Jonah Jackson to Ohio State

Bottom line:
if you're looking towards an NFL career,
which program provides the best opportunity to be in the early rounds, Rutgers or OSU.

I think being a member of the Buckeye OL makes for a better draft position because of the talent around you that would make you look better .

Yeah, but the culture was broken at Rutgers. Go back and read this board during the 2015 season and towards the end. Flood drove the program into the cesspool. A culture change was definitely needed.
I agree that talent left from the 2012 and 2013 classes was there, but what did Ash get in the 2014, 2015 and 2016 classes that were Flood classes?
2013 class- 22 recruits, 10 washed out of the program
2014 class- 26 recruits, 15 washed out
2015 class- 25 recruits, 12 washed out
2016 class- 18 recruits, 6 washed out.

Not a lot to work with from the 2013-16 classes.

I agree with you if what you say is true about Ash short-selling Rutgers. Part of the job of a head coach is the ability to sell ice to Eskimos. He is not a salesman.

And I agree with you that when he took over in 2016, with the 2012 class included, he had talent to work with, and he squandered it. But 2017 was a bit of a surprise, and while RU should not have lost to Kansas and Buffalo, the on field results were not surprising for 2018.

Have said it before. No more excuses and BS for 2019. Ash has to prove it. 5 wins is the absolute minimum he must show to keep his job. Hope Pat Hobbs sees it the same way.

You point out the "washed out" players, but many of those guys were just passed over for his (Ash's) recruits. He did not want to recognize his predicessors products unless he had to. Ash said all he needed to when he acknowleged that he never look at past years game films to see how they looked against B10 competition. Ash could have leaned on a lot of those "washed out" guys that would have performed much better than true Freshman such as Seymore at RT. New was always better. Look how he botched the QB situation every year. His handling of Hicks and Martin his first year was inexcusable.

When he hired a former WR and WR coach as a RB coach and a former RB as the WR coach, that was raised eybrows for recruits. We heard how people recruiting against RU pointed that out to a couple of our WR targets, and said who is better suited to get you to the league? A former WR as the WR coach or a former RB as a WR coach who has no expirience coaching receivers? Ash did not fix that until after LOI day when one of the recruits HS coaches mentioned that.

Ash has sooo many self inflicted wounds I question his competency. Why do thing have to go so far as to blow up before he addresses the issue?.

Yes, agreed it was flood’s fault and he dug the hole. All the guy had to do was maintain what Schiano built . Thanks pernetti.
But ash and Hobbs don’t get a pass here. They have made the situation worse . I really think the program would be in better shape if flood stayed. I don’t see him going 1-11 with beatdowns to Kansas and buffalo . He would have turned in 3-5 wins season. And remember I always maintained “flood is a dud”. But at least the guy would try a fake field goal or have his quarterback complete a pass

Oh I’m not giving Ash or Hobbs a pass, I’m horrified at the prospect of Hobbs hiring another football coach. As far as Flood not losing to Buffalo and Kansas, I’m not so sure. You have to remember that Flood was propped up by Schiano’s recruits (especially Carroo) for virtually his entire tenure as well as an outstanding defense that nearly coached itself thanks to Greg. That D slowly deteriorated over time but I’ve heard the old staff here say the 2012 defense virtually coached itself. I think if Flood was forced to ‘coach’ a team of his own guys, we’d be seeing similar results to what Ash has done. I think some on this board forget all this when they bring up the Flood days.

Now, Ash has still done an objectively terrible job. Given he tried to flip the roster as much as he has and on paper has recruited better than Flood did, it especially speaks to how bad he is that his teams have underperformed the way they have. But we’re comparing turds to turds here.

This fan base has been so battered with bad that I think Flood looks OK in hindsight because it took time for Greg’s work to be undone. That truly bothers me, Flood shouldn’t get away with what he did to this program. Those wins against a crappy Michigan and Arkansas are nice memories, but something bad was brewing under the surface.

Don't like that he went to an in divisional foe. Sorry but I don't wish the kid any ill will but I just can't root for him. It's a slap in the face to all his teammates here at Rutgers. I'm a Rutgers fan not an OSU fan, so I'm not going to applaud the move.
I understand how you feel but it is a great move for him, I wish him well. The wants an opportunity to play meaningful games in November and to play in a bowl game.

I'm not the guy's defender, but word was Hicks in particular was not buying into Ash, and if true, that cost him. I was screaming for more Hicks in 2016. And perhaps that was more on Drew than Ash, but ultimately, Ash is the head coach and the buck stops with him.

