Jamichael Davis

Unfortunately before today he had the worst plus/minus on the team. If he plays like today, every game, we would all be happy with that. Not sure anyone can expect that.

You do realize the other 4 you play with have a huge impact on plus/minus. When Ace/Dylan rest he’s typically on the floor. Martini for example really does wonders for his plus minus.

It’s all averages and his plus/minus is significantly worse than everyone else. I really don’t want to turn this into a negative. I like JMike. If JMike plays like tonight, he should play a lot. If he plays like the first 10 games, he needs to play less.

The last 2 games Davis has started to show glimpses and why several platforms had him as a breakout player in the big 10. I think his continued progress is the key to the season for this team. I’m optimistic he settling in.
I would go back even further. JMike has been a Major contributor since the Penn St. game. Great to see his hard work paying off. Great defense, good ball control and assists and no more drives into triple teams at the hoop. And now his 3 point shot is beginning to fall!

Plus/minus is not the indicator you think it is. It’s a pretty useless stat.

What about FG % (worst on the team)? Is that useless too? How about FT % (worst on the team) or 3P % (2nd worst on the team)?

His other stats, including defensive ones, are all also either terrible or average.

There are little things, away from stats, that he does to help. For example, last night Columbia was down I think 8, they missed a shot and as their player was coming down with the rebound, he poked it away I think to Martini. No rebound stat, no steal, but it prevented a possible second chance bucket.

What about assist # and assist to turnover ratio? Caleb didn’t have great shooting numbers either. Should he have sat on the bench?

You can say the same thing about almost every player in every game: took a charge, set a key screen, dove for a loose ball. I’m sure Martini would excel at the little things but he can’t do the big things which matter more.

Can we just enjoy a win and some good play for once? Not everything has to be a moment to tear down the team, coach and players.

You left out “or tear down other fans”.

The negativity started by calling out people who evaluated Davis on his prior play - questioning his role and minutes.

Yet we have fans that state he should never shoot the ball and his minutes need to be cut.

If Martini hits 4 3s against Indiana does that make his performance against Princeton disappear?

Why turn a positive thread immediately negative.
If Davis is bad the next game, should we bump your post?

Absolutely, we can discuss things at a micro level but that usually misses the big picture.

JMike played really well yesterday. Right now, he deserves minutes as no one else off the bench is doing anything to steal minutes away from him. Derkack is going through a bit of a drop at the moment as he seems to miss every shot near the rim recently. But at least Derkack can get to the line as well. Derkack only played 19 minutes below his 24 per game. But Hayes, Martini, and Acuff all have so little to offer that they are doing nothing to steal away minutes from JMike. Acuff hit two late threes when the game was out of reach. Hayes hit one but missed 4 threes, and he became hesitant once he started missing, should have attempted maybe two more. I am not as concerned with Hayes suddenly not being able to make shots as he is a shooter. Hopefully Acuff comes around so we have two options. Martini I have lost all hope. The rotation likely will get tightened up as we get later Big 10 play, Martini likely odd man out. Maybe Acuff or Hayes down the road gets removed from the rotation depending on which one grows into their role and is more effective at hitting threes and scoring off the bench, but let’s hope both are effective.

Bottom line is that the transfers are not exactly “killing it” when they get on the floor, some a little better than others but none have been studs or a diamond in the rough. All of this adds up to JMike getting minutes as no one is doing a whole lot to steal them away from him. Plus, he seems to be getting more under control and is not flying to the basket on a drive that has no chance of scoring every time he touches the ball. We have plenty of scoring and don’t need him trying to be aggressive every time he touches it. He has found his role and is getting minutes, hopefully coaches spoke to him about that and told him he does not have to score every time he touches the ball. Some of these bench guys (which is what JMike was until the recent starts), they try and do too much and try and create when there is nothing there in an effort to shine and get minutes. JMike should be confident with his role now, shoot when the open shot is there but not force offense as we have seen from him before.

both Derkack and Davis should be on 4 shot cap every game. just saying vs real teams (in Conference) they are limited offensively. neither are shooters. Davis turns into Montez Mathis too much vs real teams.

Let’s make it 3,
Same for Ogbole,
Then Shelby will agree.

Let me know when the plus/minus statistic measures the heart & desire of a player.
You can have all the heart and the desire in the world. Doesn't mean you will play well. Let's be honest, Davis has been brutal most of the year. Hopefully he will continue to step it up during B1G games.

Agree, he was a key defensive player in the PSU game. Curious to see his minutes in upcoming conf play if the play on offensive side. More important who else is on court at same time.

The Davis/Derkack lineup is no bueno

I don’t disagree with you, and I am not a big fan of his typically. But, he has been better recently and the transfers have been getting worse it seems the longer the season goes on. They are almost complete zeroes at this point except Derkack (and let’s face it, Derkack can’t shoot either whether from the outside or at the rim) so they are actually helping Davis look pretty good when compared side by side. I can’t think of anything that Martini does or is capable of doing moving forward.

When people are saying that he should never see the floor, they deserve to be reminded cluelessness.
Nobody has an issue with him seeing the floor. Let him see the scoreboard, the student section, whatever he wants to look at. Many would prefer he not touch the basketball, however.

Against the better competition this year he’s often been unplayable on both ends. He’s been the target of opposing offenses on iso plays and post ups, and he takes bad shots most of the time.

A good game against Columbia doesn’t change the obvious against good teams and 1:1 matchups. Unfortunately, the portal foursome hasn’t been good either so Pike has no choice but to mix up rotations to look for chemistry and production.

To be honest, one could say team play has been "brutal". JMike being a starter brings some stability to the team play aspect for RU.

Like I said, cluelessness.

Coming into this season, JMike was the only player on our roster who had played a full slate of B1G games. He will be as ready as anyone on the team to compete in these next conference games.

He remains a solid defender (including 7 blocks already this year, after totaling 8 last year), and his assist to turnover ratio is a stellar 4-1 so far.

By all accounts he worked hard in the offseason, and his 3-point shooting appears improved. By limiting his interior drives among the trees, he will be a productive player for us, and I agree with Pike’s decision to start him as a result.
