First let me say that with each passing day I become more and more a fan of your new Head Mens Basketball Coach. I personally have never met him or at least I do not remember meeting him. But after talking to friends involved in HS, AAU, and College basketball I have come to the conclusion you guys have the right coach now baby!!! In fact many say they are surprised he was still available because he really is a winner on and off the court. I have heard he is caring, warm, and sincere in all he does. He is respectful to all around him from players to parents, yet he will push players and staff to be successful.

Let me also give you a story I heard from one friend. When your coach was appointed head coach at Stony Brook a personal friend of mine called him seeking employment despite not having references or a relationship with your coach. In fact he barely knew your coach. Please understand my friend was at one time an in demand D1 Assistant and mentor to Shoes as well. Your new coach actually was the only coach out of many who called my friend back to be encouraging though he had his staff in place already. He did not need to do that but being the professional he is, he did it without having a second thought. Says a lot about this guy!! He might not be the life of the party telling jokes etc. But he surely is what the Doctor Ordered for Rutgers. I also say things happen for a reason! This guy really is ideal to turn RU around and I for one look forward to attending a game at the RAC next season!

Now lets talk Shoes! Duke and Carolina might not need Shoes or coaches like him based on them being programs that select kids and not recruit them. In other words they select who they want not convince kids to want them. Ditto Kentucky, Kansas, etc. Even St. Johns could do this under Louie C years ago. But if you need to get with blue chip recruits you better have the right guy who can open doors for the head coach to enter and complete the deal. There are not many better at this than Shoes. Not sure if he will be retained but if he is you will see him help close deals on kids who would not have considered Rutgers in the past. Shoes is that tenacious tiger of a recruiter who gets it done by going the extra yard. This guy along with the coach you have in place would be nothing short of outstanding and many do not want to see this happen because it would mean a new basketball giant in the northeast. Please also note I gave Shoes hell when he was the Head Coach of FDU because I felt he got that job based on connections while the Associate HC Ron Brown deserved the job. Plus Shoes is a career big-time assistant or Associate HC and not a Head Coach at this time.

I have known Shoes since he was 20 years old and a student at Bergen Community College and a member of the Dyckman College Division team I coached in Harlem in various tournaments where we had to threaten him to compete harder! And compete he did often out playing players with super press clippings attending high level D1 colleges! Shoes had game on the court and has game off the court which is why he is such a great recruiter!

JMHO!!!

Thx LF. Hope we keep shoes. We need a tireless recruiter like him on staff.

I for one appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I must say it was disappointing reading your earlier evaluation about the hire, but I'm encouraged by your positive outlook based on what you have seen and heard since then. It also says something about you that you're willing to say you re-evaluated your position and no longer agree with your initial take... Some would just dig in their heels.

I really want Shoes to stay here because we need someone with his recruiting ability. However, no one is saying anything about
his coaching ability. Should we give up Shoes to take someone with much better coaching ability?

Keep the Shoe! I don't know him, but I do think he's an excellent recruiter, and I would like to have a little continuity with this program for the kids' sake.

Great post, agree 100%. Keep Shoes!

It's Pikiell's call. I'm behind him 100% with or without Shoes.

I feel encouraged that Pikiell has stressed the importance of his staff and openly stated that he's going to take his time to make sure he gets it right. If Gary Waters took that approach he might still be coaching at Rutgers today.

Gary Waters had two very good coaches (D & Mance) and one awful coach (Heck). Plus I'll always continue to rave about Carr running the program. If the Hill thing would have not been a setup, and a guy who could recruit like Hill was there as the lead assistant, things may have actually worked well for Waters. Waters was a great instructive coach. Really knew what he was talking about on the court. His personality just didn't lend as much to recruitment, and so he needed a strong group behind him.

I will always wonder if Freddie was brought in just to help Gary improve the team instead of replacing him, would RU have suffered like it has or became a constant NCAA participant.
I think the combination of Waters getting the most out of his players and Hill bringing in good players would have turned the RU MBB program into a constant winner that we could count on making the tourney.

I have always thought Gary was a good coach, but really couldn't recruit enough talent to make RU a program that would be a constant winner and Hill has proven to be a top recruiter everywhere he goes, so that combo would have been what the doctor ordered if their parring was used right and not the way it was used .
What could have been a winning combination was turned into a dysfunctional partnership because of the reason Fred Hill Jr. was hired and RU has been paying for that mistake ever since.

LFBall,
Can you throw out some assistant coach names that we have a shot at who would be great at Rutgers?

LF, have always valued your input dating back to when you were a regular contributor to the RU board, and hope that you will continue to comment on what we expect to be a renaissance for RU basketball. As for Shoes, you certainly mount a strong defense for keeping him, but will trust in our AD and coach to do what is best for the team.
