If You Hate the Scoreboard Noise, Contact PJ Mullen

al, if Rutgers athletics shot dog turds out of the t-shirt cannons into the crowd, you would think that is great too. It is great you are so enthusiastic about everything Rutgers does (and Penn State, and Illinois, and Indiana, and Syracuse-and you continue to broadcast on this board about how great those schools have it to tell recruits to go there). Maybe this is dependent on the sections people sit in, and such complaints should not be ignored. You do realize that by turning a deaf ear and a blind eye to complaints that "customers" will go elsewhere? That is where we are 95% likely headed. We have club seats, and we are in the last year of a large annual donation to athletics. Our name is on the plaque in the RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center. But we are just whiners who should shut up and go away. We will.
An organization should always listen to its customers and then do its best to accommodate them.

What year did this onslaught on our ears begin? I'm sure it was within the past five years or so. I've been going to games since my freshman year in 2005 and I don't ever remember anyone saying in the 15 or so years before this nonsense that the PA music wasn't loud enough and that the band plays too often.
I think about 5 years back is when it started. It wasn't a constant thing back then, but it became both louder and more constant over the subsequent 3 years (I stopped going to games the last 2).

This season, in both FB and MBB games being televised over varying networks, it seems like things have become even louder and more unrelenting because, prior to this season, the stadium/arena sounds weren't nearly so prominent. This televised perception could be how the networks are mixing or otherwise processing the sound. But it seems a bit too coincidental that ALL of the networks are changing that all in the same way at the same time.

And people who are at the games are reporting that it's grown worse this season. So...

I'm not sure if it's worse this season than last season, but this is at least the 3rd year of it being very bad. At least they finally stopped playing Click Click Boom literally 20+ times a game.

definitely a trend in the last 10 years but looks like worse since PJ came aboard...and also at the RAC changed atmosphere now since he has been hired.

This board is not representative of the fan base, especially students. Show me some data and I'll concede the point. Until then I'll keep arguing for sport, as it's at least a little amusing to see how many twisted panties there are... and I'm not above a little trolling given how hard I get trolled around here.
completely clueless

It's been discussed ad nauseam already, but I'll take a good R-U or Bells Must Ring chant over the blasted horn and "hype" playlist SHI blasts out any day of the week.
no more bells must ring when hoops team comes out...now its bring em out bring em out and 6 minutes of terrible rap music. Also bells must ring might only get played once a game as dance music crap dominates the soundspeaker

No question the RAC has gone more the way of the pro arena the last couple of seasons. Other than the rare The Bells Must Ring, and the R-U-T-G-E-R-S song it seems the pep band rarely even plays these games. No bueno indeed.

I will add however, that the incessant Jersey Mike's PA playlists probably has a lot to do with the constant fan cams. Hard to catch fans dancing and primping to the pep band.

When I was a student (2005-08) football seasons, the simplicity was what worked. We leaned into gameday elements that were unique to Rutgers:
  • "First down, touchdown, GO RU!" on EVERY 1st down
  • For Whom the Bell Tolls" on EVERY 3rd down
  • "It is 3rd down....and 7" from Joe Nolan, no screaming
  • One standard version of "The Bells Must Ring" played after every score each year
  • The cannon
  • Chilling R...U... chants, even with 30K in the building
Sure, there was piped in music and when done right, made for some of the most memorable moments at that place. 44,114 singing "We Will Rock You" in unison on 11/9/06 gave me goosebumps.

But i don't know what's going on now. I live in FL now, so I only attend 1-2 games/year, but it comes through just as obnoxious on tv. I watch a good amount of football on Saturdays and nobody else's noise (not crowd noise, just noise) stands out as much as RU's. Maybe I'm hypersensitive to it, but I don't think so.

I will say that I did attend the Washington game this year and thought everything about that experience was big time. But more often than not, give the crowd a chance to think.

This x1000!!!

I graduated in 2006 and absolutely agree. It is a very very different vibe at SHI now. I used to get goosebumps from the R—-U—— chants. Now, they barely even happen.

There is something about organic fan noise that makes the in-game experiences special. That has vanished at SHI….and is now starting to change Jersey Mikes.

Hoping something changes before it’s too late.

I was late to the game this week. Got stuck in traffic on River road…approaching the stadium. Team entrance began and it was practically shaking the car windows. No need to roll them down, heard every ounce of that disjointed entrance from inside the car. In fact, my son could hear the horse entrance video as we were coming off the ramp from 18. The volume is probably at a point where RU is doing damage to ears.

100%. I’ve had to cover my ears multiple times the past few years because of the noise level and I’m in my mid 30s.

