In the post-practice news conference, (at 3:00 of the linked video) Flood refused to say that Rettig would have been the starter if Laviano hadn't been suspended.

Logically, this leads one to believe that Laviano won the competition (why would you refuse to answer the question had Rettig had won the competition?).

He's not answering what ifs. It doesn't matter if lavi wasn't suspended. He messed up and now has to deal with that.

Why would Laviano act as he did if it wasn't a reaction to being told that Rettig won the quarterback battle?

Who knows - Flood may have been considering running the process out a bit further...or
He may have have been just about ready to go with Laviano and then this issue arose... or
He may have been about to go with Rettig - but wished he had a way to do that without having to make Laviano out to have 'lost' ...

Now - if for some reason he has to go to Laviano - (after a stint in the dog house) he can say 'look kid, you were almost there - take this as a chance to redeem yourself'

Rettig is smart - he now has the starting spot & knows that it is his for as long as he can make it absurd to replace him .... Rettig does not need Flood to make any pronouncements regarding the competition for the starting job -

If Laviano can't be trusted to make the right decisions off the field how can his teammates and coaches trust him to make the right decisions on the field??
I would go with the guy that shows leadership, if every thing else is equal, I would then go
with the one that didn't break the rules, Laviano made a bad decision, lack of leadership,
I would now go with Rettig, who doesn't have that one black mark yet.

Maybe Laviano WAS named the starting QB, went out with he's buddies to celebrate and lost track of time?

Carroo didn't lose his starting position and he was out as well.

If Rettig was going to be the starter, why not just say so? If Laviano was named the starter, maybe Flood decided to punish him further by delaying the announcement. Let him stew a little bit. Plus, it would be kind of awkward to name him your starter and then say, oh, by the way, he's been suspended.

Saying this in two different threads? You're trying too hard. He didn't fail a drug test or beat anybody up... please stop.

I bet this happened Sat night after scrimmage and this is why Monday's practice was closed to media. If so, no final evaluations as Rettig would have been number 1 on Monday.
