Lawrence Phillips found dead in prison at age 40

Chris Nowinski is the guy who acquires the brains for the MIT researchers....I hope he's all over this.

The face of Nebraska football. Not. But had he gone to RU, well no doubt a certain local rag would be all over State U.

The guy seemed to have a really rough childhood.

The concussion thing is getting old guys.

I still don't think the "concussion thing" gets enough play, even with all the newer focus on it. It's epidemic in football.

But I do agree with the idea that this guy was damaged by the time he got to Lincoln. Even if you don't want to absolve him of his misdoings, that undeniably played a role in his antisocial behavior.

Didn't he drop a duece in his girlfriend's closet once?

LP had a terrible terrible childhood and he never shook it. Lack of parental guidance screwed him up so bad. Never was taught right from wrong, never knew how to understand and comprehend pressure and being well liked and popular.

It's a sad day in Nebraska today because he was making progress from his letters sent to who is old teammates. Everyone in Nebraska or fans of LP doesn't condone any of his actions, but people unfamiliar need to hear some stories from his old teammates. It's truly heartbreaking everything he had to go through as a kid.

Basically he probably ended up with 2 major factors that did not help him -

(1.) a youth filled with abuse -
There is a famous quote "Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man"
- well .. brutal abuse and adversity on a nasty level had LP for far longer than that - kid was thrown out on the street at age 12 - homeless for a year. - - monumentally emotionally punishing childhood.

(2.) plenty of blows to the head -
when you are the fastest, strongest & you play with intensity - dishing out punishment to every one who gets in your way - well ... you absorb a lot of punishment too.

None of this in any way absolved him of responsibility for the hideous things that he did to other people - but it may provide some level of understanding as to why he was so dysfunctional.

Tom Osborne absolved his wrong doings and let Phillips play so his team could win the title .
That is why I laugh at the win with class and dignity bs . It's all about winning . If a guy like doctor Tom can have Phillips on his team that basically says it all .

I believe that it was Real Sports that did a piece on him 2 months or so ago. There didn't seem to be a doubt that suicide or murder by another inmate wasn't very probable. It was one of the most depressing pieces I've seen. The letters he sent out were cries for help and this was never going to end well.

So they put his bust right next to Paterno's in the College Football Hall of Fame, right ?
