparable to Rutgers in terms of fan support, recruiting base and financial support and some are a stretch. There is no reason why we can't be any of those teams, but realize it's not easy to complete with the 20 or so other programs who just have more resources and support than Rutgers has.

Those teams are:
Houston
Louisville (stretch)
Miami (stretch)
Baylor (stretch)
Boise St
Colorado
West Virginia
Utah

Fortunately we have a better recruiting base than half of those teams.

I understand both sides. I warned that culturally we had very little in common with the B10. The ACC was a much better fit, especially from a geographical standpoint. No one needs to be lectured on why this happened, it's a 5 letter word that starts with m and ends with y. In 10 years we will be considered a full member from a financial standpoint, and the influx money will help (maybe). Does the B10 mandate that its revenue be earmarked strictly for athletics? If not, Trenton will most definitely cut appropriations. I could be mistaken, but once the revenue is distributed I don't believe there is a B10 oversight board.

Sorry, but it was the 1936 Sugar Bowl, LSU. 3 TCU. 2. Illegal grounding in the end zone.
1901 Rose Bowl (not the official name) Michigan was beating Stanford so badly, Stanford quit with 8 minutes left.
Or the 1923 Rose Bowl. Cal vs Wash & Jeff passing was just allowed and the passing yards were ZERO. We could maybe tie it.

its a no brainer to be in the Big 10 but the reality is it will take decades to get to the level of Ohio State/Michigan. Schools like Indiana, Illinois and Purdue continue to chase that dream. Every now and then someone at the bottom will pop up for a great season or two but its those two programs and then the rest hoping they can get to the second level of this league like Wisky and Iowa. RU isnt getting full money for another 5 years so its going to be awfully tough to get better than 7-5 in the next few years

In order to beat an OSU team lead by Urban Meyer and a Michigan team lead by Jim Harbaugh or perhaps a Michigan State Team lead by Dantonio (sp) will be almost on par with winning a lottery. This is what you'll need to win: a team loaded with 5th year seniors. Good all around talent and very good talent in key positions such as QB, RB, WR, kicker and punter. Finally, you will need the zebra's to give you every possible break. The team I just mentioned would probably finish 8-4. Now ask yourself, how far are we away from such a team??

People do realize we very well may have received our 2 big road losses against the potential National Champion and potential National Runner-up, correct?

Haven't read the thread but I was scared that sentiment would happen with some. I think it's a factor in declining season ticket sales-I was scared and think Rutgers overestimated the attraction in getting beat up by the big Ten biggies. I thought it might hurt ticket sales with some (once the initial excitement) as in our old leagues we were constantly battling for a bowl game. Nowadays wed be have thrilled with the Yankee Bowl.

***That said it was a NO BRAINER to join the B1G-that may have saved RU football. We were in grave danger of being left out of the major conference. Our top competitors had left or were a threat to leave. There was no guarantee the AAC would or will survive.
Ask UCONN if they are happy with their situation. Also with RU there is a long history of not recruiting well vs the top conferences (i.e. in hoops A-10 vs Big East-turning down the Big East 3 times essentially killed our basketball program).

***Based on the TV revenue ALONE B1G admission was a must. RU as a state school, needs to follow Title 13 (and was supporting 20+ college sports teams) and we were losing about as much money on college sports as any school in the country.

Myself and many others wished and hopes for the ACC as there were essentially more (geographic) rivals, but the call never came. I'm positive the administration tried and I remember several of us writing my old D-Bag chancellor at UNC and ACC Commissioner Jim Swofford.

Unfortunately it may not show on the field for awhile-or ever- but B1G admission was a blessing. Hopefully we have a bunch of supportive fans who wll be there no matter what the record.

UA Today IS right-irrelevant topic. Surprised they didn't include one of the Flood threads.

Dude, we are a national joke today, our score against osu has college football fans across the county laughing at us. Getting our asses kicked for half the money everyone gets sure isn't awesome.

It's good that we're being laughed at because it means people are paying attention. People didn't laugh at WVU 80, RU 7 and BuffaNova because they weren't paying attention. The problem with the Big East days is there were no national expectations. We had a chance to be "the fly in the ointment" because a Big East team was never worthy enough to play for the BCS Title. People didn't start paying attention to RU until 2006. Remember in 2007 when Reece Davis said, "Welcome to the regular season Rutgers!" when Maryland beat us fairly soundly at home after rolling Buffalo, Navy, and Norfolk State? Opening the 2008 season by getting our ass kicked on opening day by Fresno State at home?

The truth is that RU has never had the ability to play the schedule we're playing. This is something we former "schedule tards" knew that many people here wanted to deny. We believed we needed to pay the price and play teams like Ohio State in order to get to the point where we could beat teams like Ohio State. West Virginia and Louisville would play those types of teams and RU was 0 for WVU and 3-6 vs. Louisville.

RU vs. the best of the Big East:
Miami 0-11
Virginia Tech 1-12 (won in 1992)
West Virginia 2-19 (won 2 of the first 4 in 1992 and 1994)
Louisville 3-6
Cincinnati 3-6
RU was 1-15 vs Syracuse from 1987 -- 2002.
RU was 3-11 vs Pitt in the first 14 seasons of Big East play.

Yeah, I miss those days.

There is nothing wrong with striving to ba a Nebraska or an Iowa . Their fans are passionate and enjoy themselves immensely. Be patient and enjoy the journey,as bumpy as it may be. Remember that sports is cyclical..urban and harbaugh and dantonio will not be there forever. When they leave, and they will, those schools will backslide a bit into the rest of the pack.

The B1G is the greatest thing to ever happen to Rutgers Football. Ever. It's about the money.

We play better programs during the regular season then we played in all our bowl games. The B1G is the best conference in the land.

To be exact, the score WVU put on us that day when we were in the "Old Big East" which some seem to be pining for as the "good old days" was 80-7, (and that's with GS as HC). -So you were actually only off by 1 point, but any way you look at it, that was a slaughter, (and WVU definitely wasn't the #2 ranked team in the country at the time).

That same year, Miami toasted us 61-0 followed by Virginia Tech rolling us 50-0. Pitt beat us 42-0 that year and we LOST TO TEMPLE 30-5! The next year featured a 40-0 loss to WVU and a 42-0 loss to Notre Dame. Let's not forget losing to Navy 54-21 in 2004 either. I'm all chocked up. I miss those days man!