As far as washouts, don't see many that would have taken a place on OL:
Margolis (WRO), Blue (LB) Dailey (DB), Boggs (DB), Kraut (RB), Bedell (gone way before Ash), Lister (TE), Behir, TE, Webb (OL-transferred to Buffalo), Gopre, Ports, Ibanez, Justin Nelson--may have missed a few. Many of these guys washed out before Ash got to RU.

Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers this, very rarely do I ever see anyone mention this. Ash's mistakes started right here. The fact that he refused to watch the previous season's tapes is mind bogglingly shortsighted for a number of reasons. When I heard him say that I knew he was setting himself up for failure, and it would be his fault. It was stubbornness turned stupidity.

Flood left Ash a couple of impact players, 5 or less in my opinion, and I agree Ash pissed them away. Going forward however, Ash has on the whole recruited better than what Flood left (but not good), he's just done even less with that talent.

Why is knight shift defending ash here? He was one of the biggest flood homers going, but now it’s all floods fault?
Oh well...knight shift has me on ignore . My loss

He is a fan and a lot of fans have very short memories regarding their own prior positions, it is very convenient that way.

But the dark clouds that have circled over this program were brought here by one man, and that man is Kyle Flood. Blame Ash all you want for failing to get us out of the hole, but someone had to dig the hole. Don't let Sarkisian's nepotism hire at Alabama fool you, Flood lacked knowledge, work-ethic and accountability the likes of which few college football programs ever see.

Until someone gets us back to 6-6 and in-the-black so to speak, Flood will always deserve some blame for putting us where we are.

Flood dug a hole and handed the shovel to Ash, who just kept digging. We're now 3 full years past Flood and going into the 4th, and we have arguably a thinner roster right now than when Ash came in. In four years of "program change" and recruiting where everything about the "old" was thrown out (both Flood and Schiano traditions alike) in favor of the "new", we're at the point where beating the Vegas over/under on the season comes down to whether we can edge out UMass at home in the season opener.

In his fourth year, the sins of the past are gone - and they have become the sins of the present. This is Ash's team, and the next coach will have to deal with the hole Ash dug. Flood's negative impact on this program is largely irrelevant at this point.

Agreed. People are still seemingly clinging to Jackson, Turay, Joseph, Bless, Grant, Hicks, Miller, Applefield, Martin, Cole and Wilkins as ‘proof’ that Flood was ‘better than you think’ at recruiting...while basically ignoring the dozens of guys who either washed out or never really had a realistic chance at contributing here. The current roster is on Ash now, but it’s amazing how people have seemingly forgotten that multiple position groups (WR, LB, DT, DE, TE, K/P, etc.) were being held together with duct tape and fun-tak. People also seem to forget that we were headed straight into a brick wall off the field by 2015 and if Flood stayed, the NCAA would have had a field day with us. This is always goes overlooked and I truly don’t know how.

...that all being said, Ash has made a bad situation worse, especially with OL/DL recruiting.

Floods recruiting classes were loaded with 2 stars. Ash has cut down on the 2 stars. I don't think Ash kept digging. I think he cratered in year 1 and starting digging out of the hole, only to hit that crater again in year 3.
We will see what happens this year. If Ash drives down below the crater and he is floundering early in the season, hope he gets fired mid season.

@80RU brought up an excellent point on the RT and want to give him full credit for figuring this one out as no but him has mentioned it on either board. He's going to OSU for a Masters in Educational Administration. Rutgers offers that Masters Degree. That's not how this whole grad transfer thing is supposed to work. Maybe someone here can enlighten us on the loophole OSU found.

It's about more than recruiting, though recruiting is part of it.

The complete failure to establish any sort of offensive philosophy in his first year, while also bringing in no help on that side of the ball, while ALSO turning his defense over to a guy who should never have had a P5 DC gig at all.... kept the program heading downward. As bad as Flood was, he wasn't 78-0 bad.

Then the failure in his second year to establish any sort of offensive philosophy, abandoning what he was reportedly trying for in his first year (along with abandoning the recruiting philosophy to mach).... though he did bring in someone with coaching experience, that person hadn't called plays in a decade and had health concerns. He continued to allow a G5 DC to run his defense, and apparently didn't feel the need to step in on that side of the ball at all.

Further failure in his third year to establish much of an offensive philosophy, having brought in another guy who hadn't called plays in a decade... but this time with a thinner resume as a college coach/coordinator. Once again, the prior philosophy (if there really was one) was tossed, along with the recruiting philosophy that aligned with it - and we go into an offense run by a "TE guy" after having not recruited any TEs out of HS the prior two years. More than halfway through the season, this former NC DC finally realized his G5 DC was well out of his depth and took over... but he's already ready to hand the reins back to another DC with a sketchy resume.

