Illinois is a true barometer game

Disagree. I think many here are seriously underestimating just how good the D's, and even the O's, we've played to date are (Wash, Mich, OSU). I'm not a huge fan of our talent at this point - obviously - but even I think we'll be a lot more competitive the rest of the season. A lot of this is "relative" thus far.
I hope you're right. The fans definitely deserve better especially from the competitive viewpoint.

Deserve, yes, but not sure it should have been expected. The killer here is the following IMHO:

- if Laviano hits Harris on one of 2 easy TD's plays, both in the 1st half IIRC, and...
- he makes the pitch to Harris for the easy TD

....a lot of the talk today, despite the 2 blowouts, would have been avoided.

Actually, that's the point of the OP. When you have similar talent, you can judge the staff. To criticize the staff for getting beat downs from Washington, OSU, and UM is a bit histrionic. We are about on the level of Iowa but if we lose more starters, not so much. So watch these next 3 games for clues to what we will look like in 4 years.
I was a bit facetious. You mentioned judging staff and you mentioned Iowa. After Iowa, pretty sure some here shouted down any rational discussion re: current staff. It would be nice to get to that place, will it be allowed this year at all?

I would guess if we don't win 1 of the next 3, it will be all we talk about. If we win 2 of 3, the air will be fresher than a Glade factory. If we beat PSU--Coach of the Year!

No and we shouldn't. Judging a staff based on a few games is silly. Almost as silly as people who post end of the world scenarios after one series. I don't think you can really begin to have that discussion until after the season, after signing day, and next spring. How would you have evaluated Flood 6 games in? How do you evaluate him now? Last week people were all over Durkin's jock. Now he gets crushed by PSU and is about to get into a real schedule.

Illinois is an untalented and poorly coached football team. Don't be fooled by the last two games. The Rutgers team that played against Iowa will beat Illinois by at least two touchdowns. Now, that doesn't mean we are going to a bowl, a conclusion some on this board will immediately jump to tat the conclusion of the Illinois game, but it does mean we are not in as bad a shape as many on this board would lead us to believe. We are a B1G bottom feeder, but we are competitive with the other bottom feeders, we are not the worst team in the conference.

I think when your players step on the field on sunday it will be like the other team is moving in slow motion. illinois doesn't have anywhere close to the speed of us or _ichigan.
Just beat them for Ash is all I ask

and your reason for this is what, just because you are a RU fan. Right now Purdue, Illinois and RU are the three worst teams in the league..bottom feeders. Tell me how we are not. Illinois played Nebraska tough so sort of matches with RU playing Iowa tough and Nebraska is better than Iowa. RU is just as untalented and poorly prepared as Illinois. I see this game as two bad teams that are going to struggle for any wins in this league. Its a must win for both coaches and programs to gain any tractin in recruiting.

Iowa is 4-2 and should have beaten both NW and ND State. Illinois has not played anywhere near the schedule we have. Our four loses are to teams with a combined record of 21-2, please, Illinois has lost to Purdue, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Western Michigan. Everybody needs to calm down, Illinois is a very bad team, we will destroy them.

Good luck
Nothing has changed for me. I assumed we would be 2-4 here. Maybe 3-3. Yes we got crushed. They scored 50 against PSU...with the nitts having 5 yards of offense at halftime.
Look at what OSU did to Oklahoma. UW scored 70 against Oregon. Etc etc. I watch a lot of college football and I haven't seen anything from the next 6 teams to think it will be any different than Iowa. We could win 4 or 5....we could lose 4 or 5.

Sorry BAC i don't think Illinois is very good, of course we need to get a few first downs this game.

A few things.

Over the long run, the vast majority of coaches end up getting canned. So we more/less know how this story ends. The question is, how do we pass the time between now and then?

I like the silly. I like the unhinged. I like the one series hair on fire in game threads. Endless entertainment. But, let's say I agree with you, no more irrational discussion (as boring and impossible as that thought is). If there is also no rational discussion until vkj gives say so, what exactly is the point of this site?

John, you heard the man, just shut her down until next May.

This is right. We've been fighting above our weight class the last two weeks.

Illinois is in it.

I was responding to a direct question. Context is important.

I think I agree. They they'll look like they're in slow motion and the windows will seem huge. We'll also magically be able to get off blocks and do a better job blocking.

Big problem with the OSU and UM games are that we could not get off blocks quick enough.

Umm, ok. So, we got a No on the rational discussion re: current staff for the rest of this year. Checkarooski. Looking forward the best pizza in NJ threads.

You can talk about it all you like but that's not a rationale discussion. There simply isn't enough data to support a conclusion either way. Did you start picking out your China pattern after your first date with your wife?

Fine with me. I like pizza.

No one is, or at least no one should be coming to a final conclusion as to how good a coach Ash ultimately will be.

But it would be nice if we could discuss Coach within the context of where we now sit, and yeah that does include the talent level.

Yeah, imo specifically Mich and OSU but Wash as well, supremely talented and GREAT coaching. I mean Meyer is an all time college coach. Harbaugh may very well be one as well.

Can't disagree with this. -You and UM are just on a completely different level in terms of overall team speed, and I think the only loss either of you will have in the regular season is the team that loses when you play each other.

Lets see we scored 7 points vrs Iowa(who is not that good) zero vrs OSU,Zero vrs Michigan..what makes anyone think we can run the ball, our only offensive option, with a QB who has no run threat in a power spread vrs anyone left on the Schedule? EVERY team left will just run blitz and the result will be the same no points,no wins the rest of the season in this offense set. Bye the way the defense is slowly losing players weekly due to the inept production of Meherringers offense he continues to run, with RBs now switching to defense backfield...again.

One issue is that Rutgers won't be putting the same team on the field this week as they did against Iowa. Due to injuries, the team that will take the field on Saturday will be at least a notch or two worse than the one three weeks ago.

This is true, and tells you how little talent this team has. Two guys go down and the team looks noticeably worse, and neither one was the starting QB.

People that think we are gonna destroy Illinois are in for a real shock

People that are saying they are terrible and we win easily are pretty misguided because Rutgers is underdogs at home!!!

Our defense is depleted we are onto the 6th, 7th, and 8th string likebackers

Our offense cant move the ball...

Dont forget an NFL coach that was in the Super Bowl

This is not a true barometer game at all and i think we lose this game as well

This will be like RU vs Temple about 20 years ago, the battle for worst team in conference.

We lost 2 good starters on defense and our best offensive player. Hopefully Hester and/or Hampton are back but it doesn't sound good if Hicks is being moved to safety.

I think we run the ball effectively against Illinois but I also think we struggle on defense because we are so undermanned. I think the spread is fair and I think it's a close game.

That goes for most teams at this level half way through the season. None of the schools we have coming up are OSU. They also have drop offs between their starters and backups.

Who has been saying we would kill them?
