Joe Dooley - FGCU

Why do you think that?

Cluess somehow gets players, and his team wins in the MAAC but they play a lot of 1 on 1 basketball, take terrible shots and play almost no defense. Very undisciplined style that I don't think translates in the B1G. I heard somewhere that some of the kids he gets might not get into RU but I have nothing to back that up.

The style doesn't bother me, it basically reminds me of Loyola Marymount awhile back. There's no let up but you're right defense will not be a priority. I don't see why it couldn't work. If anything it something different that might put some pressure on opposing teams not used to it. The idea of getting players at Iona that aren't likely to fly here could be an issue but who's to say he couldn't adapt.

Cluess was the guy I liked the last go around when we hired EJ and I still like him but I gotta say the more I'm reading about Dooley the more I like his name as much and maybe even more as someone who might be able to make the jump up. Been known to be a top ranked assistant and recruiter in the past, seems to be known nationally to a degree in recruiting circles, connections with Fraschilla who has scouted internationally, assistant stint with him as well as a long one with Self, remaking dunk city to fit his persona with strong focus on effort, defense. I like the total package and the resume. Does it mean he's a guarantee, no one is but out of the realistic candidates out there he's moving higher up my list the more I read. Of course our lists mean nothing, it's Hobbs' decision to find the right guy.

Dooley seems like a much better choice than Hurley would have been. He was an assistant at Kansas for ten years and has had success as a head coach with two teams.

Definitely would not be disappointed with a guy like Dooley.

If 50 is too old for some of you, maybe a guy like Chris Caputo would be of interest to you. 36 years old, from NJ, known for his recruiting. One of the top assistants out there.

Chris Caputo is a guy that would merit consideration if the backup plan is for a young and hungry assistant like Chris Ash.

@Russ Wood, any thoughts on Caputo down there in Florida ??

Caputo is well respected in-state. I've liked him for some time, going back to his George Mason days. Tireless worker whether recruiting or game prep/scouting.

I've heard his name associated with the Drexel job, but I think he can do better than that.

Yea I've read that article, thanks.

It would be interesting to see that style (with the right players) go up against the boring Big Ten. I think it plays well at the RAC if we are bombing threes at 40%. AJ English recruited by Cluess and staff is better than any player we've had since Douby.

FGCU doing a nice job in the paint so far against UNC. I think eventually the pace of the game is going to get to them but I like the way their bigs have held up so far. UNC has the size to match and more athletes but early on not so bad. I do think UNC will pull away sooner or later.

Why not UCF?

FGCU playing far from a perfect game but hanging around near the end of the first half. Doing a better job in transition defense and limiting 2nd/3rd chance points which they were letting up earlier. Few of their bigs in slight foul trouble but only down 1 at half. Nice job let's see if they can keep it going in the 2nd.

after watching Purdue lose in double OT after being up big late.. the "boring Big Ten" comment above hits home. Purdue might have an opening at head coach. That was terrible.

back to the topic.. would be great to get a coach that coaches an exciting style.

I don't know that the pace FGCU is playing at right now is typically their style. But their supposed to be known for defense and effort and for sure they've shown a lot of energy and effort tonight. I like that they have quite few bigs in their stable too. They can match UNC's size to a degree but probably not their talent or depth.

I'm skeptical if they can keep up the pace but if they can, stay out of foul trouble and play like they did the 2nd part of the first half then who knows.

The more research and stuff I've read on Dooley and I've posted it all here in this thread the more his candidacy has gone up my list right to the top. A game like this is just another piece of the puzzle and icing on the picture that was already forming for me. He's sort of becoming like my Dave Aranda for football who I became very high on the more I researched him.

And it does not hurt that AD Hobbs and ex-Governor Codey are long-time friends of (West Orange, NJ native) Dooley and his family. FGCU season tickets for Codey's, as well.

I'm kind of hoping that a game like tonight if it continues in this fashion doesn't raise his profile too much that he becomes out of realistic reach for us. Although I will say Rice's near miss against Villanova still had him obtainable but I think Dooley could be more sought after with strong finish tonight.

IIRC I think he makes around 250K or so and has turned down assistant offers doubling his salary. Of course we'd offer a lot more than that but I'd hope some bigger fish doesn't come sniffing around.

I feel like I've read Codey's brother, or some relative of his, is a ticket holder for FGCU but I'm not certain. I might be confusing things with all the things I've been reading lately

Pace, transition D and 2nd/3rd chance points killing them again like it did at the start of the first half. Have to get that stuff under control or the game is going to get away from them. It's getting close to it now.

UNC asserting themselves in the second half.
Yup, pace transition talent too much for them now. Gonna take a real strong effort to turn the tide and probably not likely. Good effort while it lasted.
