I would cut that C off my jersey and pin it on Dylan, and say “Let’s go dude, it’s your team”.

I 200%would

Hopefully ALL of his minutes will go to Grant and he will return to DNP status, like he did in our best all around effort of the year against a good opponent.
It was absolutely our best rotation and game. What do you think of my comment Zap? I think it’s a ballsy message to send…

As far as Martini’s Captaincy goes, he may be strong of character and leadership qualities and it’s likely killing him he can’t contribute.
There’s no need to make him feel worse about himself and have him feel like he should rip the C off his jersey.
I’m not mad at the kid, I feel bad for him, he shouldn’t be playing….but that’s it imo.

Crazy thing is, regardless of his minutes, his stats read like a DNP already.

I didn’t say strip him of it I said IF I was him I would give it Dylan as additional motivational gesture to the team

I understand SBP, I just don’t see it as an inspirational, motivating gesture.
I mean, you did say you he should “cut the C off his jersey” that’s pretty rough for a young man.

Harsh and uncalled for. That doesn't sound like a guy who believes we are "in". It sounds like a guy that is coming to the realization that this season is going up in smoke.

This is on Pike, not Martini.
I don't think its on Pike at all...The guy had his opportunity, right?
I'm not giving up on season yet for sure, but I'm saying if I were in a position like that I might just take one for the team, that's all. It's not for everyone I get it. But the writing is very clearly on the wall the guy should not be playing more than a couple minutes to give someone a breather...Hey, you get paid, that's the reality.

Martini's play is what it is. But his ineffectiveness could be seen a mile away even before he set foot in New Brunswick. Not a Big Ten player. Not even really a basketball player. The recruiting miss on Pike. As well as lack of discipline of team generally and poor coaching.

Being a captain of a team goes far beyond the field of play.
Yes and Zap has it right too. He can still be a leader without receiving as much playing time. But it also depends on whether or not the guys on the floor are receptive to that leadership.

All that said, it makes sense to get Grant more time because we are already starting to look towards the future. Yes, I know he can always leave, but let’s see what we have and then determine what we would need to do to keep him.

This! Martini seems like a great kid. It's not his fault that he is either not good enough to play at this level or doesn't fit this team. Pike is the one who recruited him and convinced him to come to Rutgers.

Perfect response. You have character. Put a "C' in your avatar Dale.

Wasn't the kid from Sweden (Oscar Palmquist) our captain last year? Maybe sitting on the bench and waiting your turn to contribute is real leadership. C on the chest and butt in the chair maybe just right.

Everyone says Oskar was a good, high character dude. I actually liked his shooting stroke a lot, wish we ran some sets to get him better looks.

I think it's just weird this year because Martini is a transfer, and I guess our whole team is transfers so who knows.

Have you ever sat down and spoken with the kid for even 30 seconds? My guess is all you know about him is what you see on game days. He needs a system to be effective. Princeton gave him structure and he contributed within that system. He’s not a good match for RU. We can probably all agree on that, but don’t think for a minute that makes him less of a leader. He continues to serve as a wonderful role model for the team on and off the court. This thread is unnecessary and a tad nasty.
