" In Camden, Development Projects Kindle Hope"

Interesting stuff. I am not getting my hopes up, but it would be nice for the area in general if Camden were to become less of a blight.

One thing I noticed was that Subaru was moving its HQ to Camden. Aren't they in or around Cherry Hill now? Doesn't seem like much of a change for them, but they are getting a huge tax incentive.

Subaru is now in Cherry Hill along Route 70. There will not be any new jobs created, but having Subaru in Camden will certainly help the property tax base there. The key, though, is to make Camden more livable so that it attracts new residents.

So was Cooper Hospital going to relocate across the Delaware if they didn't get this subsidy?

Srru86, I don't understand your comment. The project has nothing to do with Cooper Hospital. Rather, it is an attempt to revive Camden. North Jersey gets the same subsidy for similar projects all the time, and Sweeney got the law changed to make it possible for South Jersey projects to get it. Just because Sweeney did it doesn't make it terrible.

FWIW, RU and NB are benefiting from similar tax credits (via DEVCO). Camden deserves the same shot as central jersey and north jersey urban locations.

While it would never be a Jersey City type location, being right across the river from Philly should be a positive for Camden. It is actually a great location for a city, but unfortunately the changing economic conditions in the late 1900's devastated the area and inept (and corrupt) politicians have only made things worse since then. I think it would be great for South Jersey and all of New Jersey for Camden to be improved.

Apologies, referring to a different recent EDA grant.

Star Ledger
Cooper Hospital, Subaru nab millions in tax breaks to expand in Camden

Now Subaru most certainly could have gone across the River. That would have been bad for all of us. But the reasonable question is does paying the corporations to move jobs from Pennsauken to Camden advance the general good? I grant it might, but this is awfully expensive.

Certainly NOT South Jersey specific. See Panasonic getting similar support to move from the Meadowlands to Newark.

But was Cooper Hospital going to Philly? Of course not. Should we subsidize hospitals? Of course and NJ does, quite a bit. But this is a big pay day for a particular hospital. It might be worth it in the end, but also worth asking the question.

Agreed, but when public funds flow to entities controlled by Norcross we need to follow the money.

Not sure I understand a lot of your post. The old tax formula made it impossible for South Jersey projects to qualify. The new one does. And please stick to the topic.

p.s. the aid to Cooper flows out of a belief that Camden, like Philadelphia, can be restored through a strategy of "ed and meds." Whether this strategy is right or not, it's the basis for a lot of the aid to Camden institutions. It has nothing to do with trying to prevent the hospital from moving out..