We took a risk hiring Ash, and it didn't work out. The time to cut our losses and move on was two months ago, yet we stumble forward with him at the helm for another season. If we don't come out with 5+ wins and an expected Top 40 class, he should be shown the door. If he does, maybe he can turn it around - but at this point I'd say the chances of that are slim.

Most of your points are good, but the last one about the NCAA is off the mark. The NCAA would not impose any more penalties on us if Flood stayed or went. They impose the same penalties wether a new regime comes in or not. There were NCAA penalties which is why Ash got the extension that makes it too expensive to fire him. He is here at least 2 more years despite the product that he puts on the field.

There is zero way with a two win season or less after an 0'fer B10 schedule last year,Ash and/or Hobbs survive for another season.
Barchi can pretend not to care but when more money is lost from football revenue, and alumni,BOG and national media roast RU again ,there will not be another option other then firing Ash,Hobbs or both.

because Knight Shift is a flip flooper. A one time Floodie to the bitter end he now is starting to admit Ash is going the way of his boy Flood in about 9 months from now.
To try and save face with two supported failures and so much hot air,he figures why not just blame it all on Flood..which everyone knows now is a tired excuse .

I hope you are right, but I hope more that Ash is able to somehow right the ship by getting to at least 6 wins. I don't see 5 wins as any more succesfull than his 4 win season because it will not make us bowl eligible, and it will not improve the recruiting dynamic because of that.

Maybe having an OC for a second year will help the offense be more than offensive.

There was real improvement on D when he got involved with the play calling last year. If he stays involved instead of turning it over to Bah, we may improve a little there. If RU starts the season the way we finished last year, I would expect some more wins to come. We were a play away at the end of the game from upsetting MSU and PSU BECAUSE OF THE d.

I also think IF the same boosters make the buy out offer with Gregg Brown this year,Hobbs will have no other option then to move forward or face getting shown the door himself,by not dumping Ash.If Barchi tries to Block it again(which is a guess what really happened),then Hobbs will really be left high and dry to go down with the S.S. Ash .

If brains were dynamite, the two of you would not have enough to blow your noses.
I stated in several posts I was not defending Ash.
Ash started in a deep hole. He has not gotten one inch higher out of that hole. Some say he dug himself deeper. I say he is about in the same place as when he started.

Fair points, and it is just guessing on my part but based on how Flood was running things, I cringe thinking about what could have happened had that continued to run its course.

A 2003 Civic is an upgrade over a 1994 Impala, too. I was never sold on McNulty, and he hasn't exactly stepped into a situation where he's set up for success. Maybe he can move the needle this year - we'll see.

Also, for the record, I give Hobbs a bit of a pass for Ash's initial hire. He was contacted initially about the job on 11/20/15, hired on 11/29, and was immediately expected to hire a P5 football coach after having zero experience running a department with a football program. News first broke that Ash would "reportedly" be hired on 12/2, and he was introduced on 12/7.

That's a bit of a whirlwind, especially for someone who hadn't swam in this level of waters - and he made an error on Ash after what was apparently a knockout interview.

Well, it's a little over 3 years later, and I don't give him a pass for retaining him. He did that having experience in the role and with eyes wide open. As soon as the final seconds tick off the clock next year, a decision has to be made. Either Ash has had a stunning and dramatic turnaround to take us to a bowl game with a big recruiting haul in the works, or Hobbs needs to show him the door.

Not that anyone should expect anything, but it will be interesting if OL play improves this year to the point where RU can have a functional pass offense. That would speak volumes about the previous OL coach's coaching.
I see Ash tracking Darell Hazell in a big way:
Season 1: 1-11/0-8
Season 2: 3-9/1-7 improvement!
Season 3: 2-10/1-7
Season 4: 3-3/1-2
9-33/3-24

Hobbs has said it is his policy to make coaching decisions at the end of the season. He will likely start off 1-3, with losses to Iowa, BC and Michigan. If he can't notch a win against Maryland or Indiana, or 2 wins against Maryland, Indiana and Minnesota, he should be fired mid-season.

Ha, ha, you are more forgiving than I am. See, I am not defending Ash!! If Ash is 1-5 at six games into the season, RU will have a horrible recruiting class. A message needs to be sent to the players, the fanbase and to recruits that RU will not continue to accept crappy coaching.

