Seriously...OSU does this to us all the time. We work a recruit for YEARS and then 2 weeks before signing day the Suckeyes roll out of bed and decide to offer said kid.

Later that day, they decommit. I wish I had a dollar for every time it happened to us.

As a WVU fan, the only school I miss from the Big East is you guys.

God I miss y'all. And not just the 73 point wins and 17 game winning streak. I spent many childhood summers on the Shore. Learned a lot of puppy love angst from Jersey girls from 70-75or so. I even miss the Guido of the week posts every year we played. I was actually happy to are you guys get the Big 10 invite. A little surprised until I recalled how Rutgers owned the NYC market. 14 million hard core RU fans can't be wrong. I do wish y'all would look a little closer at our B12 record and especially our rushing numbers. We should finally actually compete for the conference football title this year or next. The National Player of the Year from a couple years back will QB us next year. That should help. But this year's offense should be pretty good too. When do you guys see RU winning the B10? I ask that sincerely. I'd love to see the old BE kick butt everywhere but the ACC. FREAKING TRAITORS. You are correct about us not recruiting NJ any more. We've moved back into PA,VA,MD, OH,GA,TN and TX. Our QB is a CA kid.And ,of course, we still pick up a lot of speed in FL. Even have a couple WV kids. No offense but the Big Ten teams are literally swimming in money because of the TV deal, RU will be as well. If you think the money situation for Big 12 teams is better than Big Ten teams you're poorly mistaken.

Oh come on. I have over 20 teeth left and I don't bother to even light a fire unless it's squirrel season. WVU has invested nearly a half BILLION with a B in new school and athletic facilities in just the past 3 years. The football stadium will be nearly brand new when it's finished next year. With our tier three tv rights and the B12 money we're getting over 38 million a year for our sports teams. Maybe more when you add in the NCAA basketball money. That's a good bit more than the old BE and the new AAC conference. By about 35 million dollars.
And lastly, neither my wife nor my girlfriend's are kin to me. Best I can tell anyway. Although this one little smoking hot redhead does have a lot of the same kinky sexual proclivities I do. As a WVU fan this happens to us all the time with kids from Florida and Ohio, We offer a kid early, and get a commitment, then after several targets above the kid we recruited turns down schools they jump on our commitment. We lose kids to Ohio State, Florida State and the Gators this way.

I don't think it was a setup to make Rutgers look bad. Stills jumped at an offer then moved on when his dream school woke up and made an offer.

Glad to see some of the Hillbillies remembering how it used to be against Rutgers .
I for one consider those games as showing how much improvement RU had to make to be considered a good program.
Rutgers has shown it can improve and I'd welcome a rematch or even better : RU & WV sign up for a series of H&H games ( 3 at each home) spread out over 12 years.

I'm sure some Mountaineer fans wouldn't mind seeing that .
I don't hold a grudge over the losses Rutgers had in BE play to WV because at the time WV was considered one of the better FB programs in the nation and RU was far from one but improving from what it once was.

Hopefully the Hillbillies that are talking smack here won't have to put up , much longer, with the way the better B-12 programs look down on them and Big 12 fans wish Louisville was a member instead.
Maybe Darius will help make WV great again, the Mountaineers seem to need all the help they can get when trying to get fans of other B-12 schools to feel West Virginia is an asset to that conference and it was not a mistake inviting them.

Since becoming members of the Vitamin conference WV hasn't set the B-12 on fire.
Hopefully the couch burners will have something to smile about when setting their couches aflame like the good old BE days did.

1) Rutgers ascention into the B1G combined with the hiring of Ash, has really helped Rutgers recruit, thus hurting other schools including West Virginia.(getting pummelted in the Big12 and revenues/gate may even be down (they are used to winning teams).
WVU in the past has relied on Jersey recruits -I'm from Bridgewater so Tom Gray and Wayne Brown of Somerville (1979,1980 come to mind). Haver also become acquainted with Curlin Beck from, those years but he wasn't from NJ I believe.

WVU also depends on the malcontent spoiled kids of Jerseyeans for their student body. WVU is a safety school for many a not so good New Jersey student (I'm sure there are a few good ones in the mix-over the years most alumni whom Ive met had good experences ).

2) Now, you have Stills who probably is so (disappontingly?) bad that Rivals had him 2 stars. He has no 1-A offer until RU and desp[ite from a Mountineer family -and coincidentally a 4-star brother-Stils has no WVU offer-until Rutgers...

3) Stills gets his Rutgers offer-and amazingly decommits within a few hours of his RU offer-to WVU-who probably has followed Stills since Pop Warner.

Since when has WVU relied on Jersey kids? We rely on Florida, Ohio, Maryland, PA, other southeast states like GA..... NJ is way down the list. We still do just fine in all those states.

Our revenue is at an all time high. That's not the problem in the Big 12.

WVU is 33-4 all time and won 17 in a row against Rutgers. I dont think we're too concerned with making Rutgers look bad.

