Football Jay Butler is back at Rutgers

I don’t understand the two year reference?

There used to be (maybe still?) be a NCAA rule basically saying "if you hire a HS HC, you can't sign any of his players for X years".

Not sure if just basketball or football too.
Or even still in effect.

Didn't want teams to hire coaches just to get to their players. Similar to hiring someones "uncle".

That would be WRONG. Chris Partridge went to UM in 2015. he recruited Rashan Gary to UM 2015-2016.

Rule does not apply to on the field coaches. CP was one of the 9 (10 now) chosen ones so Michigan can still recruit PC.

I think it was because of this situation that the rule was created. Partridge did not start at Michigan as an on field coach, he was hired as Director of Player Personnel. Now the rule states is that you can't recruit a school for two years if you hire the coach for an off field position.

Yeah but in 2015, Partridge was NOT an on field coach.
Per USA Today 1/31/2015 article:
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has added a familiar face to his football staff.

Chris Partridge, who coached current Wolverines players Jabrill Peppers and Juwann Bushell-Beatty at Paramus (N.J.) Catholic, will join the staff as the “recruiting operations coordinator,” according to NorthJersey.com.

Was put in place after Partridge.

From NCAA:

11.4.4 Individual Associated with a Prospective Student-Athlete -- Bowl Subdivision Football. [FBS] In bowl subdivision football, during a two-year period before a prospective student-athlete's anticipated enrollment and a two-year period after the prospective student-athlete's actual enrollment, an institution shall not employ (either on a salaried or volunteer basis) or enter into a contract for future employment with an individual associated with the prospective student-athlete in any athletics department noncoaching staff position or in a strength and conditioning staff position. (Adopted: 4/26/17 a contract signed before 1/18/17 may be honored.)

11.4.4.1 Application. [FBS] A violation of Bylaw 11.4.4 occurs if an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete (see Bylaw 13.02.20) is employed by the institution and, at the time of employment, a student-athlete who enrolled at the institution in the previous two years (and remains enrolled at the institution) was a prospective student-athlete by which the individual meets the definition of an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete. A violation of Bylaw 11.4.4 also occurs if an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete is employed and, within two years after such employment, a prospective student-athlete by which the individual meets the definition of an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete enrolls as a full-time student in a regular academic term at the institution. In either case, the student-athlete becomes ineligible for intercollegiate competition unless eligibility is restored by the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. (Adopted: 4/26/17)

11.4.4.2 Exception -- Reassignment. [FBS] An institution may reassign an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete from a countable coaching staff position to a noncoaching staff position or strength and conditioning staff position, provided the individual has been a countable coach at the institution for at least the previous two academic years. (Adopted: 4/26/17)

Yes, I did not remember correctly. The rule was not in place at the time.

Art is already on the roster.

Any future IMG recruit in the next 2 years is potentially unavailable to Rutgers because Schiano brought Butler back.

Got it, there was a section that mentioned "previous 2 years" so I didn't understand if they looked 2 years before and after the hire for the potential conflict.

That would actually make sense in that what if you get a bunch of recruits from a school and basically tell them you are going to hire a coach. They all enroll and the next season you bring in those coachs, family members or handlers.

A little annoyed over this potential IMG restriction.

Butler's role is a legit position and just as important as an on-field staff position.
It should be included in the same exemption.

Not some made up assistsnt to the assistant recruiting/player development role.

congrats to Butler

couple of points
- my guess is we are not in the loop for any IMG players for this year's class and that would mean we can't get in for next year's class either. Schaino probably thinks it is ok as he may not be targeting any of the kids
- a change to the S and C coach can help a team. They struggled the past couple of years in many aspects. a spark by changing the coach can have a benefit.

Usually the strength and conditioning position at a high school applies to all sports. So we didn't hire a football coach from IMG. That's my guess.

Thank you and no more Valentine’s Day massacres stuff , we get good old fashion training and mental toughness.
