Our amateur fanbase still has people that don't get it. We need 4 stars. Several of them in each class.

Our recruiting has been horrendous for a power 5 team.

To put this in perspective, OSU has about 10-15 kids with the speed & skills of Janarion Grant. That disparity can't be coached away.

I'm sure I'll get replies about how Wisconsin does it. Just stop with that. They are the rare exception.. if you think Rutgers has anywhere near the player development culture that Wisconsin has, you shouldn't be a football fan.

"Rutgers Men?" Rutgers hasn't been the kind of place that has its own brand of men for 60 years. Unless we're talking about men who consider t-shirts with the sleeves intact to be formal wear.

Tough for a 4 star with multiple offers to want to come to a last place team which gets blown out.
That's the issue

You need recruiting and development to be an elite team. One or the other will only get you so far. Wisconsin doesn't get elite players but has elite development which allows them to win 8-10 games a year but they will never be truly elite. LSU has all the talent in the world but their development is rather poor which leads to 8-10 win season but haven't been elite since 04 (07 no team was elite just a bunch of good teams). Bama and tOSU have both and it is clear to see.

Agreed. That's the ultimate problem with college football itself. The haves vs the have nots. Only the rare, dynamic uplifting coach can shift a program to the upper level. I think Coach Ash may have those qualities.. we'll see how our recruiting shapes up this year and next...

This is so true..nauseating to see grown men lapping up what Flood was serving. Ash has a good shot at changing things with recruiting
Sorry to break it to you but Ash hardly has any 4 stars this class this year too...

Gonna take time, as has been the story for many many years. Getting embarrassed 58-0 doesn't help the cause, but we knew it was gonna be ugly today.

Players will go to a school where they like the players and the coaches. Losing isn't always bad for recruits to see as many of them see that as an opportunity to play as a true freshman.

If we could strive to be like Wisconsin, we would be happy. The trouble seems to be not getting any kids from Wisconsin. It still takes talent.

A lot of the kids in this class are far better than the people Flood was bringing in. If he managed to land a talented kid, it was because the kid was hurt as a senior, had grade issues or was a future felon. I hated his guts for a reason and its because he was stealing money while filling the roster with piss poor talent.

And this is the "talent" Ash has to work with at this point unfortunately.

We have great kids in this program but most of them are not equipped to be at this level of football.

Going to BIG was the worst mistake this school has ever made. Everyone involved should be fired.

When you lose 58 - 0, it tells you we simply don't belong. OSU lost 14 players to NFL and their new team is even better than the one they had last year. We are rank amateurs going up against pros.

With Grant out, I wonder if the staff has given any thought to using Goodwin, Sneed & Snorweah on the outside some to get more playmakers in the game? Or, even have one of them in with Martin or Hicks then leaving them in the backfield and putting Martin or Hicks in motion to the outside? They always talk about how good that RB room is. I know we still need to be able to complete a pass to them which seems unlikely presently.

Another moronic post. So this should mean Purdue, Maryland, Indiana, Illinois and Northwestern should all be out of the conference as well.

Elite championship programs have highly rated recruits AND a player development culture. When you have the first and not the second, you have LSU from 2013 until now, or USC between John Robinson and Pete Carroll, or The University of Miami since about 2003.

RU didn't need a roster full of 4* recruits to beat Iowa last week. They only needed an average QB to win that game.

Beat a team like Iowa and win other games against Indiana, Illinois, and Minnesota. Go to a bowl game and build a program. 6-7 wins can lead to better recruits and to 8-9 wins. Build off of that to get better recruits and more wins.

Better QB play today would have lead to a closer game but RU is a long way away from playing with elite teams.

People need to start waking the **** up and get over their delusions about Fliod's recruiting being anything more than awful. Our roster is littered with kids who had either no other P5 offers, or minimal ones, and Judd with more FCS offers than FBS ones. All the bullshit excuse-making from so many on this board who refused to listen. Well, WTF did those now bitching expect?

OP IS SPOT-ON

I agree with Nuts, the OP is right. Except for this:

..."I'm sure I'll get replies about how Wisconsin does it. Just stop with that. They are the rare exception.. if you think Rutgers HAD anywhere near the player development culture that Wisconsin has, you shouldn't be a football fan."

There, I fixed it for ya.

Recruiting is the life blood of any program. There are some who can consistently hang their hat on the "diamond in the rough" strategy but they are few and far between.

It will take at least 4 solid years of recruiting to get good again.

We had the worse defense in school history last year which is saying something when we played in the 1st game ever.

Our offense was just throw it to Leonte Carroo last year, he is now in the NFL. This year it was hope Grant can make magic happen, and he is out for the year. We do not have too many any other play makers besides the RB and he can't do everything himself.

The coaching staff is light years better at everything than the last one, anyone who doesn't see that hasn't been paying attention.

Right now the coaches are stuck trying to make chicken salad out of chicken sh... you know what.

Hopefully they can hold the class together but they will be all true freshmen. So next year it will be just more pain but by year 3 we should see the 1st sneak peak of where this program is really heading.

Ash isn't going to compete with this Ohio state team in year 1. Our entire secondary has 1 year experience except for Cioiffi, Linebackers have zero experience, offense can't stay on the field for longer than 30 seconds, so what do you get, a group of inexperienced players on the field against an explosive Ohio state offense for 60 minutes. People who are so upset aren't dealing in reality. When we have the recruits on the roster who can run the offense, things will get better. Our receivers are garbage, backs have nowhere to run, and QB is the worst in the country, so what did you expect. When Oden and Lewis are both game-ready, then we can act angry at these blowouts

this.

Everyone and their mother expected a blowout today. Without a question. Just move on to next week, hope for the best, then we get three winnable games in a row assuming our offense has a pulse.

Tom Herman came at a cost of a bit over one million for Houston..... way less then Schiano money

... Yes, money helps a lot, but not always the requirement.
Still surprises me that Herman came to UH for 1.35M. Mehringer makes a 100k more than his OC boss at Houston.

Houston won the " hiring an assistant coach crapshoot" award...On paper, Herman did not deserve a multimillion contract..he just showed that he did after he got the job.

Great players make great coaches. Grant may have been our only great player.

I can only think we have Fudd diehards on here making a big stink because no normal person would be surprised by anything that has happened or be ready to get rid of our new slate of coaches after 5 games.

Yup. Years and years of missing out on top guys but being satisfied with "Rutgers men" is showing big time.

Oh well.

The posters that hyped up the "no other offers" Flood recruits as true 'Rutgers men" as a way to disparage players that had options to go elsewhere always gave me a chuckle. Well, there is a roster full of many of these Rutgers men so I hope the posters that were psyched about their future prospects aren't the any of the same ones complaining about the on field results.

Rutgers had their shot at a lot of good candidates after the 2013 season, if Julie could have done her job and found the money for the buyout. We weren't talking about Iowa and their 31 Million for Ferentz, we're talking about 850K.

There are 5000 Rutgers fans looking at their post Louisville game field of red screen savers as we speak. 1 night 10 years ago frozen in time..:weary:
