Iowa Fan here seeking advice

Why not? It's a beautiful campus and it's so close. Might as well see the two best NJ schools while you're here.

Because I would prefer that the out of town visitors spend their money at establishments in and around New Brunswick. The local businesses deserve our support and should be the ones that benefit from the increase in away team fans.

It's one thing to recommend to someone from Iowa to take in NYC or the Jersey shore but other than that lets keep them near campus.

lol Princeton is nicer than New Brunswick. If friends of mine asked where to stay before a game, I would suggest Princeton. Especially if they're in the 30-60 range.

If spend any significant amount of time in Princeton you run the risk of getting some of it on you.

Actually 2 of them went to a Princeton game last year (A cousin played DB for Princeton). Thanks for all the great suggestions, it's good to have Rutgers in the BIG. I'm certain Iowa will travel well to RU. We had 12-15,000 at Maryland in '14. A lot will be Iowa grads/fans that now live on the East Coast.

I'd think after last years success you guys will be showing up in large numbers everywhere.

I see 3 games this year being sell outs in Iowa, Michigan, and PSU. Fortunately for visitors there are always a large # of Rutgers fans willing to give up their tickets for a profit.

beans 33, something not mentioned here. You probably realize that our campus is more urban than other B1G schools. RU has 5 campuses in the New Brunswick area: (1) Busch-this is where the football stadium is located--it is the least urban of the area campuses and primarily is home to the colleges of engineering and pharmacy, as well as our medical school and other athletic facilities; (2) Livingston-this is where the RAC (our basketball facility) and baseball facilities are located, as well as our business school. Some consider this our campus of the future, where the newer buildings have a modern look; (3) College Avenue- across the Raritan River from the Busch Campus, this is considered our "main" campus and the actual location of the first collegiate football game. This is where the frats and sorororities are located, and where you will find the bars and restaurants, most of which are on Easton Ave, Somerset Street and George Street. Our Zimmerli Art museum is on this campus, as well as Kirkpatrick Chapel, which are worth a visit. There is also a good Geology museum on the main campus; (4) Douglass Campus and (5) Cook Campus--these two campuses are often referred to together as Cook/Douglass. Douglass was an all women's college, and Cook is our agricultural school. Visitors from the midwest sometimes wonder why NJ is called the Garden State. There is a working farm on Cook Campus, as well as our Food Science research building. Visit this area, in particular the Passion Puddle, as this is probably the most beautiful area of the New Brunswick area campuses.

There is a great writeup in the Columbus, Ohio newspaper:

If you have not had one already, be sure to have a pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich for breakfast, with salt, pepper ketchup. We invented pork roll, and we are damn proud of it.

In New Brunswick there is a vibrant night life, in Princeton not so much. For a Princeton Ivy League game , its fine, for a Rutgers game stay at the Heldrich , walk to Clydz, Tumultys, the college bars on Easton Ave, etc etc.
I'd say do both. I mean they're so close you could do both in the same night. I love New Brunswick and it certainly has some nice establishments and has a lot to do. I think visitors should definitely spend a night exploring New Brunswick and what it has to offer.

Princeton is gorgeous and for 30-60 year olds who aren't typically looking for college bars I think it's a perfect idea to spend a night there or to get dinner there. I'm not sure what your definition of vibrant night life is but I don't think either place is more vibrant than the other, just different atmospheres. Princeton is probably more pleasant. That's not a diss on New Brunswick, Princeton is probably one of the nicest college towns in America.

I say the more of NJ out of towners see the better. Maybe the unfair Jersey stereotype will be abolished if people could see the state as is really is.

only on the Rutgers Football board can a thread asking for tailgating and visiting advice turn into an inner squabble over where to stay and what to do.

When you put it this way...it does make perfect sense.

It's what we do.

Staying in South Plainfield with a car. Just looking for older fart places (30-60 yr old group) not the college age group. We've been to several Big 10 road venues, most have adult friendly places to drink and semi trash talk. Jersey Shore could be intriguing. Tailgate/parking lot suggestion is essential.
As others have suggested stay at the Jersey Shore. Ocean Place in Long Branch is a good choice and you are only about 30 mins from Stadium. They are next to Pier Village which has bars / food venues and right on the ocean. Jersey wherever you stay will be a unique experience for you folks. The people here are "interesting" to say the least.

Better yet, and my last shout out for Asbury Park, there is a brand new hotel in Asbury Park called The Asbury Hotel. You will be within walking distance to great bars (The Stone Pony, Wonder Bar) and many restaurants.
There is also a Biergarten within walking distance, with a wide selection of German and European biers, brats and other German food.

The Asbury Hotel looks cool.

Yeah, these suggestions to go visit some other college campus completely boggle the mind.
Of course Ann Arbor is a nicer town than East Lansing. But I can't imagine any Spartan telling visitors to leave the Banks of the Red Cedar and visiting the land that Bo built.
