John Smith retired - Magic Man Hired 🤯

This.. we had plenty of realistic chances to beat programs on their “down years”.. but we literally never do.. based on pure statistics we should have by now… yep we haven’t won any upsets nor can u think of any big coin flip matches we won recently?? But we have gotten upset by lesser teams plenty of times…. Dual meet record doesn’t mean much until we can win some coin flip/slight underdog matches… and/or move up the b10 pecking order.. We are moving in the right direction but it has been scarily stagnant for the last decade..
5-10 years ago we didn’t even have those chances

That original class created so much original buzz around the RU program… ranked #2 overall class recruit … had #2 Winston, #17 Melde and a whole bunch of NJ state champs… everyone back then believed RU woulda became a instant powerhouse if we kept the top NJ talents in…young and wide eyed… seemed like we were a sleeping giant destined to be awaken… little did we know how much harder it would actually be..

Pretty hard to build a consistent top 5-10 team when many of the NJ private school parents and coaches (and club coaches) push the elite local NJ recruits elsewhere, because they think they're too good for Rutgers. Goodale basically said this recently and it's why we expanded our OOS recruiting emphasis.

Would they think they were too good for Rutgers if we were a perennial top 10 team?

Some are going to say they'd rather have Pollard, I'm not one of them. But no one can deny, the optics of this one don't look good for Goodale. Local and Rutgers legend goes to cross town rival.

Hence my slap in the face reference a few days ago. It seems there is more to this story than people here are willing to say.

I don’t consider it a slap in the face but it does feel wrong

So it feels wrong he left relatively his hometown college where he accomplished more than any RU wrestler to schlep shortly south to that enigma of a place they call central Jersey, to an in state rival, while basically separating yourself from place you called home and who's fanbase worships the ground you walk on...but there no slap in the face feeling? Maybe a good slap on the buttocks is more appropriate, but not in a good/fun way.

It stinks but seems like both parties are on good terms and no bad blood… maybe Ash just got a better deal over there or we didn’t want to change up our staff…

Some of you guys are so dramatic. He’s doing what’s best for him and taking a job that’s available. A slap in the face would be if Rutgers offered him the same job and same pay and he opted to go elsewhere. That job is currently unavailable at Rutgers. If you want to argue that Rutgers could have created a job for him as a placeholder then fine, but he’s not going to put his career on hold because of your feelings.

Ain't no drama here and my feelings aren't affected as much as you think. The sky isnt falling but Rutgers would have had a very beneficial effect of him being here. We want AAs and national championship coaches. From many people's point if view, this would have checked every box we need and would have been an ideal hire. Rutgers and/or AA didnt want it for whatever reason.

You find a place for Ashnault if he wants to be here. You don’t tell, we dont have any room for you. They’ll make something work with Rivera, I bet.
