Is there ice on the Raritan?

I see a lot of ice in the Hudson from where I work in Hoboken, and was just wondering.

The Navesink is frozen solid all the way across. Expect to see the ice boats soon.

Yes, its been frozen to some extent for weeks. Pretty cool to hear the ice cracking on the Albany Street Bridge as the tide goes out while walking over - sounds like thunder almost.

The Charles (up here in Boston/Cambridge) is also completely iced over. You can walk across it. That is, if you want to head up to Boston to see the sights. Or the snow.

It may be tempting, but don't do it!! I think due to the fairly large tidal changes and the brackish nature of the water, the Raritan freezes in a very strange, inconsistent way. You might find yourself walking on a patch of thin ice between two thicker ice floes, but it's completely indiscernible from above. If you must go ice skating, I'd opt for the D&R canal or Lake Carnegie instead.

I remember my grandfather telling me one winter ( or maybe it was several, I forget) you could walk across raritan bay/river from south amboy to perth amboy. I guess this was back in the 1920s or 30s.

The Delaware is also iced over.
Not exactly. South of Trenton the river has ice but not completely frozen over. These pictures are from today about a mile from the Burlington Bristol Bridge. River rarely freezes over around here as the daily tides are extreme. About 8 feet and the water moves up and back swiftly. There are spots that get thick but the Coast Guard keeps the channel open. Above the Falls near Trenton the River freezes much more often.

This - although I don't know how safe the canal might be either.

You don't have to go back to the 20's for that. My friends and I walked all the way across Raritan bay when I was about 12 I would guess. Don't remember the year. But the weather was just like now. Think it was in January . Could only go as far as the channel near SI because they were keeping it clear for the tankers.

Was a cool adventure but thinking back was really not too bright. There were a bunch of seagulls frozen to the surface that we freed as we went. Must have hunkered down to sleep and got stuck. If my Mom had ever found out we went out there she would have beat all our asses.

Took a bunch of Cub Scouts to a Sleep Over on the Battleship New Jersey in Camden over the weekend. Staff on board said this is the most ice they have seen in 10 years.

This thread makes me think of the time a buddy and I ran on the frozen canal from that bridge near Rutgers prep all the way to the landing lane bridge. It was the winter of 97-98. Stupid thing to do, but we didn't hear even a single crack and there was a tiny 1/2 inch layer of snow so the footing was much better than the tow path.

Almost every major waterway is partially to totally frozen in this region, including many of the intracoastal waterways, bays and inlets and even including parts of LI Sound and Raritan Bay. Satellite photos are cool and some cool pics in the AmericanWx thread.

Also, for anyone south of a Philly to Asbury Park line, there will liiely be measurable snow overnight tonight into Thursday with an inch of so falling along that line and several inches from Dover, DE to Toms River and SE of that line, with advisories and warnings up. This will be a major snowmaker across much of northern MS/AL/GA/SC and most of NC, VA, DE, MD with up to a foot possible in some places.

We skated on that canal only once in my four years. A lot of fun though. Quite a few people were out there.

Major ice blocks floating in the bay down here in Ocean City. It looks pretty cool at low tide watching pass by as they float out to sea. Makes you realize how fast the tide is moving.
And ~3" of snow today in OC, per reports - always loved snow on the beach...

I would estimate that we got closer to 4 inches, and it all came down in about 4 hours.

Iceboats are out on the Navesink river today. We don't see them all that often but they are fun to watch. If anyone is old enough to have read the Hardy Boys mysteries, this is most likely the river where Frank and Joe fictitioulsy went iceboating.

On a Hardy Boys note, I'm a teacher and have a few of the older Hardy Boys books in the class. Most boys do not pick those books, but the ones that do always go back for another one. Btw, I have never seen a girl even look at the Hardy Boys books.

My mother had a picture of her older brothers in an old car parked next to the lighthouse in Raritan Bay.

Me and my gang did some crazy stuff , but I have to tip my hat. That took balls.

Just to make everybody feel a little cooler on a hot day.

It's pretty cool to be able to bring back a thread from that far back.

O.K. So there's ONE good feature of the new board.

I thought the long-term thread storage only began with the new board a few weeks ago - how did you find this thread that was last posted on in February?

Never mind - just clicked on page 28 and saw it was content from February - hadn't tried to click on the older pages yet...

I just went back as far as this board would let me....I think it was page 28....and voila...February friggin snow and ice.
Good times.

And now we see the down-side of long memories on boards.

Ice? Do we really want to relive that winter?