Ash has made so many obvious, foolish mistakes in the last few years it's impossible for anyone to think he was ready for this job. He has no opinion or input on the offense. He waited 2.5 years to take the reins of a horrible defense that he's supposed to be known for (this is truly mind boggling). He does not sell or hype the program. That's the tip of the iceberg. He is not a head coach at this point, and I don't think he ever will be.

Also Jackson left because Ash fired Blazek. It sucks but I'd rather Blazek gone. His hire was another of Ash's dumb mistakes.

the way i see it about the chris ash hire...the man had no clue the situation he was getting himself into...was he so hard up for a hc job, he was oblivious to what it takes to be a hc and a hc at rutgers.....absolutely his fault., he was oh so prepared for his interview, that he overlooked the most important factor concerning this job..the history of ru football...its all on him. which i'm sure is the case..i was a big supporter of this hire, and i haven't given up yet..this conference , and the east division is making things that much harder for mr. ash..he should have done is home work. he didn't, now he's paying the price.

I would place it at 50/50 that he doesn't finish the year. I see a 1-3 start as well, he has got to pick up at least one win against Maryland, Indiana, and Minnesota to make it to Liberty. Those are the three key games IMHO in his entire Rutgers tenure. After those three he has a great chance to pick up two wins, Liberty and an absolutely awful Illinois team that would likely be a bottom feeder in the Sun Belt Conference. That would equal 4 wins for the season and he survives to fight another day in 2020.

You can’t blame a head coaching candidate for not understanding what he’s getting himself into....these are men with tremendous confidence/egos. That’s the RU admins job to evaluate and put him in position to succeed. Unfortunately, we also had an admin that didn’t really understand either so they are both learning on the job. It was clear the day they hired Hobbs the football program might be stuck in neutral for another cycle. I think Ash is a good man and represents RU admirably with respect to culture, ethics, community, etc so am rooting for him to succeed...but he’s basically bet the farm on youth.

I still wish we could've been a fly on the wall during Chris Ash's interview.

The man just exudes nothing, he's the living embodiment of flop sweat mixed with natural discomfort.

Ash might be a decent HC somewhere else down the line, but he's done pretty much everything wrong in his go-around. Sure he hasn't been caught going incognito to meet up with a professor to get a football player eligible academically, but his on the field results have been nearly as deplorable.

that's for sure.....i don't want to hear any shiano fan boys making excuses for this man, and his ego....fu greg
He didn't take Smith either because Smith got the DC job. Do you believe that he "left" Flood here?

Nope- can't blame Greg for leaving...To be honest, at that point, you could already see that his time seemed to be running out here. BUT, there is no way in hell you turn down the NFL at his age. That is just crazy talk.
And as hiwater pointed out, it wasn't about "except KF" Greg came back and took the guys that were still available. And he didn't have much choice.
I don't even kill TP or Flood for that moment either. In hindsight, he should have been willing to let that class go and do a real search but we had our best class ever and it looked like the program needed to keep it to keep momentum. And by all means, KF looked at worst to be a "safe" pick and he was well liked and respected by most. My gut tells me that while Flood never would have been an above average HC, our history would have played out completely different if Julie wasn't hired. She was really the single person who dragged this program into the shitter. Flood wasn't strong enough to figure out a way to work around her so he soon fell into a mode of seems to be, not giving a crap.
As for Flood vs Ash...I think we can discuss it without having to say that either one is or was good. Both are part of this mess. And I may have been more forgiven to Ash because we were a mess when he got here but I have now seen other schools turn around shitty programs so much faster then he has and he just seems to get worse. As others noted and I agree, this guy came in here and shit on every player that was not "his guy". In some cases, he still had to play a few of those guys but in others, if you were recruited by Flood, he wanted no part of them. And instead of building his own excuse from day one about how bad our program was, maybe he should have taken a different approach and be positive and maybe get some recruits excited about coming here.
I don't think Ash is a bad guy or a bad coach, but he just doesnt seem to have the soft skills or good instincts.
2019- he now has an OC for 2 years, the D did seem to respond once he took control. We have to see something this year. Maybe pull off an upset, maybe look good in a game that we are supposed to get blown out in. Maybe even gain over 200 yds in a game.
Another full year of the crap he has shown, and I am almost ready to move on.

Gain over 200 yards in 2 games, gets a 3 year extension?

Imagine being such a shriveled up shell of a subhuman that you judge people based on what kind of car they drive. Dude, I chose the Prius. Why do you think it would bother me when you point out I drive it? It's not like when I make fun of your rank stupidity, which is clearly something you'd opt out of if you could.

By the way, the other car in my driveway is a Mercedes.
Bernie wants you to ditch the Mercedes. You can keep the Prius. $$$$
