Rutgers ball, 4th down and 11, ball on the Nebraska 37 yard line, 14 seconds left in the first half, the pocket breaks down (no surprise) and Laviano scrambles free and then..... heaves it into the end zone where there are 4 Rutgers players and 7 Nebraska players waiting... despite the fact that he had a wide open field in front of him and could have easily run for the first down and then kicked a field goal.

Was this just bad judgment on Laviano's part or am I missing something?

After the play there were 4 seconds left. We had no timeouts left. So either Laviano would have had to get the first and get out of bounds before time expired or get the first and we would have to set up and kick the field goal in just a few seconds - I don't think either could have happened.

It looked like he could have easily gotten the first down and gotten out of bounds before time expired.
I deleted my recording when I got home from the game (before I watched it - not a glutton for punishment) so I really can't say for sure.

You must be the guy in section 127 that kept screaming why didn't he run, I turned around and told you that was 4th down and 0 timeouts. There is not way he would have gotten out of bounds and a first down at the same time. The Nebraska defenders would have come up quickly.

Give it a rest.

Qft

The one that bothered me more was sliding in the third down run in the fourth. How do you slide there? Fight for the first instead of ducking a tackle.

the BTN announcers mentioned the play. One thought he could have easily gotten the first down -- nobody was near him.

I heard someone say the same thing in 226 but I did not notice if he had the room. Poor coaching meant we burned timeouts earlier and did not have one here where it was needed. If he knew he had the TO he may have run and could have gone to the middle or sideline, wherever there was the most space.

Wow this is laughable . Some people here just don't know football . Laviano could have ran an picked up the first down . Clock would have stopped and he could have spiked the ball on first down . It would have been close , but it was certainly an option.

Do some math guys...he threw that ball with at least 8 to go and can run 40 Yards in under 5 seconds

Nothing he does is clean smart football in these situational moments

Are they coached so much on a micro level that they don't feel any of the game

And he'd get tackled at the 20 yd line and the half was over.

People are reaching. Laviano was awful in enough phases. He made the right play there

Ray Lucas was most upset that the ball was not caught in the end zone..... It wound up that our two receivers got in each other's way more than the pass getting broken up by a defender......

We had that play, and two more later on that were consecutive third and fourth down, that the receivers just did not make the catch...... Contrast that to the Nebraska receivers who made several difficult catches.....

I thought the clock only stopped long enough for the chains to be reset? No one is saying it wasn't an option - just that it wasn't necessarily the glaringly correct option.

Too bad RU didn't have a TO to use in that situation. RU uses timeouts coming out of breaks because the play clock is about to go to zero for delay of game. We have a truly talented staff.

GO RU

That's correct. I guess your not laughable

Agree with Raritan about the slide. need to get the first down. Football IQ is not good.

Yes you can spike the ball after the chains get reset and clock starts . You would need the clock to be stopped with 3 seconds and allow 2 seconds for a spike . Leaving you with 1 second.
Lavisiano would have had to get down as soon as he got the first down . It was certainly an option , but there is a chance laviano would have ran down to the 10 and time would have ran out.

Bad judgment on his part. My whole section was screaming to run. The whole right side of the field was open he only had a linebacker(52) in the middle of the field at around the 15 yd line. He could have easily raced for an extra 10-15yds and gotten out of bounds with time to spare. His field awareness is lacking same with the slide short of the 1st down.

I have a feeling that if he tried to do the run for 1st down and spike option they would have faced an issue with the receivers making it back to the line in time. I do think that he could have made the first and got out of bounds though.

Assumptions:
1) Federico would make the kick
2) Laviano had any inkling how much time was left
3) Laviano may have slid to avoid the inevitable hit
4) Laviano may have appled up when it came to spiking the ball
5) Laviiano didn't see this as his best chance for the rest of the day to get a TD pass on the books.
