Kansas basketball dorms

Had a couple of my kids attend KU on athletic scholies. Their facilities are second too none and academics there are top notch. Seems like every decade or so they upgrade the athletic dorms. The non athletic dorms aren't too bad either. Some of the dorms have outdoor pools (small but nice)

Their arena is much older than the RAC and is decidedly unplush. It looks like the Palestra on steroids but I'm sure it drips with atmosphere during a KU home game. One thing I really liked when I visited their campus a few years ago was the athletics museum (for all sports) that is located just below the arena. Lots of basketball and track, with famous names in both, represented there; football, not so much.

As for an "athletic dorm," I've never really liked the concept of keeping athletes separate from the rest of the student body. It can work for a KU or a UK with their great basketball traditions but elsewhere, it would seem to work against having the players establish a bond with other students, which can help generate more support for a team when others get to know them as people and not a bunch of pre-professional athletes.

Tough to compete against that.

Imagine those who aren't playing after college to go from that and in to the real world. Must be very difficult for a 22-23 year old to go from being treated like a king to someone who probably isn't cared about that much.

As a parent, you want the best for your child. I'd have mixed feelings about that one.

We are light years away from that. Your typical prof at RU would stage protests if the school tried to build that.

No, we can't compete with that, but once our new facility is completed we will be able to compete better than ever before and if we have a winning program, that will make it easier to compete for better recruits. Oh and one other thing: no matter how beautiful their facilities are and how great their BB program has been for nearly a century, our football program is light years better than theirs and will only continue to grow. As for our BB program the only direction we have now is UP. I like that trajectory.

Kansas is much less demographically challenged than NJ. They can do this amd not face a firing squad from the state or fans. WTF else do they have ? Burnt ends? Gizzards? They have hoops .And wheat.

That's what it takes to get the best players in the country to attend your school. I am sure if you take tours of the faculties and dorms of schools that win championships in football and basketball what Kansas has is the status quo. 17 year old kids love that stuff who does not like living in a new buetiful place?

So, all the NCs, Kentuckys and Dukes of the world have something similar? Wow
There are no NCs, Kentuckys and Dukes of the world. There is North Carolina, Kentucky and Duke.

The living accommodations for Kentucky basketball players are impressive. I have not seen Duke's or UNC's. I've seen the apartment building Maryland players are in and while not on KU's level I really like it. Same for Florida.

At some schools the basketball and football team members are celebrities. Having them in the same dorm with idolizing (and possibly including cleat chasing girls) is not a good idea.

I think it's better for athletes to live with athletes.

Can't speak from a hoop perspective but I can tell you that back in my day an in season daily schedule was as follows.

Practice 3-5:30

Dinner 6:00

Position Meetings 7:00

Study Hall 8:00 to 10:00

Some days 2 hours isn't enough so you head back to your dorm but maybe your roommate and his buds are hanging out , listening to music , watching TV-----which is certainly their right. But you need quiet.

I moved off campus and lived with teammates Year 3 and 4 and found it a much better situation and my grades reflected it.

Eco I had the pleasure of going out to Allen Fieldhouse for a game a couple of seasons ago as my good friend who is an RU alum like me grew up a Jayhawk bball fan (still supports RU as well). When I tell you that age does not matter in that arena, it is the truth. It was a home game against Towson in early November on a Thursday or Friday night and we had GA tickets which means first come first serve in terms of how close you are to the court. The fans were LINED UP 2 hours before tip when the gates open 90 minutes before to get close to the court! This is for TOWSON! The atmosphere and the HOF in the arena are truly something else. When you have that great of a program the need for a state of the art arena is not needed. Their fan base is tremendous in terms of their passion, not just the students and the fact that it remained pretty much full till the end despite the blowout.

Assembly Hall at IU is like that too.

Used to have a customer who would take me there to a game occasionally when I was in town.

Was amazed at the people who used to sit in his area-----some of them had IU season tickets since the 50's .

I believe that the money came from KU donors and not the school. I asked a KU Coach and he said they have 15 or 17 non student-athletes living there too. Some NCAA rule.

These kids are basically semi pro at factories. Winning is more important than seeing them walking around your dorm. And not seeing them walking around your dorm helps them win.
Hogwash! Some of my greatest memories in school were pranking Ray Lucas and watching Charles Jones walk around the dorms h!gh as a kite. Good times.

Have any of you ever done a tour of Livi Apartments where our BBall players live? Separate rooms , granite counter tops with stainless steel appliances, on top of a lot of other amenities throughout. On top of a movie theater, Starbucks, diner etc.