You're acting like WVU is just terrible these days. We just won 8 games including our bowl in a season where we had one of the hardest schedules in program history. Played 4 top 15 teams in a 5 week span... 3 of them on the road.

Didn't Rutgers just go 4-8 and 1-7 in conference play? The one common opponent we had last year was Maryland. We beat them 45-6 and you lost 46-41.

I have no problem with RU or your fans. Always enjoyed playing you guys. This post was just too stupid not to reply to though.

...pretty much agreed. The original theory is definitely a bit 'out there', especially since Rutgers and WVU are in 2 different leagues with WVU not even really recruiting the Northeast much anymore.

Joe, given Rutgers is now in the B1G its THAT more important that WVU prevent other schools from poaching in state players-RU already recruits Maryland and Delaware.

I may have made a few WVU wisecracks but for the past bunch of years pre BIG12
the Mountaineers won and won fairly constantly. Given expansion the schools had to make a move that was less than optimal. They now find their football program to be an average program in a top league (Not as prestigious as the B1G on the East Coast) with not just Rutgers but MARYLAND improving their recruiting and fan base. My bet is that Mountaineer fans aren't as happy as they used to be.

WVU depends on national recruiting more than ever now. Not such a good thing. Ive heard some good things about WVU but in all honesty look at rankings-it's an average AT BEST academic school in West Virginia. If you are a 4 or 5 star player for the most part you can name your school. A ton of top academic ACC schools with beautiful campuses are just hours away. Why WVU (probably recent winning tradition and staff the most impt factor-and the prior has fallen off)?

To say that the WVU football staff was sleeping on a legacy kid with a 4 star brother to me is to insult the Mountaineer football staff. Especially in this day of Internet (player) marketing they long ago knew of Stills. Someone in Morgantown got scared of RU or just wanted to make Rutgers look bad (remind some of Flood and last year?) and decided to use the commitment to their advantage. **This player and his family are so pro WVU and con the WVU radar that I'm sure they knewcwherecthey were n the eyes of the Mountaneer staff.
Akin to Rutgers making some sacrifices when they entered the B1G I can easily see the WVU coaching staff saying (...as a two star recruit) "We're interested in you and will offer but only if you have an offer from a 1-A school/Rutgers, yada). OR "how about doing the staff a favor with some negative recruiting." OR "We're a bit concerned about Rutgers, Maryland and the B1G-how about doing us a favor and checking out the Ash recruiting process in order to optimize our recruiting process."

WVU (like RU to an extent) isn't a top rated school and I don't think that many say "hey, I want to go to college in West Virginia-ditto to a lesser extent NJ (I HAVE heard good thngs from alum about Morgantown).
THUS West Virginia (like Rutgers did with Schiano to a lesser? extrent) relies on their winning tradition and coaching staff's rep to recruit. (and frankly even as a non athlete I know WVU to be both a safety school and a school OVERALL with a less competitive academic base-let's face it but not all football players care about academcs andc just wantv to remain eligible).

To summarize all of my posts I think the WVU football staff (who relies on history, and recent success to recruit-ditto history). has its eyes on Maryland/RU, the B1G and Stills''s 4 star brother. Someone on staff made the decision that it was a bad idea for Stills to land at RU (with a big recruiting upside-remember RU was Rivals top 15 for 2017 already) and to prevent by offering (or in comnjunction with legacy Dad-spy on the RU recruiting procesds or just make RU look bad (negative recruiting. Everyone here Always complains about Harbaugh-wel otherv schools can-and do-similar.

Regardless- Rutgers does not look bad in this case no matter how you look at it and there was no conspiracy. It would be much different if the kid was in-state or had been committed for a while.

1) DS may have some skills of his own but let's face it, everyone is looking at him as a 2for1 package.
2) He is a WVU legacy and had been begging for an offer
3) He did not have an offer when we offered and he committed
4) It is obvious that this woke WVU up who I believe thought DS would not get ANY P5 offers and that they could get him as a PWO
5) Kid got what he always dreamed of...can't blame him

This will play out just fine with almost everyone. Yeah, we would love to be first in line for his brother but they are WVU legacy and it isn't like we play them anymore. It becomes just another 4 star kid from another state. DS will get 4 years of schooling at WVU and a front row seat to see his brother play.

FLknight -indeed we may not be used to this but in case you missed this was (with Dad a former major player for the Mountaineers and brother a 4+ star recruit) a family with such Mountaineer blood that you wonder about inbreeding (I used that term in the past to refer to both long term athletic and academic families at my UNC, NC St, yada). This is a kid that would likely have signed late elsewhere if he thought he had no other options (maybe this was the case)-not commit and decommitt within a few hours. Too suspicious for me.

Was saying just the opposite. We should be used to this, as any fan who is paying attention has seen this happen numerous times and not just here. Idrizi did the same thing when he got a Boston College offer, which was always his goal. You may see it as suspicious, but I see it as a new norm in recruiting.