Which is ironic because Rutgers tries to be at the forefront with everything related to health or public safety and they are literally causing harm to their fans by blasting us out of our seats with $hitty music and sound effects for 3-4 straight hours. And now it’s carried over into basketball for 2-3 hours.

Also ironic that @RU848789 doesn’t care about the health and safety of the students, children and fans at the games considering his background and stance on other health related topics but in his defense his hearing is probably severely impaired from his club days in the 80’s - 90’s.

RU doesn’t care if you, me or anyone else hates the noise levels and/or volume. The levels are what they want them to be and they will sell tickets to fans who like or tolerate it. As a consumer your options are down to purchase tickets or not.

Might be true. But this thread is picking up a little bit of steam, maybe someone notices. On the flip side, how many who like/don't mind the music/noise would stop attending if they were toned down or almost eliminated? How many people have the deciding factor whether they attend or not to be the music/entertainment in between play? I mean, the people attending are there to watch a football game, not get blasted out with whatever they are doing. If Rutgers doesn't see they will lose ticket holders over this they tone deaf (kind of like the fans who are getting deaf). So we can all just be deaf together now.

I’ve responded with the same or similar response in the weekly survey for 3 years. Top priority addressing game day production second noise level in section. Asked for rep to get back to me. Took 1 1/2 years for them to get back to me. Told them we have lost many season ticket holders in my section and within my group to the incessant noise issue and game day production. The agents response was that is the #1 complaint from the survey and his interactions with season ticket holders.

I also discussed this with Hobbs at an event. His response is that they are working on it. That was 2 years ago.

I have never seen someone be so consistently wrong and be so smug and arrogant about their opinion at the same time than @RU848789 Although @RU4Real takes the cake but I think that guy quit the board.

I’m wondering whether the noise levels are what they are because the sound levels have to reach the north end of the stadium. I sit midfield, so the sound is appropriate for me, but I could understand how if people sit closer to the scoreboard, the sound might be unbearable for them.

The solution would be to place a similar scoreboard at the North End of the Stadium, so that you wouldn’t have to blast the South Endzone scoreboard.

Next September, we can use a decibel meter to measure sound levels near the South Endzone, midfield, and the North Endzone.

Both persons can be arrogant, and I doubt either has a problem admitting that. Neither are smug, in my opinion. Both of them are also among the most intelligent and well-reasoned people I’ve known.

I have no problem with people’s arrogance, when it’s supported by ability or accomplishment, as it is with them. But that’s just me.

Also, #s is clearly messing with us a bit ITT and has already said that he doesn’t really care about the sound, the implication being that he wouldn’t really have an issue with it being a bit quieter either. So I;m not really sure how that makes his posts arrogant, in this thread. I think contrarian is more accurate.

Or am I being too arrogant for seeking accuracy in how we describe our behavior? 😀

I sit in the north end and it's too loud. Cannot imagine how bad it is in the south or midfield.

I didn't know you were their attorney.

I just can’t get behind these threads.
Sure , if you don’t like it email him or do whatever you want with tickets and donations. But no need to call the guy out on here .

Why not?
Plenty of people have emailed him their opinions, and Rutgers is asking for their opinions, yet nothing has been done

Furthermore, it is ruining peoples game day experiences, and as the paying customer, we have every right to voice our displeasure, especially if Rutgers asking us to do so, nothing has been done

And it’s gotten worse. It’s gotten louder, more disjointed, and incessant. It’s almost like he’s taking our suggestions and done the exact opposite.

Because it just seems weird to go after a guy’s livelihood like that . It’s not like he’s a coach, GM or getting NIL. Probably most of our players have a better compensation package than him. Just another middle class dude trying to survive

Guilty as charged on all counts, lol. And yes, I'm messing a bit, as I said earlier, as I just kind of find it a little annoying that so much attention and so many threads are devoted to this topic. I simply don't care more than a tiny bit about this stuff. I wouldn't care if they played opera and showed Teletubbies videos on the screen, as long as we win.

This is for skoolie. I'm also not verifiably "wrong" in questioning whether this board represents the fanbase. Obviously, there's little doubt this board skews heavily towards wanting more band/less volume, but I'm not convinced that's the way most fans think, although I could obviously be wrong on that. However, I can't be "wrong" in my opinion that the music isn't too loud for me or that I don't want more band music. That's how opinions work.

And, pursuant to my previous comment in this thread and similar to Schiano’s coaching acumen on Saturday, both were complete dog shit

Greg needs to worry about coaching, and PJ needs to realize we’re not The Cult, and don’t want to be like The Cult
Shelby despises the HC we’re stuck with but has no issue whatsoever with the game day non-football experience, music, etc. Nobody should care which schools are copied from. That’s not a good reason to dislike ..,
